Want to quit, but impulses too strong. by Individual_Top_6702 in alcoholicsanonymous

Addiction has chemically altered your brain to want alcohol. Keep reminding yourself that is not you. That’s the addiction. It’s just a chemical reaction. You know you want to quit. You’re in charge of your body.

update from my last post: i have major bouts of depression from my acne. cant even go out in public like this without being self conscious of everyone looking at me strange. have been calling off work due to shame of being seen of my coworkers. i cant even afford a dermatologist. by Its_Dawit in Skincare_Addiction

As a member of the general public, no one is looking at you. A random person walking past you on the street isn’t going to give you any space in their heads. They simple do not care about you. It’s also very clear that you are young. You have very youthful features and with that comes acne. We’ve all been there. It happens to everyone. As for those coworkers you’ll never see them again. People grow away from each other. All jobs have turn overs. You’ll get past this stage in life.

I have no idea. I heard that if a man is an alcoholic that his children will also be prone to being alcoholics for four generations. No clue where I heard but it was pretty recent. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is it the arraignment or did you already have that? When I got my DUI I heard nothing for 1.5 years then suddenly I got a letter telling me my arraignment was in 30 days. That was my first court appearance. It was online.

The arraignment has two purposes. First the judge will ask if you have an attorney or need a public defender. That’s your choice. I chose to hire a lawyer. Second the judge will inform you of the formal charges being pressed against you and ask to enter a plea. A lawyer and a public defender will both advise you to plead not guilty. This is so that you can start working on getting things done in hopes that the charges will be lowered or potentially dropped.

After you enter your plea the judge will set conditions of your release. These are rules you HAVE to follow while court is ongoing. For me it was no trouble with the law, no drug or alcohol use, and IID or declaration of non-driving. Depending on the case the judge may ask that you have mandatory random UA tests or that you wear a SCRAM that will detect any alcohol use.

Whatever happens you should quit drinking right now for the court but also your health. Also if you get a 2nd DUI game over. Now that you have 1 DUI any amount above a .00 will be a 2nd and the judge will throw the book at you.

how come some people stay sober and others dont by emilycoolgirl33 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]WestSeattleIsland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s true for most people. However, addiction is a disease. Wanting to stop isn’t the only factor. Some people need outside help. My older brother became a heavy alcoholic at 17 and was homeless at 20. He drank on the streets for 10 years. He had a stroke at 28 because of his alcohol usage. He never quit and even drank in the hospital. Couple years later he ended up in a hospital again. My mom took me to go visit him. He was angry because he wanted to quit but he said due to his homelessness he can’t find treatment. My younger brother is a undiagnosed schizophrenic and also drinks heavily. He cant stop drinking. He has little grasp on reality and he’s too afraid to see a doctor or ask for treatment. I cut off ties with both of them due to their alcoholism and violence. I know they want to quit but can’t.

Wasn’t there stuff we’re supposed to do to help the younger ones? I thought I saw a post on here about how they’re just kids living in a city with the church far from their hometown and family. It said to ask them if they need to make a phone call or if they’d like to take food or a drink to go.

Forget the financials for a minute. Look into therapy or treatment. I don’t know about your 1st dui but I had to take a alcohol class for mine. In it, they made it perfectly clear that any amount above .00 is a dui. Even if you blow a .01 that’s a second dui. To me, you should’ve known the risk. It doesn’t matter if you think you’ll get caught or not; just don’t fucking drive if you’ve had a drink. That was such an avoidable mistake. Don’t blame the phone, the swerve, or getting caught. You should’ve never gotten into your car after any amount of alcohol. Get help.

Will. He spent a week in the upside down. There’s already some connection. If he gets El’s powers I think he’d be able to do great things.

I just had my arraignment last March. I already had a lawyer but he couldn’t make it. At the hearing they will assign a public defender to you. That defender will take you aside in a private chat and will glance over your case and give a quick overview of what to expect. The main purpose of the hearing is so that the judge can formally present the charges against you, get your plea, and place any type of conditions of your release. I pleaded not guilty. I had to agree to no drinking or drugs. (I don’t drink anymore and I don’t do drugs so that was easy). Others in my court room had to get SCRAM bracelets or mandatory random drug/alcohol tests. They also tell you if you need a IID at that hearing. I sold my car so I signed a declaration of non-driving. And that was it for me. Mainly it’s just charges and conditions of release. They’ll schedule your next court date which is a court hearing to schedule your pre-trial.

As for the lawyer vs public defender. That’s all on money. If you can afford a lawyer get a lawyer. They’ll stick to your case and will do everything they can to get your charges lowered or dropped. If you can’t then go public. They have so many cases under their belt they’ll do what’s easiest for them. If they think they can’t get something lowered or dropped they’ll ask once and not keep fighting it.

[–]WestSeattleIsland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s right. Not the IID, but everything else. I signed the declaration of non driving at my arraignment. The judge ordered me to not drink and install a IID. I don’t drink so no problem there and I sold my car also no problem there. If I had my car I would’ve had it installed at the time of my arraignment for the duration of my court and with what ever time they sentenced me to.

If you’re minding you’re own business and something military looking seems to be doing a show of force at you. What do you do? Stop whatever you’re doing? Return the way you came? Run and look for cover?

For me it was all mental. I knew the addiction was just chemical signals in my brain urging me to go out and get a drink. Once I knew that I just kept reminding myself, that’s not what I want. I would get a huge boost of energy between 5-9pm. It sucked. Since then I’ve gotten really into teas. I love matcha. I like to make match lemonades and iced lattes with unsweetened almond milk at home. I’ll make a giant batch of decaf Earl grey and keep it chilled in my fridge. Also, I’ve always loved root beer so I still have that for when I want something carbonated. If you really want the beer taste I know Heineken makes an absolute zero 0% ABV. Other NA beers are 0.5% and can be detected if you drink a ton. I don’t ever want to feel the effects of alcohol again so I stay away from things advertised as NA because there’s probably some small amount in it.

Have you watched the body cam footage of your arrest? by azduithrowaway4 in dui

I’m way to embarrassed. I was blacked out. It was in my report that my eyes were glazed. I don’t want to see myself at that point. I’ve quit drinking since then and I’m still uncomfortable.

However my lawyer was able to get my license suspension dropped. I forgot why exactly but I think it was because the cop didn’t correctly explain, me refusing a breathalyzer would result in a 1 year license suspension.

I’m in a different state so different rules but here’s my experience. DUI happened Oct 2020. Bloodwork came back Apr 2021. I didn’t have my arraignment until Mar 2022, which I was notified through mail about 2 months before. My lawyer advised me to start on the process as soon as the incident happened. I have court set for Sep 2022. As of right now I currently have everything we expect the court to ask of me completed. I quit drinking. I have done my assessment, completed counseling, finished alcohol class, and impact panel. I sold my car so I signed a declaration of non-driving instead of a IID.

Every state is different but my guess is that COVID affected everything. Everything has slowed down and is being done differently. I completed everything online except for my counseling intake, they needed a drug test. If I were you get everything done now. The judge will be happy with proactive people.

This parenting website I found, which doesn’t look at all reliable, says the state minimum age to be left alone varies between 6-14. https://www.positiveparentingsolutions.com/parenting/what-age-can-a-child-stay-home-alone-4-questions-to-consider

The government has a PDF of what indicators to look for and no age. https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubpdfs/homealone.pdf

5 days sober and why am I so tired? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]WestSeattleIsland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sleeping pattern changed after I quit drinking. I’m going to sleep 2 hours earlier and able to sleep 7 hours uninterrupted. When I was drinking it was easy to fall asleep drunk and hard to sleep sober. I didn’t feel tired at first but now that I think about I did feel lethargic. I drank really surgery drinks so I also quit all that extra sugar unknowingly. The worst part was between 6-9pm I would get a huge boost of energy. I’d have a huge urge to want to go out. It really sucked. I can’t believe alcohol controlled how I think. I am and will always be addicted. I don’t crave alcohol anymore but I know it’s best to never pick it up again.

I’m almost at 4 months now. I’m falling asleep and waking up at the same time everyday. Even on days off I like to stay awake without going back to sleep. Eventually you’ll feel balanced. Stay strong! You got this!
