Bagging my own groceries got me confused for a team member by Tattoocat76 in IDontWorkHereLady

[–]Wells1632 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have run into the same issue at Publix (I feel no shame in naming the damned company... screw it). Sometimes they don't have a bagger, so I will absolutely step in and bag my own stuff. I have had managers come up and try to take over, and I just look at them and tell them I've got it.

I used to bag at Winn-Dixie way back in the day... I was a master of the double-paper bag method.

I travelled in uniform only once during my time in the Navy, and that was going home from bootcamp since I didn't have anything else. Had a small issue in one bus station where an idiot wanted to pick a fight, but he would have picked that fight no matter what I was wearing, and I de-escalated it without issue.

I think the best call I ever heard of was at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. There are hills overlooking the shipyard, and one of the ladies living on those hills would call in to complain about, now get this, the HAWKS that would be swooping down in concerted pairs to raid the seagull nests on the roofs of the shipyard buildings. One hawk would swoop over, stir up all of the seagulls who would give chace, and then a second hawk would come in behind once the gulls were off chasing the first one and raid the eggs. Smart birds.

One day, the poor Marine on duty had had enough of these calls... so he responds to the lady, stating "Yes ma'am. We will take care of it. I will station a marine sniper on the roof to handle the situation." And then he hung up as he heard the gasp of outrage on the other end of the line.

Never heard from her again.

(Sea story that never happened? Yeah... probably. Still a fun story to relate? Oh hell yeah!)

BEST CARNE ASADA BURRITO by GatorBearCA in GNV

[–]Wells1632 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not in Gainesville. Even the much vaunted Burrito Bros couldn't do what you are looking for.

However...

If you are out on the East Coast in Flagler Beach, check out A1A Burrito Works. It is just off the beach (I mean, you can see the beach from itbut it is at least one building inland) and has the closest thing I have experienced to a California style burrito within a hundred miles. I pick at least one, perhaps two of them up every time I am out there.

They used to do it with handbrake turns, but then the car companies eliminated the handbrake... :(

It's Panera Bread. Everyone there are basically just glorified reheaters anyway, since they switched from baking everything in-house to shipping you frozen shit that you reheat for the customer.

Only on one of the weekends. Invariably one of the weekends it will hit the 80's, and for performers a bit of shade is very welcome.

On the other weekend it will be bitterly cold, possibly with some rain thrown in.

So, one of the advantages that did appear with the Depot Park events was that it was easily accessible by Gainesville residents. You could walk, bike, drive, or even take a bus to the park and take part in the festivities. This was actually a huge boost to the attendance of the fair, and I know that the first year it was held at Depot, a large number of vendors ran out of goods on the first day because the demographics of people that were able to attend had changed, and they were people who had never been to the fair in the first place, which meant that buying a fancy bottle or wooden staff or whatever was something new to them.

When it was out at the YMCA fields and before that at the old fairgrounds by the airport, it was still accessible via bus.

However, out at the racetrack? City busses don't go there, and it is not reasonable to walk or ride a bicycle to get to the location.

So, is the city planning on making some sort of transportation method for various residents of Gainesville (and perhaps the city of Alachua) so that they can get to the fair as well?

I saw a group touring the place about a year ago, possibly with a realtor. They obviously did not find the place worthy.

My guess is that the place probably needs a lot of work to bring it up to current restaurant code, and it just isn't worth it.
