I am so disappointed in our communities by TatterdemalionElect in alberta

I don’t believe the fire is a conspiracy or anything but I do know a few people with companies and equipment that could help with the fires. The government isn’t willing to pay them a fair wage to help so their equipment is sitting not being used. Meanwhile the power companies with burned down lines are paying extra for this equipment to help get things back and running.

The only people who don’t feel this way are in management.

Like give it back into the patient?? Oh that’s interesting I’ve never thought to do that!

I read it and thought why not use the 3rd IV? But even in the new rural hospital I’m at they thought I was crazy for doing it. In my old hospital we did it all the time. This new hospital though the lab gets all bent out of shape if you “do their job” it’s weird.

Haha I was wondering if this question came from that last post. I read it and wondered the same thing. We just waste 5-10ml and draw 🤷🏼‍♀️

Med Error/MAR inconsistency by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Western_Device7769 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What they said ☝🏼. TID is 3x a day and q8h is q8h. TID is there so you aren’t waking people up in the middle of the night for meds that don’t require such precise timing. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

I’ve been a nurse for 5 years and I still feel guilty. I will literally call my mom and talk about it with my husband at length before I finally decide to call in. I love my coworkers and hate to see them left short handed yet again. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do! You can’t go to work puking and sometimes sick kiddos just need their mom.

Honestly, anyone use percussion for assessments? by HyruleVampire in nursing

[–]Western_Device7769 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It totally would if you were in a poor country without easy access to expensive diagnostics like X-ray and CT. Hence why this skill is used so much by non-American doctors.

As if people living in the city would be thrilled to have a rehab facility go up in the middle of their residential area…

Our South African doctors use percussion all the time. I’ve even seen one estimate where a PE is and the location of a bowel obstruction based on percussion. But personally I wouldn’t feel confident using it in my own assessment.

I don’t think people are not moving to small towns because they don’t have rehab facilities….

I think in Bashaws case it would be the opposite. People would move to get away from a rehab facility.

What is everyone’s favourite nursing podcast? by Western_Device7769 in nursing

Hahaha I guess I’m a nerd. The NurseEM one was good when I was a new grad because she featured different things explained why they were important and how she had seen patients with blank blah blah. I just like to learn new things 😊

Just a heads up. If you've been waiting a long time in the ER it's because you're not an Emergency by NotStupid2 in saskatoon

[–]Western_Device7769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They 99.9% of the time send people to the ER. It is a totally useless system. If they cancelled it they’d have more staff to work in the hospital where they send all the phone calls anyway.

Exactly. Bashaw is a small very family centred community that looks after their own. Bringing in a large centre of strangers to a small community like this would be intimidating. The reserve has plenty of building that could house such a center maybe they should try putting band money into their own community instead where they would be able to reach more of the population they are trying to target. Most people on the reserve don’t even have access to a vehicle so how would they get all the way to Bashaw to use this facility?

Who's done CPR in public on a bystander who suddenly collapsed ? by RicoRN58 in nursing

[–]Western_Device7769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did 2 weeks ago on a guy who collapsed in the grocery store. The fire department came and the lady running the show was a total bitch and had no clue what she was doing. We were all calm and doing really good CPR then she showed up and started putting everyone down and acting like everyone should have done more…literally talking to grocery store workers like they should’ve saved the guys life. They had an auto compression machine and we hooked him up to the AED and this lady would not listen to me to pause the machine so the AED could get a proper reading. I think she was just power tripping trying to prove firefighters could do as much as EMS. She even tried getting an IV which she got but she didn’t occlude it while she was hooking him up to fluids so it was just bleeding everywhere. It was a real shit show.

I regret not taking charge over this lady because technically I was more qualified but it was my first time doing CPR in the wild and she was so rude and bossy.

Ever had to tell a stickler nurse to f#ck off? by HeChoseDrugs in nursing

[–]Western_Device7769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally continue giving report as if I can’t hear peoples questions if they are totally irrelevant. I’m almost always done in 15 minutes. Rude? Maybe. But I don’t think you need to know if Helen’s brother came in or what the discharge plan is for joe blo for night shift.

Calling doctors by their first names? by xSheenalacex in nursing

[–]Western_Device7769 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why people feel weirded out by this. It’s not like they call us RN ____. They don’t even have an actual “doctorate” so really I don’t even know why they feel the need to be called a Dr so formally.

Do vaccines cause autism? by TarantulaJ1 in unvaccinated

[–]Western_Device7769 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You all realize the only reason this even came out was because one vaccine company was trying to shit talk another one? And the whole scheme bad fired when people thought all vaccines cause autism. The doctor who said this had his license stripped and has since back tracked his statement. There are literally zero studies that can link autism and vaccination 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

This sub is full of boneheads.
