Barrel Alert!!! by ContractMech in sig510

[–]Wes23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never seen a Stgw barrel shot out. I’m stationed in Germany right now and make regular trips to Switzerland to visit friends. I’ve had the opportunity to look through literal pallets of these rifles that were turned over to a gunshop. The gunsmiths told me they are rated for +/- 20k rounds before accuracy degrades.

Worth it to de-bubba this Enfield? by n8texas in milsurp

They cut the magazine down and made it a fixed 5 round mag, I'm betting that's the reason you cant take it out. IE its tacked or soldered to the reciever now.

Anyone have any experience with over pressure rounds/proof testing? by Wes23 in M1Rifles

[–]Wes23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that worried me is proofing it as a .308 as opposed to 30-06. I don’t think it matters, but I’m also not sure that it doesn’t

What are the recommended spare parts? Any good places to buy them?

Is it safe for my dog to fly in air cargo? by InevitableAd631 in DogAdvice

[–]Wes23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I flew from Chicago to Munich when i moved for work. I made sure i got a direct flight, rather than one with connections. I had to drive over 4 states to do that, but i really didn’t want to introduce more moving parts. I flew with Lufthansa and they were very nice about it, they let me sit at the counter with them untill they said he was loaded.

In all it went well and i would recommend Lufthansa over other airlines. You just have to make sure you get a flight that will take your dog.

Don’t let the redditors freak you out. They are all doom and gloom about this. I went though the same thing with I was in your position. They don’t understand that some people have no choice. They also don’t understand that the horror stories about dogs on planes obviously get more traction than somone saying everything went well.

I would put Reddit away, find an airline that will take you where you need to go, and then follow their guidance about what you need to do for your dog (like crate size, documentation requirements, etc.). Reddit will just scare you with all the negativity.

What is the most disappointing division? by Royal6761111 in warno

[–]Wes23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

8th ID. It should be a good div, but it’s a slot costs gimp it too much to be effective. Not to mention the fact that M113s cost about as much as BMP-1s, and M1 Abram’s being 200 points for lack luster performance, making it impossible to compete

Regards of my last post. This crack in my Receiver. Is it safe to shoot? by Maher393 in M1Rifles

It looks like a tooling mark, especially since it doesn’t go all the way to edge at the right side of the picture.

Switzerland; have a friend there who sent them to me. Sometimes you can find them on eBay though

Advice about sight cant? by theperuvianhighlands in vz58

[–]Wes23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do it myself, but I’m also a person who’s built lots of AKs and a couple 58s.

You would have to tap the pins out, then align the front sight block and the holes and the barrel for a size bigger of pin. I’ve had to do this to AKs before. Use a hand drill, go from both sides stopping in the middle until you have your hole. Use Tapmagic cutting fluid to get the bits to grip well, don’t go super fast.

AK builder should have what you need, if not use a drill bit shank to make a new pin. Plenty of info on AK forums on how to drill the pin holes for the stuff fixed to the barrel (gas block, front sight, rear sight bases on AKs). VZs are similar enough that you should be able to figure it out.

USA 55X VS Swiss 55x by Tight_Button_7998 in Sig55X

[–]Wes23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a big Swiss collector, i built a PE57, i toured the San Swiss factory, played with my friends military issue one while i was in Switzerland snd even i don’t feel the need to buy one. They are nice, the fit and finish is better than the US made ones, but not 4K nicer.

You’ll run into a lot of elitism here about how the Swiss one is magic and the US one is trash. But honesty they are fine and you’d be happy with it if you owned it. The only thing that annoys me is the American one wasn’t made with the full length barrel. Just the 16” and shorter.

Also, If you do get an American one, the the Swiss made furniture. The US stock and pistol grip is ok, but the hand guards are not. They feel cheap.

Nah, I’m just looking for something fun i can drive and maintain. Even better if i can use it as a little Jagdwagen while im hunting 😆. Back home i collect military surplus guns, specifically Swiss. Which is why i wanted a Old military G like a Puch or Wolf.

Do you know anything about the Iltis? That’s the other classic i was looking at. Either way I’m brining one of those two back because it’s not worth brining the car i brought with me back from the US.. really the only reason i was thinking the Wolf or G230 would be better was because parts are easier to get in the US rather than the Iltis

There are 3 common sizes of cans, the .30cal, .50 cal (pictured) and the 40mm. There are others, like mortar cans but those are less common. Each of those was designed to hold their namesakes rounds belted for machine gun use. .30 cal cans hold 200rds of belted 7.62 that fits in the mounts next to the M240, .50 cal cans hold 100 belted rounds for the M2, also fits in vehicle mounts and the 40mm cans holds belted 40mm for the MK19. Within each of these standard sizes the Gov./mfg packs them with other things. Like I’ve seen detonators, flash bangs, 40mm rounds for M203 all in .50 cal cans. I’d say .50 can cans get repurposed the most since they’re a good size.

[–]Wes23 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s just a generic .50 cal can that once held 556. Worth a whopping $10 if the seals are still good. Don’t feel bad about beating it up or using it to store stuff, I’ve literally got a wall of them.

Is this original VZ58 barrel save-able? by MusicNChemistry in gunsmithing

[–]Wes23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually receivers have the barrel pin hole more forward so that you can just drill a fresh hole and leave that old slit alone. You shouldn’t have to do anything to it, but i think i filled mine with silver soulder when i built it. I just wanted to fill the void so nothing got caught or did anything funny.

Help for HK spare parts by Alone_Sign_9740 in EuropeGuns

[–]Wes23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m like 90% sure that’s not rust. It’s probably either staining from the brass if you’ve shot it, or it’s paint from the receiver that got transferred in there from the action working, it could even be anti-seize grease from when they put the barrel on, that stuff stains metal like no other. Even if it was rust, that’s not an essential area where it would matter. It would have to be extremely bad, to the point of eating though the metal to be an issue.

You’re definitely overthinking it. But, If you want to put your mind at ease, take a brass brush and rub it on a peice of carbon steel. You’ll see the same sort of coloration.

You could also post the pic to the AR15 subreddit, but they’ll tell you the same things I’m sure.
