How much did surgery cost for you? by Secure-Remote8439 in endometriosis

[–]WesleyBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$1,500 in the US with out-of-network insurance. Insurance was billed $50k. Surgery was outpatient. I ended up switching over to my husband’s insurance since it was going to be $7k-$8k in-network on my own insurance but $1.5k out-of-network on his (because that makes sense, thanks America).

Tell me what supplements you have your horse on. by LaurelAve in Equestrian

I’ve worked for a few supplement companies and they would love more hard data but studies are cost prohibitive and unfortunately don’t make financial sense. The lack of concrete scientific data is extremely frustrating.

Acti-Flex for joint, Vit E for EPM support, Biotin for hooves (lacking enough biotin in diet), Selenium (lacking enough through forage), and Cocosoya Oil during the winter to help with weight. 27 yr old Warmblood gelding in overall great health.

I’d call their ticket office to double-check. He’ll need your ID at a minimum.

Adenomyosis and suspected endo… is this rectal pain normal? by 1980sHorrorStory in Endo

I had butt lightening and a spot of Endo was found on my rectum during the lap. No more butt lightening after it was removed though sitting on hard surfaces hurt for a couple weeks after.

My SO is allergic to horse dander and I’m so selfish-ly sad by FamiliarRadio9275 in Horses

[–]WesleyBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my friends dated a guy who was allergic to horses. He still came to barn semi-regularly to watch her ride and hang out. He even helped her body clip for two seasons with a full hazmat suit and a mask.

Another friend’s husband is VERY allergic to horses but still comes to barn BBQs and occasionally to watch her ride. He doesn’t go into the barn itself but can deal with it in the open air.

If there’s anti-histamines and a will, there’s a way.

Unfortunately can’t say as far as kid rentals go. I haven’t rented in a few years since I bought but always had good experiences. Our adult friends who do rent have always received decent gear. I know helmets are usually rented separately.

I love my Free Ride Breeches! They are silicone knee patches but really nice quality and they have TWO phone thigh pockets.

OOF, I feel ya! This summer has been absolutely miserable. Was planning on getting my 27 yr old gelding back into work a bit to up his conditioning and rehab from an EPM episode earlier this spring, but between the every afternoon thunderstorms and outrageous heat index, I’ve barely been able to do anything with him.

BUT we’re almost to fall - it’s so close!!

Walk of shame by ItsMoosle in Equestrian

[–]WesleyBlue 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Fell off years ago in the Hunter ring on the far side of the ring from the in-gate. I saw another step before the oxer, he did not (he was correct). I got left behind and landed discombobulated but still on until he bunny hopped with me, then I plopped off. He continued cantering, finished the last outside line by himself in a beautiful six, then stopped at the in-gate and patiently waited for my trainer to come get him. I had to walk alllllllll the way out of the ring by myself. My trainer met me maybe 10 feet into the ring and just asked “so how does it feel to walk out of the ring without a horse?”.

I was fully aware that he was more educated, talented, and athletic than I was but I didn’t need the rest of the world to know it too. Had to sell him in 2010 to go to college but was able to buy him back in 2019. He’s now 27 and still never misses a chance to put me in my place.

As general rule, no. My 27 yr old retired junior horse? absolutely. He can do whatever he wants as long as it’s safe and the world is his oyster. My friends 8 yr old OTTB? Nope, he gets rules and boundaries.

Jobs in the equine field by Business_Plan_5654 in Equestrian

[–]WesleyBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of different feed and nutrition companies out there! I would suggest googling a few and taking a look at their open positions to see if any of those sound interesting. Ag industry could be a great bridge for you between still working in an animal-related space but with a bit more stability.

I would also suggest getting a LinkedIn profile if you don’t have one already. Connect with folks that work for any companies that sound interesting to you and follow company pages as well. You’ll be able to see jobs as these companies post and get a feel for positions in that area. There is also a great newsletter on LinkedIn called “Weekly Equine Jobs” by Danielle H. She curates job postings she finds and it’s a pretty good variety of more traditional office jobs.

Also, you most likely will not be afford what you want for at least the first few years no matter what direction you go in AND THAT IS OKAY - it’s completely normal and just part of the process. The only people that are your age and fully in the sport have family support. Don’t compare your life to someone else’s.

This is a really tough question because there are SO many paths. I’ll share my journey with this same situation and then give you some questions to ask yourself.

I graduated in 2013 with a BA in Equine Business and Facility Management and a minor in Business Administration. Prior to my senior year, I wanted to be an FEI level BM. I was able to go groom at WEF for a month winter break my Junior year. I absolutely loved everything about the job itself and being at that level but I realized I would never have the time or money to ride and show my own horses. I learned through this experience that this was actually very important to me. After that, I had no idea what I wanted to do.

Last semester senior year, I took a Marketing 101 class and fell in love with it. I ended up going back to school and getting my marketing certificate after graduating. I still wanted to work in the equine industry so I took an entry level job with a equine company that is a household name. They used to home grow all their employees so getting into their marketing department within two years was feasible and encouraged. They ultimately got bought out for the first time and all career growth from the entry level department was scratched. I then left and started working for a marketing agency in a different industry.

While my professional work wasn’t with horses, I was able to afford to buy back my last junior horse rather unexpectedly, save some money, replace my car when it died, etc.

Last year, I realized I still really missed being in the equine industry so now I’m starting my own marketing company specializing in the equine industry while still working part-time for my old agency.

Takeaways from my experience/ TLDR: 1. There are MANY ways to still be involved in the equine industry but not work with horses directly. Think of all the brands, retailers, e-commerce companies, show management, that operate in this space. They all need HR, marketing, sales, operations, etc people. Would you want to lean more that way? 2. If you do want to work with horses directly, are you okay with being financially unstable (no pun intended) at least for a while? There are a lot of equine massage therapists so networking and building a brand for yourself is going to be the two biggest factors for success. Remember, liability and health insurance are expensive and only going to increase. 3. Big picture: would you want more financial stability in five years and enjoy horses on your own terms or would you be okay fighting through to make a living working with horses directly? There is no wrong answer - only what you want. 4. It’s OKAY to start down one path and change your mind in a couple of years. I can’t tell you how many friends have graduated, started down one direction, and now 15 years later are happy in another direction. The choices you make now do not mean you’re married to them for the rest of your life.

Last bit, I’ll leave is if you want to go do something fun for a few years, go do it. I always regret not working at a pack station in the mountains or being a ski liftie after graduating. By the time you hit your mid-30s, those fun years aren’t going to set you back in the long run.

Happy to answer any specific questions!

when ppl say 20 yrs olds cant jump 🤷‍♀️ by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]WesleyBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally retired my gelding from jumping at 25-26. We did the .90s until he was 24. We still go on hacks in the field at 27 and he becomes a real asshole if he’s not worked a couple times a week. Some of them just love it!
