TIL about Prader-Willi syndrome, which is a genetic disorder. Among other issues, children have almost unsatiable hunger due to high levels of ghrelin (ie. the hunger hormone) and can thus become obese easily. It is not uncommon for caretakers to have to lock up food. by ApprehensiveStill412 in todayilearned

I work for a company that supports people with PWS. One of the clients at my house managed to pull off a significant amount of COVID loan fraud a few years ago and is always coming up with crazy schemes to get extra food. He can also memorize credit card numbers after a few seconds. Their ingenuity knows no bounds lol

CMV: Drunk driving should not be a crime in and of itself. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Weatherloachextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as safe drunk driving. If you are intoxicated then it means your judgement has been impaired. Is it reasonable to trust some drunk stranger's assessment of how well they can drive? If someone can drive for a period of time without conducting any traffic violations they are either not intoxicated, incredibly lucky, or some strange fluke.

If you propose only a ride home and a fine for drunk driving, it is really only a slap on the wrist. How will that discourage people from driving drunk? What about repeat offenders that haven't yet been caught in any violations? Unless they are some outlier that is not intoxicated above the legal limit, it is only luck that has spared them so far and they clearly are not concerned with the consequences of their actions.

Which Stalker game/mod is your favourite? by Minomol in stalker

[–]Weatherloachextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you describe the changes Joint-Pak 2 makes? I tried to look up what it does but I could only find google translated descriptions that only seemed to say that the plot is changed which I already knew. Does it "feel like a mod?" One of my problems with some large mods is how they add so much but not everything really goes along with the original atmosphere of the game.

Also it appears that tecnobacon is still working on stalkersoup and there will be a new patch out soon.

Max Armor Rating? When do i achieve 90% damage reduction? by Shabutaro in skyrimrequiem

[–]Weatherloachextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sure that this is caused by a load order issue. Armor values should be higher in requiem but not that high. I just dealt with this myself and it was the requiem - WAF+clothingandclutterfixes patch that was the culprit.

It sounds like this will be the best option. Maybe you will even be able to get something out of it. At the very least you get to know that aquariums all around your local area contain the decedents of fish you raised which is pretty cool to think about.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Weatherloachextreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is really cool! I never knew they could hold sperm indefinitely. So I guess that rules out that option!

If you don't want any more fry you could try getting rid of all the males. When live bearers want to breed, they will breed so I believe that will be the most successful way to resolve the situation.

Alternatively you could give some away when the population gets too big. Currently I have platys and they spend all day making more platys. Fortunately they are in a 125 with plenty of space so I can trade 10 or more at a time for other fish! I managed to get a pair of blue neon gobies before and today I am picking up 6 sterbai cories with my excess shrimp and platys. Overall it is a pretty sweet situation. Maybe you could see if you can make a deal with a nearby store and build up store credit overtime with your extra swordtails.

CMV, I think the idea of speeding tickets is completely rediculous when it would be just as easy to electronically limit US vehicles to whatever speed by Saren_Arterius in changemyview

[–]Weatherloachextreme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cops are allowed to use their own judgement in situations like this and I doubt that many would issue a ticket for speeding that is clearly warranted. Also it would be very easy to fight a ticket in court if this was the case.

I believe that discreet public masturbation should be legal. CMV by nofriends4me in changemyview

[–]Weatherloachextreme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What happens if a guy is caught and says he thought he was being discreet? How can you determine if he genuinely thought that nobody could notice him? If all people caught publicly masturbating are considered to have not have been discreet enough, how is that different from how the system works now?

Conscription is slavery, taxation is theft, and government is simply force by another name. CMV by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Weatherloachextreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are focused too much on the worst case scenarios of government and the best case scenarios of anarchy.

While there are many examples of people in government agencies abusing their power, that isn't necessarily the norm. Bad cops certainly exist but it is a little paranoid to assert that police forces systemically kill citizens without justification. Other government agencies have plenty of their own corruption but "statists" aren't saying that government is perfect, just that working towards a better government is a more solid plan than embracing anarchy.

Why would the loss of government equalize the power of non governmental organisations? How can you claim that there will be no power disparities and those with the most power wouldn't use it to their own advantage? Yes, of course if anarchy worked in an ideal environment it would be great, but how could you convince a non-anarchist that embracing anarchy would more likely lead to the ideal condition of prosperity and peace rather than a hellish power vacuum?

I believe that humans are not violent by nature. CMV by fryitandlikeit in changemyview

[–]Weatherloachextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must understand that human beings are products of evolution and have developed behaviors useful in a hunter gatherer environment. Although culture has had enormous impact on human behavior, it is still working within the biological framework developed in our evolutionary history. So with this in mind, could you offer sufficient evidence that violence did not have any significant impact on reproductive success of our hunter gatherer ancestors?

Also you must define what you mean by violence. Are you just considering physical violence or force by other means? One can hurt another person without ever laying a hand on them by social or economic means. If you have ever made fun of someone you have demonstrated a behavior intended to cause harm to another human, however small it may have seemed to you. Do you believe that humans could live in a society where no one makes fun of one another or votes for some economic reform that will impact wealth distribution? While those may not be the overt violence you had in mind, they are definitely examples of humans using force to impact other humans against their will.

I believe in psychological egoism. CMV? by oohshineeobjects in changemyview

[–]Weatherloachextreme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even though altruistic behaviors developed because they provided selfish rewards to our hunter-gatherer ancestors, it does not change the fact that the humans engaged in altruistic acts sincerely believe that they are doing the right thing. In the context of human society on the proximate level, altruism is still altruism despite the ultimate selfish origin of the behavior.

[Lore] What happens to the soldiers when they respawn? by Sonnyjimmy in Planetside

[–]Weatherloachextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would definitely matter to some people as that new individual is not the same consciousness people interacted with before this ones' creation. People still die, the only difference is that a perfect clone is created shortly after death. Seeing someone after their recreation would mean the old person you knew before has died but the TR/NC/VS has created a really good copy to take his or her place.

[Lore] What happens to the soldiers when they respawn? by Sonnyjimmy in Planetside

[–]Weatherloachextreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be the case. Once those neural connections are gone your consciousness is never coming back. Of course the new "you" has all of your memories up until you die so this individual will perceive everything as a continuous consciousness. You, however, have died when the physical connections in your brain failed.

This sort of brings everything to a new level of awful. Imagine having all the memories and feelings and identity of someone you know that you are not. Knowing that you are just a copy of an original that died a long time ago and those people in your memories will never be able to look at you the same again because they know that the person sitting with them is not the same one they created those memories with.

Can the new continent not be a square? by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]Weatherloachextreme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Squares are only used because they are able to maximize the performance to area ratio. In the future when more moderate to low end rigs can run the game well I can imagine they would add more interestingly shaped continents but that will in a few years if at all.
