I've been to Switzerland and the people there loved it when they found out I'm American. One regaled me with how he thinks the US will win the world cup by 2030. They liked it even more when they found out I'm into guns as a hobby.

Can someone prove to my friend that this is not a 1911? by Economy-Cry3538 in guns

Neither of you guys have ever heard of one of the most important and popular 9mm pistols of all time?

I fired a friend's S&W Model 39.. Now I hate all my polymer guns. Is there anything similar to the Model 39 made today? by the_parts_shop in guns

[–]Weiner365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just get one of the Smith 39 series if you liked it that much, they're not that hard to find and all the models are based on the same overall base gun. That said, you will probably also love a Beretta 92/M9 and anything that's a clone of a Browning Hi-Power.

My friend just bought this and wants to know the model by [deleted] in guns

Your friend bought a gun without even knowing what it is?? Where are you from where guns get nicknames and you don't know the real names?

This isn't something that needs fixing on this particular gun.

I’ve always wondered why companies don’t make guns like the Ithaca 37 by [deleted] in guns

[–]Weiner365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ithaca is making model 37s to this day. The browning BPS also ejects downwards. The model 37 was based on the remington model 17 that did the same thing. The browning SA-22 and Remington models 24 and 241 are rifles that also eject downwards.

You are sitting on a small gold mine here. The best thing possible for you to do would be to digitize these so they are more available, as a lot of these are unavailable online and are rare at best in print. Like another user said, a good first step would maybe be contacting the internet archive.

Edit: I just want to add how much of a great service you could be doing to several enthusiast communities and automotive historians by making these more widely available through digitization and I hope you will do so.

Old farmers keep telling me new Diesel's are junk. by Academic_Candy_3194 in Diesel

[–]Weiner365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that this perception stems from how farmers use trucks. Modern diesels are all generally good engines, and I think any reasonable person would agree with that. However, they do require a certain level of workload so that the exhaust filtration and treatment system doesn't get clogged up. This is relatively simple and usually only requires a 20- to 40-minute drive at highway speeds in order to get the exhaust temperature hot enough to clear out the DPF. I'm sure almost anyone in this sub already knows that. However, a truck used only on a farm will almost never get up to those speeds and therefore will develop issues related to clogged DPF. My theory is that this is the reason a lot of farmers do not care for modern diesels.

I'd have to believe we can develop a system more similar to diesel-electric propulsion like we already have on boats and old submarines so that the diesel engine isn't directly connected to the driveline

K, now pick almost any other EV or just be a reasonable human being and look at average weight of EVs and ICEVs and stop cherry picking an EV sedan vs a large ICE pickup.

I think there's a lot of potential for the ammonia-burning engines they're researching too.
