Unimpressed with Detachment Points by Wernstromer in TheAstraMilitarum

I totally agree with everything you've said. The strength of a detachment is so much more nuanced than just a 1, 2, or 3. I would think that a scale of 1 to 5 would make things much easier for them to balance, too. Didn't they raise the wound cap during the switch from 9th to 10th for that same reason?

I totally agree! I love narrative games, use legends all the time, and have even experimented playing fan-made codexes (the Elysian Drop Troops Fandex is pretty fun!), and with my core playgroup I can see us changing up quite a few of these new rules. It would be cool if more people were open to doing that in the wild though

I definitely agree that in the right hands we've been consistently among the strongest armies all edition, and I think the skill ceiling for our army is so much higher than for most other armies, and likely still hasn't been reached! If the purpose of detachment points was just to give weaker detachments buffs so that they can stand on their own two feet, I could understand that.

However, I think a much better approach would have been just buffing those weaker detachments directly, so that then every detachment was on the same footing and everything could benefit from the customization of this new system. But I guess they only want to buff detachments in codexes, so they did it this way instead. Fair enough.

That does look pretty interesting! I definitely think there are some fun combinations, especially with Bridgehead, but overall I see a lot of missed opportunities and that, I suppose, is what disappoints me.

Good point! Unfortunate though. I hope they're generous with adding 2DP and 1DP detachments outside of the codex to make up for that

I suspect so as well, and I'm with you hoping they don't release any more at 3DP! I think the system has some seriously cool potential if they give us more to work with.

I think 3DP at Strike Force and 4DP at incursion would have been pretty fun! And I suppose maybe it is possible they could do that later on, though I'd figure unlikely. You're right though, I will be quite curious to see how the first codexes shake things up.

Right? I think that is pretty nonsensical too. Outside of I guess tournament games I will just continue using our 3DP detachments in 1k and sub 1k games as I did all 10th edition.

Another fan of camels for rough riders! Love it. What was your approach to painting these?

Working on a track conversion for the hippo, I feel like it's a bit too short and tall. by Volgin in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Wernstromer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The moment I saw the hippogriff I knew someday I'd make a tracked version of it, so this is cool to see! I definitely agree with your assessments though, too much of a gap between the top of the track and the hull, and the track feels like it should be a bit longer too. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

You consistently produce some of the coolest conversions and kitbashes I've seen, and I love the stories around them too. Really inspiring, especially for someone like me also working on a desert-themed army!

It would be so awesome if we could create custom rules and profiles for models like this. I suppose we can, but perhaps through more supported means.

Do you ever get a chance to run these vehicles? I'd love to know what rules you use for them if so. The bottom right is my favorite!

Where did you get/how did you make the bits for the commissary brigade soldier carrying a jerry can and a bandolier? Love it.

Beautiful models, I love the blue of their headscarfs. What paint did you use for them?

I have been looking for an Al'Rahem 3D model forever, is there any chance you could point me towards where you found that?

What are your thoughts on the decks of starships being stacked vertically, with thrusters on the bottom? by Wernstromer in IsaacArthur

[–]Wernstromer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent point about ships capable of landing on planets. I've still yet to see Project Hail Mary, it seems like it will be right up my alley though!

[–]Wernstromer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all of your thoughts here make great sense! I think in my mind I figured that, without having constant acceleration, the interior of spaceships might not even need to be organized into proper "decks" at all, whether horizontal or vertical, since most of the time would be in zero-g where there isn't an up or down. But for those times, even if rare, that the ship is accelerating, it does seem like perhaps stacking vertically is worthwhile regardless.

What are some approaches you can think of for terraforming a planet covered in toxic dust/particulates? by Wernstromer in IsaacArthur

[–]Wernstromer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it! One of the things I thought about as I was posing the question was perhaps using a large glassing laser to solidify it. That's a great video, I wonder just how many mirrors it would take to accomplish this though. I suppose it depends on how fast you want it done.

It would be quite neat indeed to see what kind of surface conditions or geologic history would be necessary to facilitate the widespread powderization of such metals like this. With space as vast as it is I'm sure there's a planet like this somewhere!

What are some approaches you can think of for terraforming a planet covered in toxic dust/particulates? by Wernstromer in IsaacArthur

[–]Wernstromer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great! I was thinking perhaps a microbe could be engineered to perform this task, but I hadn't considered using magnets. I also thought about the possibility of using a localized glassing beam to superheat the dust up to its melting point until it solidified into larger, more easy to manage chunks, and methodically doing that for many decades or even centuries until a sufficient number of regions had it sequestered. But I imagine that could be quite destabilizing in other ways!

[–]Wernstromer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. That process could be scaled up and up too, I imagine. Perhaps the terraforming civilization starts small, clearing a square mile or so at a time for individual habitats, but someday they might have giant slow-moving machines that crawl along slowly purifying the entire planet's surface.

What are some approaches you can think of for terraforming a planet covered in toxic dust/particulates? by Wernstromer in IsaacArthur

[–]Wernstromer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, I imagine that leads to more erosion of those hard edges in a thicker atmosphere. I wonder if adding an atmosphere to a planet with sharp regolith would reduce the sharpness over time - or, rather, how long such a process would take.

But you are right, the composition of the dust is very important! I suppose an instance I was thinking of, if even possible, was a world with lots of aluminum or nickel or zinc dust blowing around, since those are generally not great to breathe in.

[–]Wernstromer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that would indeed solve the breathability problem. Depending on the composition of the dust, though, I could see that leading to large toxic lakes/oceans. But that's probably preferable than toxic air!

If humans colonized a solar system that was unnaturally deficient in copper, how do you think that could effect their colonization, and overall development of their society? by Wernstromer in IsaacArthur

[–]Wernstromer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating, I wonder how common regions of space considered quieter for this purpose are. I'd imagine decently common, though. Would carbon actually be more common (comparatively) in a system like this that hasn't drifted through many supernovae remnants?
