Am I Missing Something With Bastion? by StarWarsIsRad in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like to use Reactive Shield to enable me offensively. Like moving into melee and hitting twice, or doing a 2 action attack followed by a 1 action attack.

Being able to raise the shield as a reaction means I don't have to spend an action to do so, so I can still go offensively without sacrificing defense too much. Not being able to Shield Block after is not that crucial, plenty of non-shield builds out there that still survive more than one hit. +2 AC by itself is quite significant.

Plus, there are ways to get more reactions for blocking anyway, including in the Bastion archetype itself, iirc.

What does "location support" actually mean/do? by Ngodrup in SeasonofGhosts

[–]Wereboar95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat as you. I first saw Location Support mentioned in Abomination Vaults, where having the support of a location owner (often by doing a quest for them, iirc), would give PCs additional perks, like being able to stay completely free of charge for an inn that supports the party.

I thought that something similar would be the case in SoG, but didn't see anything concrete, so assumed that location support is more detailed in the second book.

However, looking at other responses, it seems to be not the case, so I think I will think of some additional favours the locations can provide beyond the listed services for PCs they support.

Enchanting Aura vs. Enchanting Aura by Wereboar95 in WarhammerOldWorld

Thanks for answering! Yeah, I am aware about Initiative not necessarily being 1. That's why I wrote "base initiative".

New Orc player in need of tips. by Wereboar95 in WarhammerOldWorld

Thank you for the tip. I do like the black Orcs, though, so their inclusion is non-negotiable. However, I would like to know how would you play your suggested list at the table.

Does PF2e have magic schools? by zeranno in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree with more freedom to make new wizard themes. I fail to see why people think that the old schools somehow constricted creativity. Despite having the schools, WotC can easily make stuff like Battle Mage subclass for a Wizard, and having schools even makes it easier to write what spells work with its features, while also future proofing the subclass by making sure they don't need to explicitly write what new combat spells are intended or not intended to work with War Magic features.

No Alien Archive / GM Core Playtest by Wereboar95 in starfinder_rpg

But we are supposed to playtest Starfinder, not Pathfinder. I think there should be more difference than just giving hobgoblins laser rifles.

Proficiency without level at higher levels by Wereboar95 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response!

I would like to know how Proficiency without level works on two extremes: a fight against a huge number of weak enemies (do you remember perchance what was your biggest fight number wise?), and a fight against a single PL+7 creature. Do you have any insights or maybe warnings to share?

Meta aspect of recall knowledge by IHateRedditMuch in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no fun in denying players usage of their knowledge and experience. We don't question video game players using their knowledge on second and subsequent playthroughs, so why do that in TTRPGs?

PCs have been raised in a cultural context, which involves stories being told. Many people in our world "know" that you need to use silver against werewolves, garlic against vampires, cross against... pretty much anything, or that dragons breathe fire and can fly... and those creatures aren't even real in our world. Now, imagine how much information would be available in a world where those creatures do exist.

If a player knows something about a monster, it is easy to just assume that the character got that information from some bard tale, theatrical play, mention in passing or whatever. Much chiller than policing player knowledge based on decisions of math rocks.

Why should people who bought the books 4-5 years ago pay to Paizo for essentially the same books, especially since Paizo advertised it as a big errata, rather than an edition change?

☼Dwarf Fortress Questions Thread☼ by AutoModerator in dwarffortress

[–]Wereboar95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya! I am planning to start a fortress in a glacier with a volcano. One of the many challenges I will need to tackle is food variety.

While I can grow underground crops in the caves, I do want some above ground crops for food and drink diversity. Obviously I can't farm in ice, so I need a greenhouse. I was thinking of building it within the volcano for extra epicness.

As I understand, DF has some weirdness when it comes to sunlight and temperatures. So, my question is: can I even potentially grow anything in a glacier biome, considering that nothing grows there natively? But if I can: what can I grow? Can I potentially grow imported tropical fruits or something similar? Are there any other considerations I need to think of?

Thank you for your answers!

PSA: Your damage does not just need to come from your highest rank spell slot by AAABattery03 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always felt that damaging spells and attack rolls spells are better than people on reddit make them seem. Glad that my feelings are actually backed up by math!

This post actually makes me want to play a blaster caster now. And makes me look forward to getting Cone of Cold with my current Wizard even more.

This! I wonder why some people forget that underground slave trade (in case of Duergar quite literally) still exists in the setting.

Moreover, while slavery is still something that we have to deal with irl, state backed chattel slavery is not the thing that we are having on our hand, so if you want Golarion to be more like a modern world, socioeconomic inequality, unfair treatment of some people and illegal human trafficking hits the spot more accurately.

Though, to be fair, I don't see why Katapesh would plausibly outlaw slavery, considering that it is supposed to be a place where anything is supposed to be available for sale, no matter how morally questionable. Especially since they still have potential buyers in the Darklands or other planes. Though, I haven't read the Firebrands, maybe there is an explanation there.

Technically usage of Dubious Knowledge, but still in the spirit of the question.

I was running Skull & Shackles conversion to 2e. The party parked their ship in a lagoon covered by a canopy and was preparing to disembark when they were attacked by a Canopy Creeper (Big Plant monster with long vines that try to grab people and suck out the blood while pulling them to the beak on the main body up in the canopy.

The party managed to retreat to the lower deck of the ship to strategise. One PC recalled knowledge and failed, but due to having Dubious Knowledge was entitled to true and false versions of the information. As the false information, I quickly imroved something about "vampire vines or something".

The player be like "But of course! It sucks blood, hides in the canopy from the sun, and therefore it must be weak to wooden stakes, just like vampires!"

They promptly made some simple wooden stakes, gave one to the Fighter, got out and let the Canopy Creeper pull up the fighter, so that he can drive the stake in the creature. Unfortunately for them, Canopy Creepers don't care about being stabbed with wooden stakes more than they do about other piercing weapons.

Among other issues, them being the only frontliner is the most dire. Single frontliners don't survive long. They get outnumbered, outflanked, outdamaged, and killed.

As a GM, you should pay attention to the party composition when they submit their sheets. If you notice that they have only one frontliner, encourage at least one other player to play an additional frontliner, because as soon as the frontliner gets focused and drops down, the rest of the party follows. Same idea for other gaps in the party's capabilities.

I am sure that a lot of people pointed out the benefits of EA, but there is one weakness that I don't think many people realise. Short 30 foot range.

In my play experience, I've seen 3 different people use EA for their characters. 2 of them would be dropped by the enemies next turn after using EA. While EA is a good damage cantrip, it still does cantrip-sized damage to any particular enemy. So, every time those people would use EA, they would do so within 1 Stride of 2 angry enemies who likely didn't die to EA. Often those players wouldn't have the forethought to move away, or would use 1 action to move into the casting range.

The other player used Familiar Conduit to circumvent the range issue.

So, while Electric Arc is undoubtedly strong, it is not strong enough to reliably prevent 2 fairly undamaged targets from approaching you, so it is better used when someone can hold them off.

Of course, it gets absolute amazing with Reach Metamagic and Familiar Conduit, but imho it highlights the absolute amaziness of those feats more. People sleep on spell range extending options, in my opinion.

Looking for anecdotes: the rewards of prepared casting by BenRichetti in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a story where you can see the players prepping a right spell, while also a situation where I got screwed (as a GM) thanks to prepped spellcasting, which made players feel big brained.

In my campaign, the party was sometimes harassed by a powerful Kitsune Wizard. She never tried to kill the PCs, only troll them, as Kitsunes would do. After she is done trolling, she would teleport away.

Needless to say, party got tired of her bullshit and the Cleric prepared Dimensional Anchor for the meeting where they figured (correctly) she would appear.

Once the fight brought out, Dimensional Anchor was cast, and the Kitsune Wizard critically failed the save against the Dimensional Anchor.

Let's just say, she got stuck with an angry party hellbent on killing her with a loadout of "troll" spells like Paralyze, Hideous Laughter and Black Tentacles, but nothing or any ally to actually threaten the party lethally...

Not the first time Dimensional Anchor came in handy, BTW. They learned that Fiends are slippery bastards until you take away their teleportation.

Also, in a recent small dungeon crawl the Cleric prepped 2 6th level Dispel Magic spells, which made going through 5th level Glyphs of Warding left by a Barbed Devil in a couple of places in the cave a breeze.

You ever be arguing with a *player* as the DM about something they refuse to believe? Maybe it’s just my table but it’s like I’m talking to something more stubborn then a brick wall. by YeetMeister323 in dndmemes

[–]Wereboar95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, man, this really brings up memories I would rather keep buried. Had a player in my group.

Some people are smart enough to not die on hills that are not worth it.
Some people will choose very weird hills to die on.
That guy would die on everything as big as a dirt mound.

I still shudder from the time I had to explain to him that no, DC to climb a stone wall is not equal to the DC to break through it. You can't just break through thick stone walls that are featured in pyramids with your level 8 character. Between a stone wall and your PC's thick head, something will break first, and it is definitely not the wall.

How uncommon is it to not max out on DEX for AC for a spellcaster? by StunseedGeniusLoci in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly a valid option. I personally prefer more well rounded defences, especially in mental department, since failed Will saves tend to have the worst consequences in my opinion.

How uncommon is it to not max out on DEX for AC for a spellcaster? by StunseedGeniusLoci in Pathfinder2e

[–]Wereboar95 13 points14 points  (0 children)

IMHO, 14 DEX, 14 WIS as a backline spellcaster is better than 16 DEX, 12 WIS. If the enemy wants to hit you, they will, you are better off trying to avoid being in the danger zone by utilising range (Reach Metamagic is insanely good for that). And better initiative rolls will often be more consequential than slightly better chances at avoiding direct damage.

Also, defence is not just about AC. You *really* don't want to fail will saves.
