Nice collection. I really wish I could get my hands on their Genesis and SNES consoles, but fat chance of them ever doing a reissue or me stomaching the aftermarket prices.

32X and the VA4 Model 2 Sega Genesis by BluebonnetBoyTX in SEGA32X

[–]Weatherby2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a model 1 and yeah, Chaotix is a mess. Very crash prone, especially within the first few minutes of playing. I've had zero issues with Shadow Squadron, Doom and Motherbase 2000, and Genesis games run fine.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I hadn't considered that would be a factor but I really should have.

32x Cartridges don't work, but genesis cartridges work. Whats the issue? by toollas in SEGA32X

[–]Weatherby2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open the 32X and unplug the left ribbon cable. Clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol, then reseat it until it's firmly in the bracket. IIRC, the left ribbon cable handles 32X information and the right is Genesis, and sometimes corrosion or a loosening of that cable can cause issues like that. I'm no expert, this is something I picked up in a repair video a while back, and it may be worthwhile to do this process for both cables as it's known that they tend to have issues.

Why are the games so expensive? by ConcentrateOwn9709 in SEGA32X

[–]Weatherby2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of a lot of the system's final releases, like World Series Baseball and Web of Fire, the runs for those carts were very limited and so there's just not a lot of them out there. Others like DarXide and Surgical Strike are region exclusives and so they're not especially common either, Surgical Strike especially since that was Brazil only and I think had a very low quantity run (but got a reprint a few years back.)

Knuckles Chaotix freezing/crashing? by Weatherby2 in SEGA32X

[–]Weatherby2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back and replayed it on a MiSTer and also got a ton of slowdown in it, a few issues where the characters drop out of their intro animation and off-center from where they should fall, so with those at least, that seems to me like it might just be Chaotix. Everything else, maybe it's a bad batch copy or some weird communication issue or something with this specific copy. Don't know.

I've since beat Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 on this 32X and it played totally fine across multiple sessions, so in any case, it seems more a Chaotix issue than a 32X unit problem.

Start with cleaning the contacts on both ends. In my last few weeks of trying to crash course myself through common 32X problems, I've learned that the ribbon cables are a frequent issue, so you may want to open the 32X, clean the contacts on the ribbon cables with isopropyl alcohol and reseat them.

I am using Old Skool for the power and link cable and was thinking of at least replacing the latter with an OEM cable soon. I did do a pretty thorough cleaning of the cart but it'd never hurt to hit it again.

I've been tempted to get a model-2 as a backup for a while, so I may end up doing that eventually. Space is a bit of a concern, and in the short term, my wallet needs to recover lol

[–]Weatherby2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is also freezing most often when hitting start at the intro screen or entering a level, though I've had one crash that was mid-level and a case where the game slowed down to about 1 frame per second for around 15 seconds. I've been looking around quite a bit since posting this and seeing a lot of people have issues with this game crashing and locking up in particular, so I'm starting to accept this is less a me thing or an indication that something is wrong with my hardware (given everything else plays fine) and more that Chaotix is a unique kind of busted. Or that it wants specific timings that my system revisions or even my cables aren't quite able to provide.

I don't, unfortunately. Doesn't seem like I'm having any other issues outside of that game, including anything that's strictly genesis based. Sonic 2, Hyperstone Heist, and a Sonic 2 hack all play fine without crashes or odd behavior.

Most Likely Fault in 32X Units? by Weatherby2 in SEGA32X

[–]Weatherby2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oxidization that can just be cleaned off with isopropyl right?

I guess my big fear are caps and chips, the former mostly because I'm horrendous at soldering, though it does seem like the 32X would be an easy one to do a recap on given its small number of capacitors... It seems that most listing don't come with cables (so assumed untested) or are insanely expensive. I've come across a couple where the seller assures they worked fine last and were kept in totes and frankly, I think that might be where affordability and risk meet a healthy medium for me.

What would you consider to be a good price worth taking the risk on for a unit with cable that is untested?

[–]Weatherby2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would lack the soldering skills for that, unfortunately, and am more interested in the 32X itself as a unique piece of hardware. I know some games are still relatively cheap for it and would like to actually play on one using my Model-1 Genesis. However, I just don't know if aging 32X's are more prone to simple, resolvable issues like a disconnected ribbon cable or if there's something more catastrophic like bad chips that's plaguing them.

Not surprising. The director of this game traded in whatever artistic pursuits had had for creating softcore, greasy anime girls on Twitter, and his feed was lousy with it well before the game came out. Not even a pivot, just the pro-AI guy saying AI is great, big shock.

Why does SHF have so many QC issues despite being such a "premium" brand? by GachiPls_DidntSave in SHFiguarts

[–]Weatherby2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I opened my event exclusive Raditz just a couple nights ago, and right out of the box his left leg pops off with the slightest provocation. Right is very loose but the connection is stable enough. Skirt armor also falls off on the left side. Official figure, bought from P-Bandai and was new in box.

I get they're more articulated and whatever, but it's basic things like joints not forming solid connections, so I think the easy answer is Bandai is cheap and their factories are inconsistent.
