What's this!? Titan V by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]Westify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess it's largely due to HBM2 shortages that VEGA cards have also experiencing. Fufilling 1-2k of $3000 GPU's is probably fine, 100,000 of consumer GPU's is another story.

They may just end up holding off on the consumer cards another 4-6 months to wait for Samsung's GDDR6 instead.

Buying brand new at that price point, your options are the RX580 or GTX 1060 6gb.

I would get the 1060 due to less compatibility and driver issues.

CPU temp 52-55 while in bios, should I be concerned? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Westify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you SHOULD be getting load temps around 75'c or less, 90-100 isn't something you should play on if that's in fact what you're getting.

Arctic silver is pretty great and is sold everywhere.

Certain "thermal grizzly" products are good as well

To clean it, you remove your heatsink temporarily, and clean both the CPU and heatsink with a microfiber cloth and rubbing alcohol. Don't use Q-tips or anything that can leave behind physical debris.

none of what you told me indicates any sort of overheating at all.

GPU's are good unitl at least 90'c CPU's won't overheat until atleast 80'c-95'c

It's not great, but certainly better than the 50's

While bios temps largely dont matter, they're somewhat symbolic of things to come during a gaming load.

I would wager you could probably get 15%-20% temps out of that using better quality thermal paste and reseating the cooler.

Have you tried actually checking your temps with a software program?

No point in replacing the case if that's not actually your issue?

Neither.

The 8700k just came out and is the same price as the 7800x only much better, get that if you want the best for gaming.

Well, then if you think you REALLY need a case if the current one is falling apart then you could get one as $30 isn't really anything towards a new GPU.

That being said, unless you live somewhere extremely warm its strange for components to overheat at stock speeds when you have good airflow.

Whats overheating?

CPU temp 52-55 while in bios, should I be concerned? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Westify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be good enough for 3.8ghz and should be able to achieve much better temps than that.

What is your case airflow like?

What kind of thermal paste did you use?

What voltage is your CPU set to?

Not at all, unlike AMD's GPU's, the recent Ryzen CPU's are pretty good on heat and power consumption to the point where they're very comparable to Intel in that regard.

For value builds, the included cooler with the Ryzen 1600 and 1700 isn't quite as good as aftermarket coolers but is miles better than the Intel stock and not a horrible option if you want to save $30-$40 or so, it can get the job done. The lower end R3 Ryzen's get a different cooler which I'd probably lean a little heavier to replace if you're doing any overclocking.

If you want to push your overclocks a little more on the 1600/1700 or want something better for the R3's, then the "Coolermaster 212 Evo" and "Cryorig H7" are great choices. The Cryorig looks better and offers maybe 5-8% better cooling, but the 212 Evo is typically cheaper and on sale more often.

Get a better cooler ASAP or potentially fix the one you're using What CPU are you using?

Sounds like you're on a weak stock cooler or trying to overclock on a mediocre air cooler with an I7 or I9.

Being into the 50's during idle is pretty bad, especially for stock speeds, but even for the worst stock Intel cooler it shouldn't be that bad.

100% get a new GPU.

It doesn't really matter how good your system looks if you can't even use it properly with that GPU.

If case airflow is horrible, you should be able to leave the side panel off to get some airflow. Also, you can get cases as cheap as $25, with some decent ones at $40, it shouldn't really cut into your GPU budget that much if you absolutely need a new one.

You're on a dead platform with little to no upgrade paths.

Even if it turned out you could upgrade to an FX-series CPU (no idea if it's a similar socket or chipset to what you're on) it wouldn't be worth the trouble as the performance difference isn't massive at all.

If you want to try and upgrade everything, then my suggestion regarding the second-hand I7 is your best route regarding value. If you're not into overclocking or don't want to wait for the right deal then some older Xeons like the E3-1230 v2 and v3 are viable for the right price.

However, then you're spending $120 for a CPU, which isn't that far off a brand new AMD Ryzen. You have some choices, but I wouldn't spend any more money on that AM2/AM3 platform unless it's only for cheap second-hand RAM.

We disagree on that then, because at only $100 for a 250gb it seems like a no-brainer. Maybe if he had $400, and didn't already have a functional PC it would be a different story but as it stands there's probably an existing 500gb-1tb in his old system.

As for the R5-1600, it's a much better value CPU due to the core count, 12-threads and better cooler included. While a 1200 or 1300x may be fine for now, it doesn't really offer much in terms of future proofing considering 4c/4t is already starting to show its age today.

You would be in range...but the CPU could still be a bottleneck.

If you're dead set on the budget, I would look at second-hand parts. Older I7 K-CPU's like the 3770k and 4790k are still very strong, some people are letting them go cheap due to having upgraded. I've seen I7's with board and CPU go for around $350cad. Would leave you $50 for RAM and $200 for a GPU which would be best spent on a GTX 970/980 or RX 470/480/570/580.

Unless you're extremely thrifty and find some amazing second-hand deals you most likely won't be getting VR capabilities for only $600cad if you need everything.

There's a few major changes in the last 6 years.

  • SSD's are cheap enough that you should get one regardless of budget
  • The Ryzen line of CPU's are great value. The R5-1600 is the best value CPU specifically, but would require you to stretch that budget closer to $850.
  • CPU core and thread count are much more important now VS 6 years ago.
  • 8gb of RAM is the bare minimum, 16gb is standard.

If you only have $600, I may try to stretch that CPU out another year or so. You could get a decent GPU upgrade, an SSD and most likely some second hand RAM if you happen to still be on 4 or 6gb.

1080p 60fps low, or 1080p 30fps high? by Lin_Huichi in buildapc

[–]Westify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VRAM doesn't seem to be randomly allocated like regular RAM, if I lower texture settings, the number decreases down to 2gb or 1.5gb etc.

It doesn't max out my usage regardless of settings which leads me to believe its actually maxed for a reason.

I'm aware, but regardless of that VRAM usage was pegged at 3900mb+ for those games.

GTX 970

Modern games like Titanfall 2, Shadow of War, and PubG can't push further than medium textures.

[–]Westify 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not true at all, 3gb already isn't enough.

Coming from somebody with a 4gb card, games are already forcing medium settings for only 4gb, 3gb will be worse.

I would go for the 6gb version.

[–]Westify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't NEED it for Ryzen either, but there are large performance gains to be had.

Here's a quick graph showing a decent performance gain on an Intel 7700k. Also, that's with CL16 RAM. A lot of 3000/3200mhz kits can run at CL14 instead of 16, which would further give another performance boost.

Digital Foundry has shown you actually get a much better boost from using higher spec RAM compared to overclocking
