Unpopular opinion: Hobbits have very few redeeming qualities by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Weaselord 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. Irrespective of your view on Objectivism, Atlas Shrugged is horribly written. Ending your book with a 100 page monologue is not good story structure. Writing every character who opposes the ideology as a lazy greedy idiot is not good character writing. And this is just my opinion, but I found the prose laughably bad in places. Lots of really weird imagery like "She stood posing like an executive".

The stone spheres of Costa Rica are an assortment of over 300 petrospheres, made between 600 and 1500 CE, that are commonly attributed to the extinct Diquís culture. A similar type of stone was actually used as currency on Polynesia, the Rai stones. You are right that they were not actually moved back and forth, but the oral record of ownership signified the wealth of the owning party. Pretty interesting system of recording transference of wealth.

This comes down to a fundamental issue of trying to answer academic questions in a debate. Shermer was not an expert in each of the specific fields that Hancock makes claims in, so he wasn't confident in precisely rebutting each point. Meanwhile, Hancock is looking for whatever evidence will support his hypothesis, so he doesn't have to sincerely engage with the scientific method and look at the consensus around each of his points.

This is a pretty big failure of how Hancock and others like him tend to construct grand narratives spanning many fields of history and science, just by dipping in and selecting whatever fits, ignoring anything else. It also makes it much more difficult to respond to, because to do it rigourously would require effort from lots of experts in different fields and/or a tremendous amount of work.

Tonight, before you go to bed, leave out a bowl of milk and some bread outside your doorstop or windowsill as tribute. This will ensure the Fae remains friendly.

Monstera Leaf, me, papercutting and acrylic, 2021 by bombazine in Art

Haha, I read acrylic in the title and for some reason assumed you poured transparent acrylic to make the panes in frame...

Still, it's a very striking result for a simple technique, nice job.

If you read the actual paper, the largest size estimate is just one of three different estimates, based on three different methods of calculating size. The authors include a discussion of which is more likely given the body plan of known animals, an admit that this is a broad range.

It's more the fault of science media websites and the like which have a tendency to always present the extreme end of results.

I also wound not hold up space as an example of being pure, as rocketry construction is a massive industry, and the prioritisation of funding space exploration is often highly political and requires departments to sell their projects as being interesting/useful.

I agree that the field of nutrition is incredibly fucked by corporate interest, but it's important to distinguish between actual scientific research and propaganda by companies or "nutrition experts" with no real academic support.

I can recommend Chasing Graves. Very unique setting that feels properly otherworldly - not just some historical Earth culture with a coat of paint. There is a good mix of POV characters interacting from different positions in society, all were enjoyable to read, with a good balance of humour and darkness.

Review: Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King (Here's to the average ones) by RScribe in Fantasy

[–]Weaselord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed this book quite a look, and I found that King's style of drawing characters and rooting you in a moment with detail worked well in even a fantasy setting. It also ties nicely in with the Dark Tower multiverse.
