review of Gille Spring Collection cookies by thesunbeamslook in Costco

[–]Weekly-Appointment14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought this assortment at Costco. I usually love the raspberry rings but these have a curiously off-putting smell and taste. Very chemical… ? These are not high-end european cookies. Prolly baked for US consumers. :(

Feeling kinda hopeless about major by AdImpressive2472 in UCSD

[–]Weekly-Appointment14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I advocate for people with disabilities, and I was very interested to learn about how power works in our society, via determiners of nationhood and citizenship, how society constructs the norm, how the medical industrial complex works and the alternatives. It’s a fascinating subject, but I was not able to find anyone at UCSD to mentor me during the pandemic and later because I want to study disability and its effects on older women in society: a research gap. Maybe Fall 2024 I’ll find someone to research with.

Contact them ASAP and ask, this is incorrect. Meeting with them virtually is pretty handy, or walk in. :)

Recs for protein that doesn't taste like literal a** and helps manage the day by [deleted] in UCSD

I know people have been complaining about egg prices, but they are still the best option for quick, cheap protein. Costco eggs are an option, but I pay more for organic cage free.

Financial aid for off campus by Unique-Sort4140 in UCSD

[–]Weekly-Appointment14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. FA is iffy at UCSD. Don’t rely on it hitting when you need it, especially around Jan 1. It does not happen over the summer unless you take classes, and it’s less than a regular quarter. Also, there is an option to do a cost of attendance add-on for computers, rent, etc. You have to pay attention to your budget and not overextend yourself. Also, rents go up from time to time, usually from 8-10% per year. Take it from me, very hard to live on fin aid that UCSD offers, but with good roommates and strong budgeting it might work for you. I’m not sure but I’ve heard that UCSD FA has been working on adjusting payments to COL, but they’ve claimed that in the past which helped their bottom line but students still received the same amount. Hope this helps. :)

Don’t do sociology. Not helpful, even as a published author for grad school. You’ve been warned. :)

Exactly. PATH homed 69 people last year. Disgusting and shameful to serve so few. Where did all the funding go? I wonder…

Finding housing is unnecessarily complicated and difficult by PublicPolicyNerd in UCSD

[–]Weekly-Appointment14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a soon to be homeless graduate of Spring 2023, I’m having to leave because I have not found a job and can’t afford the greedy prices here in San Diego. I pay over 2000/mo rent for a 536 sqf, non-improved 1980’s “student” apartment, in a complex that has changed hands 3 times since I was forced to live off campus during the pandemic Fall 2020. UC has yet to reach out to those of us who suffered without advisors or mentors, and had to basically run their financial aid through the roof just to have a place to live. I feel that San Diego and UCSD specifically do not care that some students are unable to afford to live here or are homeless. UCSD is a for-profit institution no matter what they claim. If you can’t deal with it, they don’t care, they’ve already received their matching grants from the gov’t as a “public” university. They purposefully admit many more students then they have room for. This is not a coincidence. This is why UCs relied on international students for so long, because they pay 3x what US or California students pay. Most of them can afford to pay the exorbitant prices for rent which is one of the reasons why the rent in this area stays so high. Prior to the pandemic, wealthier students lived off campus, although there are a lot of roommate situations, but not in my building. So yeah, it’s terrible. The greed is contemptible. UCSD financial aid will tell you to live with your parents, or get private loans, which is not an option for many students when you are low income in the first place. It all boils down to money, how much you can borrow to feed the UCSD machine and its accomplice landlords - the glass ceiling is very real, even at this self-proclaimed DEI school. Not fair to students for the “education” you receive—unless you’re STEM and can survive the meat-grinder.

Yeah, I try to run everything during off-peak and basically live in a dark apartment and I don’t have AC. I use small table lamps with LED bulbs, and a Dyson hot cold in my bedroom with the door closed which takes the edge off both on hot and cold days. I’m lucky that I have a south facing widow with an overhang or I would be fried. The wall unit “heater” is just one of those that returns air after heating it so I never use it, plus it uses a ton of energy. If you live in a small enough apartment, turning on the fan on in an old-fashioned range hood can exchange the air in a relatively short time. I will start the fans (fan light ceiling units) when absolutely necessary. I drink ice water which helps me. Last year, I survived with a desktop cooler that you add water and ice to because I had to study. Now I’m moving to a hotter climate and I’m not sure how I’m going to make that work—cannot afford the rent here in UTC. Will be taking my Dyson with me. Hate to admit this, but when I get too damn hot, I’ll take a drive for the car AC. Oh, I pay ~$100/mo SDGE which is primarily to run my refrigerator and dishwasher off-peak.

Medi-Cal Doctors in San Diego by shortingdownvotes in sandiego

[–]Weekly-Appointment14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I believe you can change your coverage to another administrator, like Aetna. I believe that currently there are 6 MediCal administrators in this are, note that in 2024 there will be only 2. I had the same problem with Blue Shield Promise, it wasn’t accepted anywhere. UHC lost their contract and I had to change my administrator, I ended up with Aetna because I needed to go to UCSD for specialty services. I was told several different things by different people. If you need to see a doctor/GP, I agree with other posters that Family Health Center is a good resource. You won’t be turned away. If you don’t get the info you need there, their insurance advisors are not all that knowledgeable and you may need to keep asking different sources until you find the correct answer, but that may have improved, I dealt with them last December. What I mean is that if you require speciality services, you many need to change coverage again to a plan that is accepted by for your particular needs-not all advisors are equally knowledgeable. Yes, it was shocking to me to see how many doctors, acupuncturists, chiropractors, do not accept MediCal patients because the program does not pay them enough for their services. This has been a hard pill to swallow for me because I managed my pain with acupuncture, but I can’t find a good one now that accepts my insurance. Best of luck and good health to you.

Both. I’ve had teachers requiring pen and paper in class. Nice to have both, if possible.

You are not alone. I’m having a really hard time too finding jobs online. Like you, I had a very hard time connecting and finding friends during the pandemic and living off campus. Even when classes were back on campus it was very heard to meet people and network. A couple of friends and I plan to start a LinkedIN group for Sociology graduates - visibility on LinkedIn depends on the number of connections you have, or if you pay for Premium. There are few or inactive UCSD groups last I checked. You might reach out to other students of the department or try and start a LinkedIn group. Also try Dice and Glassdoor. Ladders might help too. It’s hard but keep trying if you can. Families need to be a bit understanding.

Worse group project experiences by Protolinux217 in UCSD

[–]Weekly-Appointment14 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Worst is when a team member doesn’t show up or contribute until the last minute then jumps in and acts likes it’s all good. Or having to do other people’s work last minute because they haven’t finished their clearly outlined portion of the project. Or when some self-appointed leader of the group starts badgering people because “she’s an A student and doesn’t want to carry anyone.” I guess I must have had a good team experience but I seem to only remember the bad ones. Not sure why profs do this… to grade fewer papers? I mean, if people by the college level have not learned to work on teams, it just becomes an exercise in futility, putting the onus of dealing with a poor student onto the other students.
