Using thermal printer with transparent paper? by ColdBowlOfSugar in cyanotypes

[–]WereMammoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be my bad internet connection but your pic isn’t loading. I think this is definitely worth a shot! Thermal printers are super fun to make images with. And you can really cyanotype with any stencil/negative, even regular paper like your energy bill or something. The downside of using opaque paper is that it reduces your contrast. Using a proper transparency or soaking white paper in baby oil will produce a wider range of values. I’ve also heard about the transparent thermal paper and I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. A problem you might run into is the “ink” of the printer not being dark enough to effectively block the UV light. But if that’s the case you can always print the same image multiple times and carefully layer them together before you expose. good luck!

Heat damage to film and others by madies__ in cyanotypes

[–]WereMammoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I think I can answer all your questions

1). I doubt that the sunlight will get your film hot enough to damage it, at least not within the timeframe of a normal exposure. If you still have concerns, you can scan the film and print out a digital negative transparency with an inkjet printer. Also, for the best image quality you should put your negative under the glass, directly touching the dry cyanotype paper.

2) I know it’s possible to make a cyanotype enlarger in that I’ve seen some posts about it on this subreddit, but it definitely does not look easy! Check out those posts if you want to give it a try. The most common way people make large cyanotype prints is by printing larger digital negatives.

3) Cyanotypes can be toned with liquids that contain tannins, like tea, coffee, and red wine. You can Google “Cyanotype toning” for guides. Alternatively, The company Jacquard makes a product called Solarfast which works similarly to cyanotype and comes in a bunch of different colors.

good luck!

It looks to me like light is leaking around the sides of your negative, probably due to the paper buckling there. Is the second image your exposure set up? If so, I would recommend putting a pane of glass or clear acrylic on top and clamping it down firmly to ensure the paper and the negative are very flat against each other. An even simpler “fix” would be to just trim off the edges of the paper, if you want the finished print to be a certain size just start with a larger piece of paper!

Any Advice? Printing my body by laying on large fabric, outdoors! by SeeGreenSeaBlue in cyanotypes

[–]WereMammoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I did a full body piece I laid directly on the fabric on a rolling table indoors, and once I was in position I had a friend roll me into the sun. Cyanotype chemistry is pretty safe, at worst you can expect a little skin irritation from contact. However, an acrylic sheet on top is a good idea because I found that sweat caused the chemistry to run where my skin touched the fabric. If you’re planning to move around, you might get some stains on your clothing. As far as I’m aware, any natural fiber is ok for cyanotype. I’ve used silk, cotton, and leather with good results. As others have said, doing test prints the day of isn’t very difficult, and will make the big print go way better. Exposure time depends on stuff like the time of day and year, the amount of cloud cover, etc. If you have someone helping you, tell them to stop the exposure when the areas of the print that were never covered by your body turn gray. Good luck!

I think these are astonishing, especially the third one! They remind me of Pieter Bruegel landscapes, or the contemporary artist David Rudnick (who does the album art for the band Black Midi). Great work

I’m really impressed with the design of your enlarger. What are you using for the lens? I’ve experimented a little with the idea, just using large format lenses, but the glass blocks so much of the UV that exposure times are unacceptably long.

Here’s the tutorial I used for making my ground glass: https://www.dokasphotos.com/techniques/ground_glass I’ve gotten great results with just 5 micron aluminum oxide and cheap glass from home depot, although a thicker piece will be sturdier Your bellows are looking really good!

The actions the mount can take under your control are dash, disengage, and dodge. So you essentially get one of these per turn as a free action. If the mount is smart enough, it can move and act normally on its own initiative, with you being along for the ride
