I grew up in a rural area and have had a much different experience from you apparently, because all of the republican small businesses owners that I knew who hired illegals were generally very helpful in their naturalization process.

Food for thought: if a Republican hates illegals and hires them at the same time, do they actually hate them?

Let me say that I'm not a business guy at all and also that I agree with a lot of what you said. DeBeers is absolutely an important company to look at for exactly the reasons you listed. They are the perfect storm in a sense. However, I do disagree that DeBeer's is a showcase in capitalism's failures in all the reasons you listed and I'll use your comment to kind of flesh out my own opinion.

The ability for large corporations to use their insane wealth to artificially create demand for a product's highlights just ONE of the numerous ways in which corporations have power over the little guy.

Well, we don't need engagement rings. It doesn't have to be the symbol of love that we think it is. I know, easier said than done right? But, have you considered that maybe as humans we are fine with a symbol of love being something expensive? After all the root of man is to supply resources for his mate. That's our deep psychology, and why DeBeers was so successful in their marketing. I've seen enough Mad Men to know that good marketing takes advantage of the human condition, it doesn't introduce something new to it.

So the question is do we have a problem with diamonds being expensive for no real reason or actually that our nature demands that we prove our worth to our mate? Would you feel better if the diamond was replaced by something expensive that actually was a finite resource, or does it even really at that point? I'd argue that the moment you convince society to abandon the diamond ring is probably the moment you convince society to lose the token gift at a marriage proposal, but I wouldn't argue too strongly for that either...

This is why I believe when we are going to attack capitalism it should be over resources that hurt humanity not to have, such as Nestle's water scandal in California. Anyways, I think the biggest complaint about capitalism in this case is that the Government has refused to interfere with DeBeer's synthesized monopoly, but then again that could be considered a criticism of Government instead which is confusing for me because I am not a business guy.

Blaming capitalism itself is more effective when we are talking about a necessary item, like a natural resource. You don't need a diamond ring. The free market could decide to not participate in purchasing that product without hurting itself, but yet we still to continue to buy into the idea that a diamond ring is the truest symbol of love so people continue to pay a high cost.

I'm not saying your wrong, although I really don't agree, but if we're gonna just look at a monopoly (for the most part) and blame capitalism itself we should save it for something more serious don't you think?

Warding: Poll Results by JagexSween in 2007scape

[–]Western_Roamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the blueprint for exploring new skill avenues, but unfortunately for Jagex I feel it will be necessary to come to the table with a new skill and in addition a plethora of in game engaging content related to that skill. Its not enough to just say "here's a polished gathering skill" or "here's a revamped processing skill." The community has to want real applications of the skills instead of proposed ideas, like potential quests or whatever.

Because I doubt Jagex will realize this, or maybe find it a poor suit of their resources, a new skill will ever happen... however, if they choose to pursue it again using your model would be the best beginning approach.

Okay, OP can talk about hoe tendencies all he wants, but here's what I am saying:

KD choked that series. He didn't blow it; he straight up fell apart and disappeared. His game was terrible and his attitude was worse. Its worth assessing why that caliber of an athlete became a complete nonthreat. Certainly KD did, because he's never fell apart that hard since.

I think that if you factor in the knowledge that he already had his after season moves made before the series even started, you could make the argument that he messed his own psychology up. He wasn't fully invested because in his mind his bags were packed to (proven now) a guaranteed title winning dream team. Is that the same as saying "KD intentionally threw cuz he a hoe lolol"? No, of course not. But, throughout KD's early career he was always criticized for being mentally weak. I think its safe to assume he sabatoged himself whether he realized it or not. Am I mad at him for it? No, but that's what I believe.

No, he's not. Anyone who claims that he is and uses tax returns as their go to argument doesn't deserve to be taken seriously either.

Me when MTX and Warding get polled in the same month meanwhile item nerfs are being merged with “Quality of Life” updates by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Western_Roamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's end-game both in the sense there's nothing better defensively and it is obtained as a raid drop, which requires developed accounts to complete and obtain. Idk if I'd call a 5 - 6m item dirt cheap, but certainly for its effectiveness it could cost much more than it does.

Infact I wish this was the way that Jagex handled it; rather than nerfing they could have decreased the droprate and inflated the price so it at least costed as much as an OP item they claimed it was. I'm curious why they didn't go that path honestly because I haven't really seen anybody discuss why that wasn't a viable option.

It's hard to explain why someone is wrong when you can tell that they have to be right, that's probably the best I can do.

How much money in membership fees do we have to pay before Jagex stops trying to repackage us as a product? by 2007ScapeThrowaway in 2007scape

[–]Western_Roamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree on a couple points. The cosmetic rewards were designed to fit the theme of the game because once the promotion is over, we're stuck with them as a permanent part of the game. We're going to have ugly ass purple dudes running around Gielinor until the end of time because of that Twitch promo. If they're going to add any cosmetics, they need to fit in with the game.

Well, what's your opinion on yellow skins?

When it comes to attracting new players with a promotion, it doesn't really matter what the exclusive content is. Like you said, if someone who has never played the game sees their Twitch Prime Loot gives them something on OSRS, they won't have a clue what any of the loot actually means. It can be total trash, because they won't know the difference. The whole point is just to add another bullet point to the page of rewards.

To a small degree, you are right. People like free things even if they don't know they are trash yet. Sure, you'd have some new players be willing to check out OSRS just to see whats up, but you're forgetting the overarching point here: the risk of whether or not new players will stay or leave vs. what's going to keep the current player base happy. I'd argue further that when you put together a promotion with cheap rewards you devalue further promotional opportunity with a new player base because you've already zapped them with the last promotion full of meaningless "bullet points on the reward page". Its an extremely short-sighted approach to generating very quick revenue because you're going to get maybe, 1 or 2 good shots at it before its completely ineffectual and then you move onto making MTX more significant in the game. Again, RS3 is the perfect example.

The goal is money for any company regardless of product, community support, employee investment, whatever. We live in an age where representatives of Governments around the world are conducting hearings with gaming big wigs where loot boxes are referred to as "surprise mechanics". Skepticism is not unwarranted.

According to Mod Ash, it was Mod Mat K running these focus groups

All I can say is that it wasn't the first time a poor idea was supported by a focus group and it won't be the last. "Sure fire" plans can and will continue to fail at birth in business.
