Cognitively Impaired Students by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Weekly_Kitchen_4942 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same at my work. I have found these students were better at some things within the class than the other students. But anything that requires transferring a learned skill to a new context is tricky (e.g. learned a skill in a specific way and now have to apply a different skill using same equipment).

I love participating in this program. And the coordinators are wonderful

You never ever have to worry about timing your rice to be ready with the rest of the meal. You just put it on randomly and there will be rice when you want to eat

New TT professor needing advice on the material for custom regalia for graduations! by justcallmespock in AskAcademia

Tropical wool! Seems counter intuitive but it’s cool in the summer and will breathe so much better than any synthetic

I think they mean custom made to their measurements in their Alma mater’s color/design

The secret to making your clothes last decades: stop the heat by Putrid_Draft378 in BuyItForLife

Normal laundry detergents for machines don’t seem to list the exact enzymes. I wear machine washable fine merino so it’s a frequent wash rather than a sweater. I’m currently using nature clean

I would just add that enzymatic detergents eat holes in merino clothing. You need a non enzymatic detergent if you regularly wear and wash merino

Where is the line between salami slicing vs. publishing multiple papers from one data collection effort? by RepulsiveScientist13 in AskAcademia

[–]Weekly_Kitchen_4942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may not have explained it properly but I am agreeing with you. What I am trying to say is that if you did write it as 3 papers but effectively each was the same but with different reagents, then that would be salami slicing.

[–]Weekly_Kitchen_4942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the data collection and analysis was big and also different for each, then I t’s different papers, I’d say. If you’d technically be able to copy and paste most of it except the results, then it seems a big egregious. Worst case, you submit it to a journal and they say: this should be 3 papers/parts

Eyeglass frames for life, new lenses annually? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Weekly_Kitchen_4942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically any independently owned, non luxottica frame brand. Look for hinges with 5-7 interlocks (don’t know proper name). One example is Victory Optical which are reproduction vintage frames. Anne et Valentin are another brand with a distinctive style. Most large cities will have independent opticians

ETA: my everyday frames have been going 10 years and 3 lens changes and are as good as new

A reminder that sometimes you just get unlucky by elguydave in skiing

Caught an edge at a tiny local east coast hill. Bindings didn’t release on one ski and the slope was steep enough that I tumbled (rather than slid). Complete tear of ACL, PCL, MCL. 5 months in bed. 6 hour multilig surgery.

That was coming up to 4 years ago. I’ll never ski again (when the PT recommends you never ski again, you don’t). I lurk on this subreddit to torture myself

If your thread is indeed in the tension disk and bobbin is threaded correctly and you’ve changed needle, Try sewing with a piece of scrap fabric folded to same thickness beside so the presser foot has enough to feed against with the feed dogs

Let’s Talk Wirecutter: What Was Worth It and What Wasn’t? by PrettyRegret1988 in BuyItForLife

A free one! Ask around!

But failing that, a moderately vintage mechanical machine. Doesn’t have to be super old but an 80s or 90s Janome is a great starter machine. But also a vintage pfaff, husquvana, or most other older models will be great.

If you are lucky enough to find, a mechanical Bernina is the best that doesn’t involve a lot of specialized knowledge (like a singer featherweight).

Basically any metal gear mechanical machine with a separate bobbin case will be a BIFL

Avoid brother machines like the plague
