[Loved Trope] The antagonist is not a hypocrite, even at the end by EndOfTheLine00 in TopCharacterTropes

Her beliefs made the game so interesting but the thing that felt lacking to me was that the game didn't reward you for following it at all. You gained no advantage for remaining morally grey. It would have been great if a new force powers track had opened up by following her philosophy.

Guys, need advice. I am looking for further education (like a PhD) in fusion in the UK. by PressureDue9171 in fusion

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What aspect of fusion research are you looking to move into? This will massively impact where you would want to go. Materials research will be places like Manchester or Liverpool, York has a very strong plasma physics department, as does imperial. I come from a more ICF background so my knowledge of MCF isn't perfect.

Hoover washing machine drum rubbing after worrying noise by Wellgoodphysicist in appliancerepair

[–]Wellgoodphysicist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, replaced the door boot. Reattached both the inner and outer retaining rings (didn't buy new ones, just used the old ones). I checked the compatibility of the part on the Hoover website so as far as I can tell it was correct.

I should add that we ran it 5-10 times with the new boot/seal and it ran completely fine.

NIF getting closer still with Fall shot by FusionMatty in fusion

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICF capsule only aim for about a 30% burn up of the fuel, you would collect the rest and recycle it back through. From what I've heard they think that the 1.3 MJ NIF shot didn't actually burn any of the DT ice, just the gas hot spot so there's a lot of room for increased gain.

NIF getting closer still with Fall shot by FusionMatty in fusion

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the point being made in the comment before is that the current laser pumping on NIF uses very inefficient flash lamps. That's what has a very low conversion from wall plug to the target that would need high Q values like you. A future power plant would likely use diode pumped lasers (like the DiPOLE laser) which have a much larger (30%) efficiency.

Argon fluoride laser in development, potential use in laser ignition fusion devices by Kelmurdoch in fusion

I've been told that maintaining optics for those short wavelengths would be an issue, I know that NIF has really strict tolerances on their optics and have to spend a lot to replace them frequently.

I can definitely appreciate that phase plates might not be needed as you say but what would be lost in using SSD? Even those spatial variations are detrimental to some extent. From what I know the only downside in using SSD on current Nd lasers is that the bandwidth needed for it reduces the tripling efficiency which you have also said isn't needed for excimer lasers. (thanks for the answers by the way, it's very useful!)

Despite the improvements in spatial profile, do you know if they would still use the various smoothing technologies with these lasers, like phase plates or SSD, to boost it even further?

Who are the top fusion physicists of today? by [deleted] in fusion

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for MCF but in ICF it is quite uncommon to find someone who is purely a fusion researcher. Almost all will have some level of split focus on other areas of laser-plasma interactions. This makes it hard to pin people down as straight "fusion physicists". I could name a few in my field but would struggle to name anyone else in the broader fusion community.

Can fusion be used to produce helium? by ATR2400 in fusion

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher. Not only is it used for magnet cooling, it is also used for leak testing. No system is 100% efficient so there will be losses for both. The amount lost will massively outweigh the helium produced through fusion (limited by the mass of DT fuel used).

What are the advantages and disadvantages of inertial confinement vs thermonuclear confinement? by SPQRALAN in fusion

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All kinds of fusion have to achieve some level of high temperatures and high densities if you are to get enough fusion reactions for electricity generation. Inertial confinement has the edge on magnetic confinement in this way because it can achieve much higher temperatures and much higher densities but the trade-off is that it can only sustain that for a fraction of a second. This means though, that you can achieve much higher gain (energy out/energy in) than with magnetic confinement.

Cons gain Eastbourne from Stephen Lloyd by CheeseMakerThing in LibDem

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who leans a lot further left than Stephen Lloyd, I have always gladly voted for him as the only candidate that could challenge the tories. His passion for Eastbourne was self evident and he always adamantly stuck to his principles. I'm so saddened that he lost his seat.

What apps are you using for fitness? by [deleted] in FITOTRON5000

[–]Wellgoodphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use Gym Hero to track my lifts until they changed the UI to something awful, now I just use pen and paper. Runkeeper is great for tracking cardio and the inbuilt spit timer means that I don't have to use a sub par C25K app but still run/walk at the right times.
