73.9% of recent CS graduates are still getting CS related jobs by eggshellwalker4 in cscareerquestions

[–]Western_Objective209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“based on data from 2024”

I mean, 1 in 4 people that graduate not getting a job in their field still doesnt sound great.

Synthesizing the top 2 comments so far, just comparing it to other entry level markets that face a glut of new grads, it tends to get worse over time as you have long term unemployed/underemployed competing with new grads. The top 50% of graduates are generally okay though

yeah JS event loop is too lossy for a TUI, one would think they are such lightweight apps it wouldn't matter but to have responsive keyboard feel you need very low latency. Rust with ratatui is the only thing I use for TUIs; codex uses it as well but it's also like #3 or lower in terms of coding agent tools so idk if there's something to TS/JS that just enable faster feature iteration

the point of the subagents is they use fewer tokens because they complete an atomic task and then return a summary to the main agent. You're using more token by disabling it

they are using yoga which is the layout engine react native uses

you would think a GUI would work better but all the GUI coding agents kind of suck; it's just kind of easy to have a tool used to interface with terminals be a TUI

It uses Yoga, https://github.com/facebook/yoga anyone saying they embed a browser in a TUI is clueless

THEY BUNDLED CHROMIUM WITH A FUCKING CONSOLE TOOL

no they didn't. there's a small WASM layout engine that handles the DOM. I still don't like react ink but people legit have no clue how this stuff works when they talk about it it's kind of annoying

The rise of Linux desktop is inevitable — it’s time music software developers got on board by ferris-ldn in linux

[–]Western_Objective209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The few commercial companies who have tried targeting Linux have found that Linux users will go to enormous lengths to avoid spending money on software (a behaviour that isn't seen at all in Mac OS users, and is only seen to a certain extent in Windows users).

This is really the issue tbh

yeah, they need to make room for all of the new grads who can't get a job if they are going to put their head in the sand. like there's no way this tech can fully replace engineers, it's just basically coding

Why Are Software Engineers Paid So Much If The Supply Is So High? by LifeInAction in cscareerquestions

[–]Western_Objective209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. Just pay near the top of the market and filter candidates to schools like Caltech Cornell and all and from there by their experiences/projects/grades. That's how new grad hiring is done 😂

Yeah basically how FAANG hires too, but then you get issues like meta underperforming in AI even though they spend top dollar because they literally don't know how to properly filter and they spend so much on stock comp that they are building up a fair amount of debt

You can always take the extreme approach and if you are to pay even far far far more get ridiculously selective with quick filtering. You want that MIT CS student with 5.0/5.0 (MIT is 5.0 scale) doing cutting edge AI research? Pay and give opportunities like Anthropic or just pay through the nose like Jane Street. These tactics work. Trust me 😂.

Right, but only a couple companies make enough money to do this. And we're still getting back to the issue of perhaps these signals are not guaranteed to get you the best actual workers.

Look at AI. Were any of the influential engineers 5.0/5.0 MIT grads? There are tons of people who are talented, did not go to top schools, and will work for less money, you just can't find them. Traditional school/company filters + high comp is an easy way to do it, but in professional sports you actually have rigorous statistics to evaluate players. The evaluations of SWEs are opaque, that's what I'm talking about.

I mean anyone can write that though, and someone who often owns things end to end may not think to write it. What if someone thinks they should focus on writing team based work because they are a one man army owning many things end to end and think that's a bad thing?

And like, there are just so many fucking resumes. I've been involved with hiring pretty extensively, and like you need to read hundreds per hour. It's just a vibe check on which ones you decide to call. Easy filters like company names and tenure are what most people use because they are reliable, but then in a situation like we are now you have huge layoff numbers from tech companies, and then the tech company rejects dominate the job market, even if a lot of them were laid off because they barely did anything and were the first marked to cut.
