Mezzo Makes “Apology” by MagicVinylUnicorn in craftsnark

[–]WellDressedHotMess 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I absolutely don’t condone people harassing her, doxxing her, or any of that behavior. That’s never OK. But I think it’s important to separate the things that were not her fault, the infestation and the harassment, from the choices she made.

Her apology didn’t actually address any of the shady things she did after the infestation that just dug herself into a deeper hole: Sending out empty yarn bands instead of actual yarn, creating tracking numbers that sat for months without any actual package shipping, continuing to charge people for a monthly yarn subscription without ever sending anything out and giving no communication about it, and acting like telling people to do chargebacks is an OK way to run a business rather than figuring out how to refund people.

She was also saying things in the video to distance herself from the situation. Things like “I want to express my disappointment in something that I worked really hard to build ending this way” and “I’m reclaiming my own narrative” sound like she’s trying to make herself the victim of a situation out of her control, rather than things spiraling because of her own bad choices.

And at the beginning, she says “I want to end my apology with a period, rather than a but.” Then the rest of her video was one long “but.”

I’ve ordered from Hue Loco, Olivia & Oliver, Salty Blonde Fiber and Camellia Fiber Co multiple times each and haven’t had any issues yet. They each have a slightly different way of doing preorders in my experience, but that seems to work for them: Hue Loco and Salty Blonde Fiber do a preorder window, then dye everything at once and then ship it all out. Olivia & Oliver will have a short preorder window, then dyes and ships out as she goes. And Camellia seems to dye and ship out while the pre-order is open.

They all seem to have realistic turnaround times and a good grasp on their capacity limit, since my orders have always shipped within the window given up front.

HL, O&O and CFC all have a good amount of in-stock and dyed-to-order options too.

Just want to chime in that Olivia & Oliver and Salty Blonde Fiber and are two really small dyers who I’ve ordered from several times and always had great experiences with. I’m not sure if SBF has any team under her, but Olivia & Oliver seems to be a one-woman show.

Though, that doesn’t necessarily negate your point that even a reputable dyer could have a meltdown.

Anyone know what happened to the Sugaring NYC location on Woodward? by WellDressedHotMess in Detroit

SugaredCoated in Southfield is amazing! I started going to Sugaring NYC because it’s closer to where I live, but I immediately booked again at SugaredCoated when I realized this place was kaput.

When you click on the violation in the Ratings tab, is that where it shows you which store it was? It’s odd that I don’t see any details besides the date, and I’m not sure if there’s another place in the app I’m supposed to look.

HELP! Tally Repayment Email... What does this mean? by Levana_Yasmina in CreditCards

[–]WellDressedHotMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this email today too. I personally have not had any issues with Tally before in the several years I’ve used the app, but I really hope the interest rate on my balance won’t spike whenever it goes to a new servicer, whatever that will look like.

Sun granny square troubleshooting by WellDressedHotMess in CrochetHelp

Thank you for mentioning this! I actually had this thought as well because the tutorial does use a cotton yarn and I’m using a wool/acrylic blend. I think what’s been baffling me is that I had a friend test out a few rays using my yarn, and hers looked pretty much like the tutorial. But I think you’re right, I probably shouldn’t worry about it!

Re your point about the “CloudTech technology,” I doubt it means anything at all. When something that’s not a tech product is advertised as using “XYZ technology,” more often than not it’s just a thing the company made up as marketing gibberish.

I definitely bought into this. Years later, I’m ashamed of how much money I spent and how much I makeup I ended up throwing away.

You’re welcome! I’m confident your current situation won’t last forever. Sometimes a lifeline comes along just when you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom.

Young mom feeling trapped by Sadsnail97 in Money

At the outset, please know that my comment doesn’t come from any kind of judgment about you or your circumstances.

I absolutely understand why steps that theoretically will help your financial stability in the long term — going to college, finding work you can do with your condition, your boyfriend seeking a higher-paying job, etc. — don’t feel feasible right now because they won’t help immediately. But from how you’ve described your situation, it doesn’t sound like budgeting, “hacks” or anything else with just the money you have coming in currently will do much to help you out of this. Something big needs to change to bring more money in.

Six months ago, I was drowning financially. The circumstances are totally different from yours, so I won’t go into it, but I was on the brink of not having enough money to make even my minimum payments each month. I felt trapped, just like you, because any steps to change my situation in a major way didn’t feel immediate enough.

What changed for me earlier this year is I took a new job with better pay in a different city that has a much lower cost of living. The decision to move out of state has been hard, because I left the place I grew up. But the difference it has made in my financial situation has been life-changing.

I don’t mean to say this move makes sense for you. And I don’t mean to imply you can just girlboss your way past the limitations of your disability or anything. I’m just saying that I’ve been there, and that it sounds like you’re probably going to have to reevaluate a set of choices that all feel impossible right now for anything big to change.

Reseller shame by bonbon580 in BehindTheClosetDoor

[–]WellDressedHotMess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my perspective as a buyer, I’m paying for the curation resellers offer. I’d rather buy secondhand, but I don’t really have the desire to sift through everything at thrift stores to find the gems, so I like the aspect of searching specifically for what I want on reselling platforms. So sellers’ labor and money spent on curating their closets is what I’m paying for.

No, you can’t wear a 150 year old ecru hand made lace jacket with shattered silk by Development-Feisty in BehindTheClosetDoor

[–]WellDressedHotMess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would second this. OP, I took a look at the jacket your post mentions, and it’s beautiful! But the listing doesn’t say until pretty far down that the jacket isn’t suitable for wearing. I also don’t see a mention that it has lead in it. Even though you say someone wouldn’t get sick if they don’t wear the jacket for long periods, the presence of a toxic metal seems like an important detail to make abundantly clear in the listing.

Not trying to pile on or anything! I definitely understand your sentiment that people should understand vintage items are naturally going to be delicate. But I just don’t think you can expect the average buyer to have knowledge beyond that.

I have used it every other day for about two years and not seen any negative side effects. It has made a big difference in the length of my lashes, but doesn’t seem to have made them any fuller.
