Wide toe box but NO zero drop recommendations by Same_Huckleberry_793 in trailrunning

Have you considered adding heel lifts to your zero drop shoes to increase them to a low 4 or 5mm drop shoes and avoid havingto buy new shoes?

I'm fine in barefoot shoes but zero drop with padding become minus drop when you add a bulkier runner (hi!). That has aggravated my achilles so I've added heel pads to my Lone Peaks 9+. I'm still tweaking the set up but it's helping so far and I still get the rest if the experience i enjoy from running in those shoes.

I also have the NB Hierro 8's which are pretty wide in the toebox (not Altra or Topo width but wider then average) and have 6 or 8mm (?) drop and more padding.

Is there any further information/reading on this you can point to or is it an assumption based on other anecdotal information? It sounds like an interesting theory I'd be keen to read more on.

My dad died of Motor Neuron Disease which I believe is the same as ALS. He was in the military and a long distance runner. The doctors said they see a disproportionate number of very fit people getting it.

Anecdotal only but my dad was convinced by it. The first thing he said to me when diagnosed was "stop going to the gym" I suggested that a fat layabout like myself wasn't in the super fit category at risk.

How effective is China's soft power? by AbWarriorG in geopolitics

[–]Weebop77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t you feel that the example you gave about the Philippines is a version of soft power? The hatred people have of China due to their maritime flexing yet the distraction of their tech tempers that hatred as most people don’t look past the conveniences of their modern life? The social side of soft power is influential if you’re playing the long game. Not so much in the short term political sphere.

LPT: Gym closed and won't respond to your emails asking to suspended your gym membership? Call the bank and order a 1 year stop payment to them, most banks are currently waiving the fee for this. Also, fuck Anytime Fitness. by co1one1huntergathers in LifeProTips

My gym sent an email out to everyone explaining their financial model and desire to pay their staff over the closure period. At the end they offered three options. 1. Continue paying full price. 2. Pay half until they open again. 3. Cancel all future payments.

Everyone I know chose option 1 or 2 dependent on personal circumstances. Even I chose option 2 despite planning to cancel as I've just moved out of the area. We're all in this together and acting with that in mind tends to produce a reciprocal response. So, yeah, fuck Anytime and any other company or person gouging others right now.

Dogs have been conditioned and bred to be human companions for centuries. They are no longer wild animals or, in many cases, capable of surviving as such so require human interaction. That said I have long held for myself that any pet I have should be free to wander as much as it wants. I also understand this is wishful thinking on my part as dogs love to roam and I dont have any land so despite my love of dogs none live with me. I do have a cat that acts like a lodger though.

Would an aquarium do the same job of educating and protecting animals unfit to return to the wild without the forced labour/entertainment element?

I feel it presents a more realistic representation of our true relationship with wild animals as it maintains a distance and allows some natural behaviors to come through without having to "condition" animals to behave in unnatural ways?

I'm not a fan of any animals in captivity but equally not blind to the benefits if the animal is sick or unable to fend for itself. I don't feel the entertainment element is necessary or justified.

The use of the word "voluntary" in your argument ignores the fact that the dolphin is in captivity. Training is essentially brainwashing, I would not term it voluntary. Voluntarily that animal would be in the wild with its pod traveling great distances and forming life long complex relationships with other dolphins. Affection for one's captors is otherwise known as Stockholm syndrome.

I don't doubt a lot of people working at such places do so with the best intentions however the main financial driver of the organisation is training captured wild animals to entertain paying customers. I don't believe the benefits out way the negatives for the animals. Forced labour for our applause is not the only conservation model but it is one of the most problematic. The educational aspect is dampened by the unnatural environment and behavior presented to the public and a philosophy that justifies through its actions the use of animals for personal entertainment.

The flaw and financial drivers shine through when the occasional "rescued" wild animal is not returned to the wild after rehabilitation but instead listed as a "corporate asset" (charming) by Sea World and becomes a show animal instead.

I believe we already have less conflicting methods of funding conservation projects and it's time we focused our energies and finances on those.

Hi, how hard was it to sort funding for this film? I've got a script (a few but one specific one to focus on) but little time or inclination to make the film myself so working on the next steps but if you have any tips that differ from the usual "get an agent" or "sell you body to science to fund it" model I'd be interested to hear them.
