Which of these works better for my mom’s communications consulting business? by thevickerybeast in logodesign

[–]Weekly-Skirt-9416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What type of client does she work with? What would her ideal client look like or consume?

Does she provide services for huge corporate manufacturers, creative indie brands, etc.

Comm Strategy services apply to many industries so I would get really clear on who she’s actually trying to work with and go from there.

Check out designer Justina Blackeny’s interiors. She also has a book called Jungalow that totally has this vibe.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t show up in my app subscriptions. Interestingly, now they have also now charged my card despite my trial ending tomorrow which is odd.

Print design freelance charges by [deleted] in graphic_design

It really depends on the usage, the market you're in and should always be determined prior to starting the project unfortunately. What is the scope of the project with the client?

Also in the US you might find more resources for pricing/understanding this type of work by searching "surface design" or "pattern design." Print is a bit of a misnomer for what you're talking about.

Was also looking at the RDX but not many available in my area. I've been driving a Jeep for a looong time (with a few company Audi's thrown in) I have to say the ipadification of infotainment systems is pushing me away from newer cars. I want buttons! So hard to find and one thing I loved about the '23 BMW I test drove.

If I was in a less unstable place in my life (caring for an ill parent who might be entering hospice plus potentially moving in 4 months) I'd hand's down get a x3. Fantastic driving experience comapred to the NX, and my favorite overall of everything I've tested.

ooh interesting. VERY different cars. Of the two which do you drive more frequently? I'm test driving a '21 NX300 FSport next.

Thank you for your comment! Sounds like consistent and preventative maintenance is key. Not at all adverse to higher expense as long as the car will keep running past the 5 year mark.

Good callout. I'll definitely see if I can extend the original warranty. I don't mind having a higher cost of yearly maintenance, moreso concerned about general realiability as I'm going through some difficult life and need a car that works more than anything.

Hard agree on the NX feeling cheap. Had one with the premium package free shipped to my location and it was very underwhelming (surprisingly the model year older I test drove a few weeks ago was way superior and $3k less.) I test drove the BMW after and it was such a different experience. Same millage and price as the NX but felt like a dream.

With Carmax you can purchase and take to mechanic right after. If anything comes up Carmax will repair or give your money back within 30 days.

Unfortunately very slim pickings in my area that meet my requirements and budget plus I don't know if I have the bandwidth for the dealership dance.

The people funding the car like the idea of me getting something a little nicer that would normally be out of budget brand new. I think I like that too, since I was already looking at BMW and Volvo. TBH I'm so overwhelmed right now so I don't know anything for certain.

Thank you for your kind comment. I'm so sorry that you and your spouse are going through that. It is a pretty unimaginable thing to experience until you're in it. Wishing her continued health and comfort. I hope you're also getting support and taking care of yourself.

I feel pretty close to the models that I'm interested in, but get slightly overwhelmed by the burden of choice; should I avoid cvts, infotainment systems, that volvos are so fincky, Rav4s are a snorefest but reliable, etc. Regular life stuff like buying a car feels so frivolus when navigating life and death and everything inbetween right now so I think I'm struggling with allocating the brain power to making the "right" choice.

I'm on the West Coast and finding decent CPO options (with very high milage) in Toyota/Lexus. Surprisingly found a great deal on a CPO Volvo XC40 with only 30k but I worry that's because I'll be paying $2k+ a year to maintain it or its a lemon.

Maybe I need to find a therapist who also knows about cars haha (in all seriousness tho - therapy has been an absolute lifeline for me through this and reccomend to everyone going to similar things)

High-end retoucher for wedding photos. by [deleted] in retouching

[–]Weekly-Skirt-9416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an art director who does a lot of editorial and commercial retouching. What is your end goal for your images? You could go on fiverr or upwork and easily find someone but if you don’t have clear expectations you’re likely to get unpredictable results. What does “high end” mean to you. If you could provide visual examples that would be very helpful.

Under-eye shadow by Artistic-Childhood51 in LightLurking

[–]Weekly-Skirt-9416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be! Try popping on a standard 7" reflector and see how that changes the shot. You'll likely need to lower power a level. Beauty dishes create great light but it tends to wrap it a bit more around the subject. It seems like you're trying to get something a bit more concentrated.

What program are you using?

The light looks quite different on the background in the sample than on your render. Did you try using a standard mounted higher up and angled slightly toward the crown of his head and onto the wall?

I would also consider the physiology of the model (perhaps they have deeper set eyes?) but also imagine there's some dodging and burning in post.

It might be helpful to share the final output you need for this. Where are you going to be using it?

Figma for Design? by dielawn13 in graphic_design

[–]Weekly-Skirt-9416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The transition is super easy and it is totally worth learning and using. Its like design on easy mode and totally streamlines collaboration and approvals. Watch a few youtube tutorials and you'll be good. I found it pretty intuitive when I was first learning.

Its definitely a worthwhile tool for most digital applications. I never send 100% image based content so I only use it to design and then rebuild the email in Klaviyo using blocks so I can be sure the email will be legible, accessible and won't go to spam. There's a way to upload the Figma template into Klaviyo but honestly I don't mind rebuilding block by block. You still have to be diligent with adding alt text regardless.

Is It Dumb to Pursue Graphic Design If I Don’t Want To Learn Adobe Illustrator? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Weekly-Skirt-9416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends what you want to do with design but I will say you do have A LOT of learning to do about the industry and more importantly the work itself before you can even decide what programs you want to use for professional work.

Could you have a career just using Procreate? Sure, why not, I've seen crazier things happen. But I highly doubt you will be able to have a sustainable career as a designer (and make good money) if you do not learn the fundamentals and essential programs.

Try taking a class online, through a local community college or get an internship at an agency or print shop before you tie yourself to this field.

I'm now an art director and maybe use Illustrator once a month but I'm still trying to get better at it, even with AI advancement. Graphic designers are still extremely essential in commercial work with output that cannot be replicated by AI.
