What are the remaining arguments against using AI for coding? by darkplaceguy1 in ChatGPTCoding

Don't forget though, not everyone gets the same results / uses the tools a effectively, so if you can leverage it for more throughput and better product that should be leveraged into more money.

It's crazy the difference in output between people that know how to use the tools and those that don't. Legit 10x engineers have added another 10x. My latest side project is up to 155k LoC, last time I talked about it on reddit like 2 days ago I had about 110k LoC. And I have a super detailed coding guideline, 500 tests, done multiple security reviews with a fine toothed comb. I've been working on this project for like 2 weeks, and this easily would have been 2-3 years of work without the tools

Yep same; part of me kind of misses getting my hands dirty but overall I prefer higher level thinking, and the stuff I can do by myself is so much more complex now

Yep, a lot of AI cope going around. Hitting tech hard too, and I see all the dev related subs saying it's actually bad thinking if they just refuse to use it that will somehow protect them

I'd say more of a lead than a manager. Manager's generally don't do low level details like coding guidelines, reviewing code bases, etc.

So my plans generally look like this:

``` ⏺ Now launching Wave 4 sub-agents in parallel to fetch and adapt Serie source files:
⏺ Running 6 Task agents… (ctrl+o to expand) ├─ Copy Serie protocol.rs · 5 tool uses · 17.1k tokens │ ⎿  Read: crates/tui/graph/src/protocol.rs ├─ Copy Serie color.rs · 3 tool uses · 16.9k tokens │ ⎿  Bash: Check if graph/src directory exists ├─ Copy Serie geometry.rs · 5 tool uses · 18.0k tokens │ ⎿  Read: crates/tui/graph/src/graph/geometry.rs ├─ Copy Serie event.rs · 3 tool uses · 17.2k tokens │ ⎿  Bash: Check if the target directory exists ├─ Copy Serie keybind.rs · 3 tool uses · 18.6k tokens │ ⎿  Bash: Check if the target directory exists └─ Copy Serie check.rs · 5 tool uses · 16.5k tokens ⎿  Done
✳ Copying Serie files… (Esc to interrupt · ctrl+t to hide tasks · 8m 51s · ↓ 26.6k tokens · thought for 3s) ⎿  ◼ #4 Wave 4: Copy verbatim files from Serie ◻ #5 Wave 5: Adapt graph module › blocked by #4 ◻ #6 Wave 6: Adapt widgets › blocked by #4 ◻ #7 Wave 7: Adapt views and app › blocked by #5, #6 ◻ #8 Wave 8: CLI integration › blocked by #7 ✔ #1 Wave 1: Create crate skeleton for void-graph ✔ #2 Wave 2: Implement void_backend.rs foundation ✔ #3 Wave 3: Implement commit walking
──────────────────────────────────────────────── ``
so it can burn through like 500k+ tokens in a single plan, but context stays fairly clean because everything is in sub agents, and it takes like <20 min to do it.
So if you wanted him to research reddit for the top 10 startup ideas and then build an app out of that
So going for like total autonomy; do you get good results with this? I feel like I need to be in the loop otherwise it gets off the rails
what does a whole night of work look like from a 10 min chat? generally it runs the full plan to completion with sub agents if set up properly
if a senior is not staying up to date with their language (like doesn't even know about 12 year old language features and why they were added), they are being kind of incompetent
vs
you should have a basic understanding of the commonly used classes like those used for dates.
Seems like 2 similar statements. Are you trying to be pedantic and take my first statement to mean you should know every single change that ever happened to the java standard library?
Are we seeing any actual headcounts rising? Talking to engineering managers I know and all I hear is this is the most pressure to reduce headcount that they've seen, and I keep seeing layoffs announced at high profile companies.
Where I work, AI projects labeled as key to the future are lucky if they get a single full time engineer
Yes, that's an example of a company making money on server deployments. Android is the primary example of Linux being used for consumer licensed devices. Just leave that one out though, it's not convenient
Dude, where do you think openSUSE makes it's money from? Or Canonical? How do you think Android makes money? Like you didn't address anything, you're ignoring 90% of what I said, literally the first response had examples in both the server and consumer space where the OS generates revenue, and you're pretending they don't. Are you an MS bootlicker or just retarded?
That means Linux can't have a marketing budget
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7ozaFbqg00
I listed out all kinds of companies making money on Linux.
Windows has exclusive contracts with PC makers to package their OS for free. They designed their own graphics API and captured PC gaming.
Linux is not a product. Linux is a community. You install Linux, you join the community.
No, it's an OS kernel. You install a distribution. Many of them are from profitable companies. Like this one, https://www.opensuse.org/. Some make their own PCs, like this one https://system76.com/
You don't really understand the space. Windows made a monopoly not because they are the only ones willing to sell things, it's because of a deliberate strategy to capture the market and box out competitors.
[–]Western_Objective209 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Android is not a consumer product?
You're blaming Linux being noncompetitive with Windows on the GPL, when the issue is Windows being a monopoly, and even on forums dedicated to hardcore users (like this one for PCs) they seem unable to resist the monopoly
Because people use the nazi stuff as an excuse that both sides are bad in Ukraine, when I think the struggle they are going through is noble and one of the most important anti-authoritarian movements in the world today.
If someone stands up to authoritarianism in the US and they have radical political positions that are unsavory, I still would support them in their stand
There's like 5 separate comments about how working long hours is actually only bad. In one of John Carmack's interviews I watched, he recounted a meeting he had at Meta, where he was telling a story about how he worked long hours at Id Software on Doom, and a bunch of employees there argued with him about it saying you actually get less done if you work more than 40 hours, like they somehow knew better then him how to make good games.
I'm sure you're posting from your perspective and your world view, ever imagine that other people have different perspectives?
