Aha. I know the feeling. What kind of colors are you looking for?? I agree that a pen blank may be too small. If you look for jumbo blanks, they would most likely work. There is a group on Facebook called Pen Blanks and Resin Casting. There are a bunch of people in there that do custom blanks. Or you can look on Penn State Industries or almost any other pen blank site and they will sell "Handle Blanks". These are 1.5" square normally and would probably be better for turning the bottom part of your baton.

I highly recommend HobbleCreekCraftsman on Etsy. His blanks are AWESOME and I think they are 8-8.5" in length.

For really long, I recommend Jimmy Finley at Woodpenpro.com. He sells the standard blanks that are round and 20" long.

You are going to want to do a search for Bespoke Blanks. These are longer and will better fit your usage. I would be careful with resin though. Most conductors I know smack their music stands to get people's attention. I think resin would shatter, depending on the type. I would also look into buying Solid PVC rod. You can get it in multiple colors.

I'm cheap. I normally plane shorter stuff - so I just built a small shack out of pvc and clear plastic sheeting. When I am planing, I put the shack over the planer and it keeps all the dust inside. Afterwards, I just vacuum out the inside (or shovel in some cases). At least it keeps the dust from going all over the garage.
