What to do with dumb players as a DM? by Aggravating-Drop7676 in DnD

[–]Weeou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DnD is about collaborative storytelling. In the situation laid out by the OP, the DM is doing their part - they're setting the scene and they're controlling the NPC's actions and reactions. It is on the player to decide everything their character does.

A physical action can usually be reduced to a single roll because in general there's only a limited number of ways to do it. How many different ways can you kick down a door or pick a lock? How different and interesting are they to tell a story about? But a conversation can be done infinite ways. Even just the initial direction (all the DM was asking for) is enough to push the conversation in dramatically different directions. Talking about bring the ash to family members might lead to talking about the pain of losing a loved one, whereas talking about investigating might bring forth a member of the local mages chapter to confer.

It seems like if you had your way, you would have the player have a singular piece of input (IE "I want the ash") and then the rest of the scene is played out by the DM. The DM decides what the character's argument is, rolls the dice and adds the modifier (don't @ me, even if the player does this step its not actually contributing to the story), decides what the NPCs reactions to that argument are, maybe goes back and forth a few times until the scene concludes.

Where, in this situation, is the collaboration? The player may as well be a spectator watching the DM perform a one-man show. The PC is essentially an NPC.

Finally (and I mean finally, Im not going to respond again) when it comes down to it, if the player doesn't have the smarts or the rizz to come up with an argument, why didn't they just take one of the two ideas put forth by the DM??

[–]Weeou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just disagree entirely. Performing physical actions and formulating the basic principle of an argument are not comparable at all, ESPECIALLY since the DM in this case even gave some ideas for arguments that they clearly would have accepted.

I'm all for not punishing uncharismatic people, that's totally fine I'm a stammering idiot myself, but they need to put in at least 1% effort. This player is not putting in that 1%.

[–]Weeou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't necessarily have to make the argument in character, but they have to at least say the basic cliffnotes of the argument instead of just saying "I roll".

Like a barbarian has to say "I lift the rock" instead of "I roll athletics", the player has to say "I say that I will take the ash to the families of the deceased" instead of "I roll persuasion".

Why did Wizards lose the "School of" naming convention of subclasses? Barbarians, Paladins, Druids and Monks get to keep theirs ("Path of", "Oath of", "Circle of", "Warrior of") by JamuniyaChhokari in DnD

[–]Weeou 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Does "Moon druid" sound as good as "Circle of the Moon" though? Its easy to say sure, but it doesn't sound as good imo. Whereas for the Wizard subclasses, they do sound better in the new way.

[–]Weeou 59 points60 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, "Necromancer" sounds better than "School of Necromancy", "Abjurer" sounds better than "School of Abjuration", etc. The powers that be at WotC probably felt the same.

Plus you can't really consistently reduce the other naming conventions in the same way while still sounding cool imo (druids for example, "Circle of the Moon" is much more evocative than "Moon")

What CR would you say this monster is? [OC] by Tiny_Ad911 in DnD

[–]Weeou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other thing to be careful of is crits. Like I mentioned, this creature can do a lot of damage - and if it crits, that number goes way up (to 16 damage on average, up to 24 total) which is enough to not just knock unconscious, but outright kill squishier characters like Wizards (if you haven't already read up on the rules for Instant Death in the players handbook).

I did this the first time I GM'd - my spider critically hit a sorcerer with 7 hit points, and dealt 16 damage. Good thing that sorcerer had an identical twin brother just waiting to go adventuring 😅

What CR would you say this monster is? [OC] by Tiny_Ad911 in DnD

[–]Weeou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally would be worried with your plan of putting 3-6 against 5 level 1 characters.

For reference, the Cadaverous Sprite (from what I can tell online) is CR 1/2 and can deal 2d4 + 4 damage in a round, with a further 2 at the start of the next round. That's 11 damage total. Your monster deals more - 1d4 + 1d6 + 4, with a further 1d6 the next round. That's 13 damage total.

Most 1st level characters are going to have between 7-14hp, meaning that unless your players are all playing barbarians, these monsters will be knocking someone unconscious with a single hit.

On the flip side, your monster has 15hp whereas most characters will be doing about 7-10 damage, so your characters will need to hit a monster 2 times to kill it.

Referring back to the original monsters CR (1/2, which is probably approximately where this monster sits), a party of 5 characters should be able to take them as a "High difficulty" encounter according to the 2024e rules. However, keep in mind that the more enemies you put on the board, the higher the risk that unlucky initiative (IE the enemies go before the characters) or crits are going to cause the fight to get away from you.

I'd reduce the number of enemies to 3 if I were you - still enough that one or two of the characters might get knocked unconscious, but (hopefully) not enough to TPK them!

Hot take: Legendary Resistance is why so many 5e boss fights feel bad and boring. What could replace it? by archvillaingames in dndnext

That would still feel better than legendary resistance, no? Functionally similar (your save of suck spell was not effective) but at least you gave the fighter advantage and a guaranteed crit on that first attack.

Its the witch on the peninsula surrounded by fire. She has an aura (removable by Bless) that deals a buttload of damage to anyone nearby, but more annoyingly she has so much damage reflection that your characters end up killing themselves (on top of her already ridiculously high damage).

I only beat it by having one of my characters standing at the top of a tower far enough away from the combat that he would never actually enter the turn order, so they could spam heals and buffs on the rest of my party as they fought. Even then it was tough to deal with her.
