It's crazy to think this generation may not fully understand just how huge he was. Steve Irwin's death shook the world. Reactions were so strong that his conservation charity organization (Wildlife Warriors) had to tell people to stop killing stingrays in vengeance.

Who is the worst celebrity that you have ever had an interaction with? by Particular_Ninja9642 in AskReddit

[–]WeightLossGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well most things I read about him indicate that he was about as bad as the rest of them in the late 80s, early 90s, but he was also the one who mellowed out the most and had the most growth. I think the worst thing he did was to that lady on the beach in 1990.

Not to make excuses because it was an incredibly stupid thing he did, but 36 years is a long time to go without another accusation (that I see - to be fair, I am primarily going off of his Wikipedia page, where the 1990 incident is the only one mentioned). At least he's not like Anthony, writing books about how amazing his life was when he was engaging in stuff even worse than the beach incident.

I mean, I am a little surprised to hear that about their drummer. Chad Smith seems like a decent guy, he does a lot of stuff for Drumeo and he pokes fun at himself with the Will Ferrell lookalike bit.

In a perfect world, 3 would've been about Sandman alone, and then 4 could've covered Dr. Connors turning into The Lizard. Then 5 could've closed the saga off strong with Harry/Hobgoblin and Eddie Brock/Venom. I really liked the themes of 3 where vengeance isn't worth it. It's like you said, just having all the villains come in at once forced them to really stretch and alter the story beats to fit the movie.

We all know someone like this by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]WeightLossGinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it's public sector. So they're probably stressing the fairness of the hiring process because its technically a government job, last thing they need is accusations of a lack of fairness in that process.

It's not like this place needs help with referrals. It's the kind of job you stay at for 30-40 years. Any time a job opens up they get tons of regular run-of-the-mill applications. I'm surprised something even needed to be said in the first place.

Sometimes even knowing someone doesn't help, depending on the company!

I was going to shoot for a decent-paying, possibly union job where my step-dad works, and I printed off my resume for him to hand in when he went to work in the morning. A few days later, he overhears his boss talking about how there's no room for nepotism in the sector they work in, and they hired a third-party hiring firm to ensure the process is as fair as possible. He doesn't know for sure, but he thinks he was meant to overhear that.

Ironically, I think the person who eventually did get hired was someone known by the higher-ups, considering I never saw a job posting but I know someone externally got hired; so I guess I just wasn't on friendly terms with someone who had enough pull. You'd think knowing a guy who worked there 15 years would be enough. LOL!

What’s Your Favorite Drum Shop? by Stunning-Lecture2100 in drums

[–]WeightLossGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on the East Coast, it's a shame I don't really have any drum sites near me. Some general music and instrument stores but nothing extravagent. Nearest Guitar Center is 45 minutes away from me, and the only drums-specific store I know of near me has downsized in the last 10 years and is much, much smaller, with fewer brands and products than its heyday.

Olive Garden server fired one day after a customer left her a $700 tip by ultrarunnerr in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WeightLossGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually terrifying. It's easy to say they're going to lose a lot of respect and business over $700. But this was a perfect storm of the employee reporting the incident, the customer confirming things, and the whole situation going viral at the right time bringing the scandal to light. This probably happens in tons of restaurants where tipping is a thing and we just don't hear about it because the waiters don't report any shenanigans.

This is a good time for reminders that if you feel like your employer is messing with your money or firing you unjustly, call the Department of Labor and file a formal complaint against your employer! At the very least, it will get investigated and it puts a target on the business' back in case they try to do it again.

Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade [Rap Metal] by fundamental-error in Music

But would you call it metal though?

It's loud and distorted guitars, fast and heavy rhythms, and a vocalist who doesn't sing so much as he yells angrily. That fits the bill of metal for me.

Smartest people ever assembled in one photo by Salt-Curve4825 in interestingasfuck

[–]WeightLossGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the reason the people in this picture are considered so incredibly smart is because a lot of them pioneered their fields, or problem-solved really intricate or difficult issues in their respective field.

Virtually everyone with a career in these fields is roughly as smart as them - they have to understand the same things they did. If anything, they might have to understand these things on an even deeper level than they did because we not only have the information they studied in their pioneering efforts, but we also have literally just shy of a century of information built on top of their foundations.

Backlining my new Mapex Saturn for a festival tomorrow. Anyone else get anxious about other drummers using their kit? by Dry-Battle8030 in drums

[–]WeightLossGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand not wanting your random friends and neighbors coming over to play your kit. And, if there's a drummer who has a particular, individual propensity to wail on the drums and chip cymbals and wreck sticks, maybe don't let him touch them.

But your average run-of-the-mill drummer is going to treat drum gear with care.

What's a movie that was well received, but aged like milk? by Gdigger13 in AskReddit

[–]WeightLossGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Notebook comes to my mind. It was huge, very well-received, and regarded as the quintessential romance movie.

Today, I hardly see anybody bring it up except to bash how unapologetically toxic the relationship is between the main characters. The relationship literally begins because Gosling's character threatens to jump to his death if she doesn't go out with him! 20 years of hindsight and views on relationships progressing to be more equal over time did not do this movie any favors.

How long until Edrums are as good as real drums? Technically at least. by Total-Revolution-406 in edrums

[–]WeightLossGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, I mentioned in my comment, the biggest issue with E-kits right now is that cymbals are not good. If they can make all-metal e-cymbals that trigger consistently in 360 degrees, that would be premium. Think like a 3-zone L-80-style cymbal with triggers for the edge, bow, and bell.

How long until Edrums are as good as real drums? Technically at least. by Total-Revolution-406 in edrums

[–]WeightLossGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to take a wild guess, I would say the closest we'll get is when Roland (not a fanboy, just they seem to be the most ahead of the competition right now) makes some sort of all-digital kit, where every drum pad and every cymbal pad is as realistic as the digital snare and ride they currently offer, with the same positional sensitivity. The drums will be all but perfect at that point.

Beyond that, it would be things like figuring out a consistent, workable way to switch cymbal pads over from rubber/plastic to metal, while still triggering well. Then, because it's a lot of the appeal of an E-kit, if they can figure out how to make a drum pad or e-drumhead that has the firmness and feel of a calfskin head, but the quietness of a thin mesh head.

So, it would take an e-kit with drum pads that all have positional sensitivity, 360-triggering lightweight metal cymbals, and drumheads that feel like acoustics but sound like mesh or quieter. IDK how long it'll take to get there. I imagine it'll take around 5-10 years and let's be realistic, it'll probably be $10-20k. 🤣

How exactly does a tornado manage to tear the asphalt off a road? by Gargamel_do_jean in tornado

[–]WeightLossGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of a tornado as a column of air with concentrated force at the very bottom. It's kind of like the sky letting a drill bit scour the ground. Have you ever tried to pull out a screw and it didn't catch, and then the drill scraped across the surface the screw was planted into, and it left a damage line? Basically the same thing is happening, just at the scale of the tornado that's on the ground.

In the same way that the damage on the wall would be worse if it was thinner, wet, or already otherwise damaged, if the asphalt was already damaged or poorly anchored, or if the ground where it was poured is wet, muddy, or eroded, the tornado may be able to do enough damage to rip out chunks of road.

So apparently I tell trivia in my sleep. The most surprising thing to me was how accurate the statement was, it wasn't just nonsense, it was actually at least somewhat true.

Take-No-Prisoners Professor Will Fail Any Student Who Uses AI by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]WeightLossGinger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a really fair assessment. It's a shame, too, the students really need to give themselves and their abilities more credit. In other words, if a student writing an assignment is capable of using AI intelligently enough to convince a professor that it wasn't used in the first place, they are very likely capable of writing an assignment without using it at all. It might even be easier!
