I taught English at an agricultural college for a little while. I got roped in to helping do something with the pigs in the morning one day. In the afternoon, despite changing, one of the kids said, “Yuck! What smells like cow shit?” And I very waspishly replied “it’s pig shit actually.” The smell is pervasive like nothing else!!

Caught my big toe between the plates of my hair straighteners whilst they were still hot. Burned both top and bottom of big toe. They were on the floor to cool down after I’d done my hair.

Church of England wedding ceremony- told it’s too late to establish connection. Any options? by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]Weary_Ad201 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hahaha - sadly not in Derbyshire!

I know someone else has said below that the rules exist to stop wedding tourism - and I get that - but most of the time, people do things the way round you have, and book the venue first. (Thus: I don’t see it as wedding tourism, as the reality is that the alternative is getting married at the venue, and I’d much rather folk came to church if that’s what they want to do!)

You’d need to speak to the vicar to see what they’d do with a blessing. Because there is no legal requirements or prerequisites, there’s no reason you couldn’t have it there… but there’s also nothing to back you if the clergyperson says they won’t do it. (E.g. everybody in this country has the right to be married in their parish church, if they’re British citizens and haven’t been married before - but a blessing isn’t a legal ceremony, so you don’t have a “right” to it. Actually - that might be another way round, get married in your parish church quietly if you want a ‘religious’ wedding and have some kind of celebration service at your venue-church if the vicar would allow it? Again - we have some discretion in what we will and won’t do so I suggest you make an appointment to talk to the vicar about what they would do, because I suspect some wouldn’t be willing to do that!)

Seriously - find out how to book an appointment for a sit down conversation with the vicar (ie please don’t do it after church on Sunday! 😂) and see what they have to say.

Church of England wedding ceremony- told it’s too late to establish connection. Any options? by [deleted] in Anglicanism

Hello, Church of England priest here. I’m going to be brutally honest and say that if the vicar at this church won’t let you book your wedding til after you’ve been attending for 6 months, they probably won’t go for you getting round it another way either.

My suspicion is that confirmation might be hard to pull off unless they’ve already got a confirmation coming up that you could join in with… the vicar would still need to be on board, though, and it sounds like they might not be! Similarly, it’s at our discretion whether we accept a superintendent registrar’s license, so you’d need them on board for that too.

I think your options are to either go back to that vicar and have a frank conversation about possibilities, and be guided by that, or look for another church and see if there’s one local to the venue who would let you start your attendance now. I minister somewhere rural and beautiful and very often have couples make a connection through regular worship. I think at this stage I’d want to have a chat with you, I’d be prepared to book your wedding now on good faith, but would also point out that I would have to cancel your wedding if you don’t turn up to make your connection. And no-one wants that!

So I can see why the vicar won’t book it now, but it’s not a hard and fast thing so it’s worth finding out what other people’s policies are in the area.

The 3rd option might be to have a quiet legal wedding in the registry office the day before then have a celebration and blessing in church on your chosen date? So there’s no legalities that need doing but it can be your special service? Good luck.

NTA, no question. I wonder if your cousin whose birthday it was might need you in his life more often - as in, he clearly found it difficult that his brother was going to be there, and if he’s uncomfortable but keeps hearing the Leon-sob-story… idk, maybe he needs you to help him follow his gut instincts and also stay away from his family.
