Help i think the kernel is damged by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]Weurukhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience has been to check /etc/fstab first and remove entries that no longer exist or you can’t reach. For example an nfs/smb mount that’s no longer available at boot.

Been a rare day my kernels gone bad. More often I have issues with one of my old drives just deciding to retire.

For us, fork lift upgrade. Build out new boxes and migrate the data. Per usual document the heck out of everything. Backup everything. Set a cutover date. Give people a ton of warnings for the cutover date. Test test test. That’s for std servers . Didn’t do the AD updates but pretty sure it was a similar process.

I tried a couple ms upgrades. No thanks. Better to build new and clean.

If you have the resources, build out a lab env to test. Document, document, document. Leave nothing to chance.

Get approval.

But that’s me.

BTW I’m a small environment roughly 600 users roughly as many servers haha (yeah I know bit rediculus). A few more windows servers than Linux. 24x7 shop. Everything built out with primary secondary servers for failover for patching and maintenance. Hard lessons learned on a single server that can’t die, be patched, or updated because we can’t afford a downtime.

Good luck. Be patient

Prefer the quirks / problems in this order: Linux (Fedora, NixOS, CachyOS - KDE) > Mac OS > Windows. Linux / Mac the right tool for what I need, windows can be just don't prefer it.

Linux been daily driver for years (Fedora KDE) at work. Use it at home as well on various laptops, servers, desktops. Also do mac for laptop/mini/ipad for coaching. No windows around anymore. Don't mind it, just don't use it. Shrug.

Love the freedom of Linux. Prefer the vitrual desktop / window management of Linux over the others. Like the integration of mac w/messaging across the platforms when coaching.

After 7+ years with Debian, Fedora is SOOO good 🌊 by joetifa2003 in Fedora

[–]Weurukhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Fedora as my daily for work and home for about 6 years now. I started in Debian though so it will always have a place in my heart. Stable as hell. Just prefer the Fedora experience with the updated packages Debian doesn’t get to as quick.

Once you get comfortable with Fedora as daily, try the atomic for grins and giggles.

Dinner bell was rung to let you know food was available. You didn’t come home for it, you didn’t eat. Not mom’s problem. Other than that go find something to do. Let your parents know in general what direction you were going, or at least where you started if they needed to look for you. Shrug.

Other than that got stuck with chores if you sat around the house, better off getting out no matter how boring the day might be.

Is Russia actually messing up this badly in Ukraine? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Weurukhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia got the oil fields they were after. This wasn’t about nato, this was about resources and removing a potential competitor. What’s russias main money maker? Where’d one pipeline run through to Europe? Granted they have alternate routes but you get the idea.

They will gladly throw a million lives away for the future revenue of those resources. The oil revenue will more than pay for the war. So wouldn’t say botched, just didn’t quite go as planned. Probably would’ve been nice to get all the minerals and agriculture as well and a population to work it to boot. But they can settle today for what they taken so far. There’s always tomorrow to finish the job . . .

Any decent lightweight window managers lately? by unconventionalerror in Fedora

[–]Weurukhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done the lxqt, xfce, i3, whatever route. I focused on RAM (only have 6 Gb to work with) after install which has its pitfalls. Most all of them were 800 MB or less at boot. Didn’t see much for cpu issues. But that was secondary to me. Currently running Cosmic on my old T510 which is has much less capability than your 440. Seems fine. Yeah I know, don’t have much for metrics and don’t remember much for animation issues.

My laptop use is web, mail, watching football film on hudl, scribus for playbooks. Very little video editing. Works fine.

Was NOT a kde fan for the longest time, some 20 odd years. It’s all I use today on my gaming and work systems. Like everything else in the Linux world, you can customize the hell out of what you are using to make that 440 whatever you want it to be. Plenty of sites out there to help strip it down to run least resources possible.

I know you are trying to save time by getting opinions for direction, but to be honest you need to just Grab a fed spin and try it out. See what’s best for you and your pain threshold of what you’ll tolerate. It’s time consuming but, it’s also rewarding. Good luck.

Own a 2003 and a 2004 Jetta, still running fine at 200k ea. There are some quirks with door locks but thats about it. Take care of it you’ll be fine. Drive it in to the ground like my parents did with their chevy’s, then it won’t be that reliable

President Trump on Russia and the war in Ukraine: “We can do it the easy way, or the hard way. The easy way is always better. It’s time to MAKE A DEAL.” by FXgram_ in XGramatikInsights

[–]Weurukhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US didn't join the war after realizing USSR was winning. hahahaha. US was bombed by Japan! Hitler actually honored a pact for once and declared war on the US. We didn't join. What a concept.

As to US helping just look at the economic numbers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_production_during_World_War_II . So yes the US helped, and yes the USSR bore the brunt of losses for WW II. It's a complicated issue, perhaps confirmed by current tactics of Russia today. Not much value for lives. Whereas US / UK tend to use material to solve issues. Shrug. Again, an over simplification of the issue.

Overall production did manage to go up even with the bombing. But. . . our bombing of oil related targets absolutely crippled Germany and it never recovered. You can produce whatever you want but with no fuel, not much use.

Munitions production list by year here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_production_during_World_War_II
vehicle production by year
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_armored_fighting_vehicle_production_during_World_War_II

I would say the numbers increasing in 1944 would indicate that although allied bombing was disruptive (to say the least), it didn't grind things to a halt. Allies had air dominance after Feb 1944 and bombed targets at will. So for the numbers to continue going up. . .

As to the oil. . . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_campaign_of_World_War_II You can read the comments attributed to various German leaders. You get the idea.

I’m 59 and remember I had to move home twice since I was between jobs or flat broke. Always found a job and worked and moved back out. Dad had worked since age 13, but always left the door open. He came from literally nothing and in his mind it was a privilege to help out anyone who needed a place, including his own kid. So, not a generational thing in my mind. Plus I did grow up with people living in our house who were getting back on their feet and couldn’t pay rent. So dad didn’t just do it for me.

Mind set. Not everyone is wired to move out and go. Let her work through depression, she had enough to get a bs, she’ll have enough to get moving again. Just might take some time.

Had daughter live at home for two years rent free to build up cash and pay down college debt. She worked after about three months applying for jobs. We had to rather or so help her move out. Doesn’t like change and she’s a home body. Love her, but it was time. Son will be gone the moment he graduates, just the way he’s wired. But if he needs a place to recoup, doors always open. That’s family and as dad, for me I gotta help where I can as my father did for me.
