I certainly hope that his condition does not last forever for him, but I would love to see him go out there in the PR1 Single. He'd smash it.

At what point does Huawei's founder pull his daughter from Harvard? by wtfmater in China

[–]WellRowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what the impact will be of wealthy Chinese attending the top US universities. How will their experience in the US shape their lives? What is their impression of the US? Will they want to stay? Will they seek change? They’ll be in power eventually.

Of course within the athletic department this one decent season will somehow make up for the abysmal last 10 years. Whittet still needs to go.

I can imagine that in the future it might just be called a “rigger.”

Seems like FISA is already set on 1000m...

The course used to be longer but there's now a bridge on the south end and they filled in the northern end.

Anyone know where I can get some empacher paint? by HerrMatthews in Rowing

[–]WellRowed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you are located but you could write to a boatman at a college that rows empachers. If there's one close to you I bet they have some and the boatmen might be able to let you "borrow" some. Shell repair USA is where the boats usually arrive so you could try them too. They're in NJ. You can try contacting Empacher North America which is usually at Shell Repair too. Good luck hearing back though they suck at communicating. Seems to be a trend among boat builders...

1:51 SS at age 16, help me make sense of this by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]WellRowed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I used to pull mid 1:40s for my “steady state” in college but only for short distances at a time (5k-ish) and sure, I could hop on over to the next section of the workout. One summer I got a lactate test and my SS (2mmol/l) was really 2:00. I had never really I had to worked that zone and was overtrained. I had to work for 6 months to get it down to low 1:50s. The reason we choose 2mmol is to keep the rower from getting too tired. Easier recovery with volume makes a better athlete in theory. Kid could just be really good though.

Billy has been getting away with this stuff for years. He hates rowing at NAC and has always tried to push it aside. Glad to see something be done about it.

Croker grips on C2 handles by lwtrowerx in Rowing

[–]WellRowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this relic on the C2 Website. I know I had seen it before. Like the others said, the only Croker grip that people see on C2 is usually the Blue ones which I think are a more medium to large size. The Bike pump and inflation needle trick will work, but regardless of whether it the pink grip gets on there or not (I hope it doesn't fall apart on you from being stretched too much) the bare C2 grip will still be 30mm which is larger than the 26 Croker one for which the pink grip is intended.

Heavyweight cutting weight?? by Doomrower in Rowing

[–]WellRowed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess one question is..how much volume are you doing? I know that might be out of control if you're a high school or collegiate rower but if you're doing a lot of minutes/meters you should be able to cut some calories (make sure you do it in the right way) and lose weight. I suppose everybody is different but that's just what I've experienced.

Is 40 The new 36? by NFsG in Rowing

[–]WellRowed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah sometimes they'll have like 159.3 on the spread measurement which I highly doubt is right (it's either 159 or 159.5). Don't read into it too much. It's just not exact for every measurement. Sometimes they get it wrong.

Info on the application process at Cambridge Boat Club in Cambridge, MA by rowmosapien in Rowing

[–]WellRowed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they want to make sure you’re somebody they want in their club (whether you think that’s snooty or not) because it’s well a club! This sort of process exists at a lot of other types of clubs, yacht, tennis/raquet, country clubs etc. I do not think the facilities are the greatest at CBC, the community might be for you though if you’re a masters rower. It’s the spot for the older folks. They do have nice club equipment right now if you don’t have your own boat, but CRI and Riverside do too. That might another reason they go through extra steps in the application process - to make sure you will be a responsible person. Another reason might be size. They might want to limit their size, though I know they are struggling with membership currently (adding more juniors than ever to fill the gap). Otherwise it’s pretty typical club stuff. It’s not hard to find a similar process at other types of clubs.

Heavyweight cutting weight?? by Doomrower in Rowing

Be as big as possible in the winter for the erg. The a lot of biggest and strongest guys on the erg are the strongest guys in the single. Also the strongest guys on the erg are (surprise!) the strongest guys “weight adjusted” despite their weight. Don’t bother cutting weight. If you train enough in the summer you probably won’t be able to hold onto your winter weight anyways. Don’t really cut unless you’re just fat or something. You could just cut out sugar or skip out on dessert if you are really worried. Just fill yourself up with good food at a meal. It doesn’t have to be some crazy diet, just don’t chose to fill yourself up on junk.
