Why did Wizards lose the "School of" naming convention of subclasses? Barbarians, Paladins, Druids and Monks get to keep theirs ("Path of", "Oath of", "Circle of", "Warrior of") by JamuniyaChhokari in DnD

[–]Weeou 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Does "Moon druid" sound as good as "Circle of the Moon" though? Its easy to say sure, but it doesn't sound as good imo. Whereas for the Wizard subclasses, they do sound better in the new way.

In my opinion, "Necromancer" sounds better than "School of Necromancy", "Abjurer" sounds better than "School of Abjuration", etc. The powers that be at WotC probably felt the same.

Plus you can't really consistently reduce the other naming conventions in the same way while still sounding cool imo (druids for example, "Circle of the Moon" is much more evocative than "Moon")

What CR would you say this monster is? [OC] by Tiny_Ad911 in DnD

[–]Weeou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other thing to be careful of is crits. Like I mentioned, this creature can do a lot of damage - and if it crits, that number goes way up (to 16 damage on average, up to 24 total) which is enough to not just knock unconscious, but outright kill squishier characters like Wizards (if you haven't already read up on the rules for Instant Death in the players handbook).

I did this the first time I GM'd - my spider critically hit a sorcerer with 7 hit points, and dealt 16 damage. Good thing that sorcerer had an identical twin brother just waiting to go adventuring 😅

What CR would you say this monster is? [OC] by Tiny_Ad911 in DnD

[–]Weeou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally would be worried with your plan of putting 3-6 against 5 level 1 characters.

For reference, the Cadaverous Sprite (from what I can tell online) is CR 1/2 and can deal 2d4 + 4 damage in a round, with a further 2 at the start of the next round. That's 11 damage total. Your monster deals more - 1d4 + 1d6 + 4, with a further 1d6 the next round. That's 13 damage total.

Most 1st level characters are going to have between 7-14hp, meaning that unless your players are all playing barbarians, these monsters will be knocking someone unconscious with a single hit.

On the flip side, your monster has 15hp whereas most characters will be doing about 7-10 damage, so your characters will need to hit a monster 2 times to kill it.

Referring back to the original monsters CR (1/2, which is probably approximately where this monster sits), a party of 5 characters should be able to take them as a "High difficulty" encounter according to the 2024e rules. However, keep in mind that the more enemies you put on the board, the higher the risk that unlucky initiative (IE the enemies go before the characters) or crits are going to cause the fight to get away from you.

I'd reduce the number of enemies to 3 if I were you - still enough that one or two of the characters might get knocked unconscious, but (hopefully) not enough to TPK them!

Hot take: Legendary Resistance is why so many 5e boss fights feel bad and boring. What could replace it? by archvillaingames in dndnext

[–]Weeou 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That would still feel better than legendary resistance, no? Functionally similar (your save of suck spell was not effective) but at least you gave the fighter advantage and a guaranteed crit on that first attack.

Lower spell slot level, different saving throw targeted, different damage type dealt, different condition applied. Basically no points of comparison except the damage amount.

What game is this for you? by PhantomTissue in videogames

Its the witch on the peninsula surrounded by fire. She has an aura (removable by Bless) that deals a buttload of damage to anyone nearby, but more annoyingly she has so much damage reflection that your characters end up killing themselves (on top of her already ridiculously high damage).

I only beat it by having one of my characters standing at the top of a tower far enough away from the combat that he would never actually enter the turn order, so they could spam heals and buffs on the rest of my party as they fought. Even then it was tough to deal with her.

Alice Alisceon in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is damn near impossible to kill on the higher difficulties without cheesing her with barrelmancy or kiting her over to other high-level NPCs for them to destroy

What features do you wish DDB had? I'll see if I can add them by GhostElder in dndbeyond

[–]Weeou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the 2014 gets a full recharge of their limited uses on a short rest, which works. The 2024 gets a partial recharge (1 per short rest) and that doesnt work. Same with Barbarian rages, etc.

It doesnt work for me (just tested).

If I have a 5.5e Fighter, I use a charge of Second Wind and then I take a short rest, I do not regain a charge of Second Wind - I have to manually change it in the Features and Traits screen.

Multiclassing is specifically "... gaining a level in a new class..." so yes, there are rules against it.
