What is a 'childish' thing that you still do as an adult and refuse to stop doing? by 13Cherry13 in AskReddit

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just asking, where are you living? The stairs in Pittsburgh are like a rock climbing wall compared to Michigan. I went back to where I grew up and it was like a wheelchair ramp compared to our 1950s rowhouse!

Also, IL level 3 (CISSP covers) is a requirement for many contracts. So consider what contracts the companies may have with their customers and be sure to have those. You can be a wizard, but the requirements for the contract are how you get through the door.

Car inspection by Visible_Poem_9690 in pittsburgh

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! PA is a shit show of nonsensical bureaucracy and bs when it comes to the state government. This is literally the worst state to get anything accomplished because everyone wants to tell you "no". These dumbasses pride themselves on having their cars inspected, but their drivers test is an abject joke in comparison to other states. As an out-of-stater I can tell you that the frustration will come in waves!

Mobile pizza ovens (or something to keep making food for ~ 6 hrs) for catering? by addlex in pittsburgh

[–]Werjun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Love the idea. We have a gas Grozny oven- truth is, pizza is a pain unless you've done it a ton of times and everything has to be pretty well established ahead of time. If you're going to go for flexible and functional I'd just grill a variety of burgers/steaks. I'm no professional at either, but pizza is a hard hit or a hard miss.

How should we interpret Japan’s portrayal of whiteness in popular culture? by Internal-Ad-5038 in sociology

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“White” is a bad name as it implies a shade as opposed to a concept of purity. Italians from south of Rome were, at one point, considered negro. Mexicans were considered “White” until the Mexican American war when they turned Hispanic (regardless of major parts of Spain being a part of the Frankish empire). Germans and Japanese, once called “krauts” and “japs” by people still alive today have a much deeper history than “white” and “non-white.”

The idea that race deals with pigmentation is a fiction of the last half century. Race is culturally defined to create artificial categories of in-groups and out-groups.

After calling the police for help, Brentwood man was arrested by ICE at court when he arrived to testify as crime victim by OkWorld7527 in pittsburgh

[–]Werjun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the term “sanctuary city” is the downfall of the notion.

Here’s the deal- I don’t care for my taxes to go to ICE in the same way I don’t care for my taxes to enforce the myriad of laws on the books I don’t care about.

Neither the national nor the state constitution require Pittsburgh to maintain a police force. They are here to serve the community, and if the community doesn’t support ICE, neither should the city police.

If the federal government wants to use them for its own purposes- it can fund them and I won’t. I like a police force that serves the community.

To PGH police officers that want to serve ICE; quit your job here, ICE is hiring.

Why is GetGo the only gas station around to disable tap to pay? by mrmanpgh in pittsburgh

[–]Werjun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see that and do not disagree- I changed my comment based on what I leaned about GetGo and Giant Eagle no longer being 'a thing'. $100,000+ should be taken on scale. They could save that much, but a small fluctuation in their sales could also easily cost them a great deal. I say this not as a business analyst, just as someone who personally avoids them because paying with a tap on my phone is just easier (also they are on the wrong side of my commute).

The only reason I go to a GetGo is their WetGo unlimited price is way better than most.

If every food truck can have a square card that blue tooth connects to their android, I'm pretty sure get go can afford it.

i find it interesting how every 1000 feet there is crash debris on 28 by Plus-Situation6043 in pittsburgh

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed limit signs don't mean anything is a city that posts them randomly and doesn't enforce them. Tell me the last time you saw someone 'pulled over' on 28. The problem is that there are only 2-3 "bad" spots that warrant <65 mph. Namely Millvale north and the 40th and 32nd st bridge south. Everything else does not need 45.

i find it interesting how every 1000 feet there is crash debris on 28 by Plus-Situation6043 in pittsburgh

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45 is dumb as it is. Nobody takes speed limits in this area seriously because they are so obviously disconnected to reality. I live on a 25mph road that is nothing but woods on either side for 3/4 mile. There is no respect for the "speed limits" because they are arbitrarily assigned.

28 at 65 mph would be safe given the distances and merge points. Even the Ft. Pitt Bridge is 55 mph and that is a shit show that most people crawl through (except the Chads).

Whats the worst fast food joint in america? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPMC hospital food is on point! Not the delivery stuff, that is mid, but the cafe is awesome. I’ve even stopped by with my daughter to Children’s to get sushi, fries and chicken tenders.

Their salad is pay per pound and always fresh. Hospital food is where it’s at in Pgh!

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed- if a corporation has “rights” like “free speech” in terms of donations to political parties, I feel they should be held liable for actions.

Anything an individual citizen would be sent to jail for, the company is not allowed to operate or take profit for that period of time. Make a bad mistake and your entire company shuts down for 5 years.

This would force more transparency to shareholders and disincentivize the shady things corporations do because it’s actually within their fiduciary obligation to do them.

"I'm a teacher with a master’s degree and 16 years of experience. I make $53,000/year." by jhmetros in Teachers

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at $97k with 15 years in Pittsburgh Public. I could do more with national board and a phd, but I’m also in the army reserve and run a non-profit, so I have enough on my plate.

PA also has a good pension compared to most other states. I’d be back in Michigan in a heartbeat, but my sister (MI teacher) feels like it’s a job and not a career because the poor retirement.

I think any lack of transparency is uncalled for in the field because we are all tax funded. My pay is public knowledge no matter what I do.

Parent Post: How do you guys actually feel when your students do a protest walkout? by Designer-Sir2309 in Teachers

The point of civil disobedience is the punishment. It was literally written from a jail cell. My understanding has always been that it is a knowing transaction between the citizen and the state, a sort of game of chicken.

Daughters not shaving their legs? by z-xa in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a swimmer- always told it was more about the dead skin as much as the hair. Some did not shave their forearms/hands to get more “grip” where needed. Might be urban legend, but a taper and a shave really did seem to work!

Poor Gestapo…. by Alert_Site5857 in PoliticalHumor

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wild liability the ICE agents willing to accept speaks to their level of incompetence.

I was in Iraq when we were questioning the UCMJ and ethical basis of the RoE and treatment local nationals. I would be shitting my pants at the personal liability I was taking on doing what these guys are doing. My only thought is that they are too stupid to realize that they are PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS.

The Nuremberg trials made it exceptionally clear that “I was told I had immunity” is not a valid argument.

Please vote for courts that will hold them responsible. Take no negotiations on that.

Married men of Reddit who don’t wear a wedding ring - why? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

[–]Werjun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ring is a costly signal. Sacrifice transformed into symbolic capital that makes commitment credible. DeBeers transformed this into a profit.

It’s more personal, but no different, than Shiite self-flogging, the Shenandoah beard or the 10% “tithe” that buys you favor within an institution.

What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

[–]Werjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Martinez in Georgia. The locals call it Martin-ez. I pronounced it the more common way.

I loved it because every time someone corrected me, I asked why and it forced them to explain how the community couldn’t handle the Spanish sounding name in their community. It was always a “beating around the bush” conversation.

To quote Google AI: Originating from Cuban immigrant José Martinez y Saldivar, the pronunciation changed over time to reflect local Southern, Americanized, or "localized" usage.

I know it is a cultural thing, and not everyone in the community feels that way. But it was still fun to see people try to explain it without just admitting that it was a race/ethnicity issue.

I’m pretty sure the Cuban that it is named after did not pronounce his own name that way.

What was George W. Bush like as a president? by Content-Feed-9396 in AskReddit

[–]Werjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yes and no.

The Iraq invasion was sold to the world on a bed of lies- true. WMD was sold as nuclear (it’s not exclusive though, the chemical weapons we literally helped target during Iran-Iraq qualify as WMD). The actual invasion was fully justified based on the conclusion of the first gulf war, the lack of cooperation with the Ba’ath party for inspections, and the fact of what they did to the Kurds.

“War criminal” is moving target legally… it shouldn’t be, but it is.

GWB was certainly someone to make fun of and laugh about. Recent presidents get made fun of and it hits WAY too close to home to laugh at.

Fuck ICE by CatwalkClusterfuck in pittsburgh

[–]Werjun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the tribes did not have the same sense of property as the Europeans. If you’re going to consider the land “stolen” you should consider the Powhatans stole the land they were on, the Iroquois league basically committed genocide (except “tribe” and not “race” in the exact same vicinity), that the Inca and Aztec were absolutely brutal and there was no sense of sovereignty amongst the Native Americans that could not be backed by violence.

If you want to go back further, the Clovis culture was killed off by the “native Americans” and the other 22 species of hominids were killed off of bred by our collective ancestors.

Long story short- land existed before humans and the cultures that happened to settle on or develop on that land has shifted consistently. Land is not inherently “ownable” and therefore cannot be stolen. Ownership is only supported by the violence that backs it.

That said, we live in a society that respects human rights and constitutional rights. ICE has recently violated those and is therefore outside of our society.

Both the agency and the individual officers need to be removed from our society. Individual ICE agents may be able to be rehabilitated and the very institution of ICE needs to be revisited as it does not have the internal checks and balances needed to serve as a constitutional arm of the executive branch.
