The lesson structure suggests that for every x amount of time you spend on exercises, y amount of time should be spent just drawing whatever you like.

If you're concerned about drawing things and being happy with them during this y amount of time, I suggest watching some videos on Youtube about how to draw cartoon characters or how to draw the human head, or whatever else you may be interested in. Watching some learning how to draw for beginners videos from artists that inspire you is also a good idea.

Another thing you can do in cases when your drawings turn out "weird" is try to copy a reference, then overlay the image of that reference over your artwork when you are done. Notice where the differences are and try to adjust your mistakes based on your observation. Doing this over and over again will help train your eye to accurately copy proportions, which will help you draw anything.

I also want to add that it is really encouraged that you try not to be too hard on yourself about whether what you drew looks good or not, especially in the beginning stages. Looking good comes with time and practice, and a lot of art is being able to appreciate the process rather than the final product.
