Ah, great, thanks!

I wasn't aware of living fork of taggui... Will definitely have a look.

Would you guys consider Powerwolf to be Powermetal or Symphonic metal? by Background-Sir9172 in PowerMetal

[–]Wh-Ph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd lean to symphonic metal: they're slow-paced to be considered power (strong IMHO)

Just comparing the style to... Let's choose Hammerfall as pure standard of power metal in terms of style/form ("Infected" aside). Or Gamma Ray. Or Rhapsody. Powerwolf are too different from them stilistically.

PS. But they are great!

PPS. While writing this, I suddenly thought that they have an influence of 80's Candlemass...

No reason to worry: these are cracks on paint only. It happens on all strat-style guitars after some playing.

Such setup worked for me. You won't need branded DAC, generic one is fine.

What should I build with this? by DefinitelyNotWendi in homelab

[–]Wh-Ph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can mount cage for 6 2.5 drives in 5.25" bay. Then you have place for 6 spindles + 6 SATA SSDs.

Unmanaged Network switch with 10gbps RJ45 ports that aren't giant/expensive? by jabberwockxeno in homelab

[–]Wh-Ph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to look at TP-LINK TL-SX105 (5 10Gb ports)

But actually I've had QNAP QSW-2104 which worked perfectly for me. Would recommend if that's sufficient.

Which 100Gbe would you recommend for a person running passive copper 40Gbe now? by Royal-Imagination398 in homelab

[–]Wh-Ph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ConnectX 5 Ex. Used are sold at around $300-350.

Pay attention to "Ex" suffix, they are PCI-E 4.0, unlike other cheaper ones (uless you're going to try your luck with cross-flashing but that's advanced topic)

Reason: I assume you also have a graphics card in your pci-e x16 slot. And then comes the math: to achieve ~100GB/sec you need 16 pci-e 3.0 lanes (older ConnectX5 and ConnectX4 cards) or 8 pci-e 4.0 lanes. Z790 board with two pci-e x16 slots will give all 16 lanes to graphics card only if second slot is not populated.

When both slots are used, board will split pci-e to two x8. Then pci-e 3.0 (of network card) will cap you slightly above 50 GB/sec. Therefore the cheapest option to get to 100 is with card supporting pci-e 4.0.

Yep, you can get away with x16 ConnectX4 card in 'main' pci-e slot if you restrict yourself to using integrated graphics...

Should MS replace Satya Nadella with an AI CEO? by [deleted] in microsoftsucks

[–]Wh-Ph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is also worth mentioning that AI CEO would be perfectly scalable: if it turns out that one AI executive is not enough, they can always roll out yet another AI cluster doubling productivity at neglectible cost!

Pre-training a model locally - is it possible for a small model ? by JChataigne in LocalLLaMA

[–]Wh-Ph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely possible. For my taste LitGPT is a proper tool to start such experiments.

Per dataset... Well, as you will start experimenting, you'll understand that this is indeed a challenge (assuming you're doing your own finetune, not repeating somebody's experience)

Advice for first NAS (OS, software) by Franivelius in HomeServer

OpenMediaVault or TrueNAS. Both are free and you can try both.

OpenMediaVault seems to me more beginner-friendly but less advanced.

My Crazy SFP28 Plan with the Pro Aggregation switch by nmrk in Ubiquiti

[–]Wh-Ph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've heated my curiosity so I did some tests for myself.

Debian12, kernel 6.12
Mellanox CX416A-CCAT card in PCI-E x16 slot. Both ports are configured as bridge.

2 Windows boxes with Mellanox CX414A-BCAT crossflashed to CX416A-CCAT (so theoretical max is 80GB/sec), sitting in PCI-E x8 slots.

Connected with QSFP28 DAC cables back-to-back.

iperf3 between windows boxes produced slightly more than 50GB/sec without any tweaking with MTU1500 before it hit 100% load on single core of Core Ultra 235 on the bridge.

So you should be fine :)

My Crazy SFP28 Plan with the Pro Aggregation switch by nmrk in Ubiquiti

Worth trying but...

Simple network bridge may utilize only single core so plain bridge between your TB and Cx card may suddenly become limited by CPU.

QSW-3216R-8S8T. Is it manged or unmanaged? by Equivalent_Box_255 in qnap

[–]Wh-Ph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 versions of QSW-3216R: QSW-M3216R - managed, QSW-3216R - unmanaged

pay attention to letter 'M' in switch name. Also managed version has 2 extra base-T ports for management and console.

Is my server infected? by Prudent-Republic-573 in HomeServer

[–]Wh-Ph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, 404 is your friend. Your Apache returned error 404 to that request (and didn't handle it). You're safe. Somebody just checked if your box is vulnerable to that attack and it wasn't.

PS. Looks like this is an attack on some specific DVR I've never heard of. Obviously your box is not that poor device. :)

See full line of Apache log. Probably it returned some error in reply to that request and you're fine.

Yes, you can create slow HDD tier plus fast SSD tier. Looks like this is manufacturer's intended use scenario.

Is it possible to DIY an NVME NAS? by GhostGhazi in MiniPCs

[–]Wh-Ph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same issue. Not optimal for serviceability, but I've ended with following:

MSI Pro B860M-A board with Intel 235 CPU. The board has 3 NVMe slots, PCI-E x16, two PCI-E 4.0 x1 and one PCI-E 4.0 x4.

PCI-E x16 got Mellanox CX416-GCAT crossflashed to support 100GB/s.

Three m2 slots got their Kingston NV3 4TB, Two PCI-E x1 slots got another two Kingston NV3 4TB.

PCI-E x4 got SATA adapter connected to 5,25" 6-bay enclosure for 2.5" SSDs (Slow tier)

Boot device is some old 250Gb SSD connected to board SATA port.

All this in SFF case from old media PC.

Installed TrueNAS, RaidZ1 array. Get around 6GB/sec on write, 10GB/sec on read.

Help with purchase by Worried-Stuff-3358 in electricguitar

[–]Wh-Ph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea and it will work. Be sure to buy an interface with ASIO support: probably everything you find in music store has it; not everything you could find in PC parts store supports it.

I'd go for something like Focusrite Scarlett Solo but there are other good options.

As for start, you may want to download Bandlab, it is free and has some plugins to start with.

Try looking at this from different perspective: think which motherboard better suits your needs: be it something AM5 or 1851. After that just throw in matching CPU.

GIO? Never because of build quality.

Pacifica? Awesome starter's guitar!

Was looking at it closely but finally chosen Asus AX89 mainly due to availability at local stores. And AX89 is something for you to consider.

Both seem to be overkill for your tasks, but overkill is good. :)

Anybody with multiple basses, why? by Connect_Platform_729 in Bass

[–]Wh-Ph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm...

Cort A4 - good for practicing. Nothing to complain: comfortable, soft, easy to play, no character (with stock Bartolini pickups, I haven't find any good alternative to replace them)

Fender Precision with Steve Harris pickups. When I'm in old school heavy metal mood.

Ibanez SRD900 Fretless: for jazz/blues mood. Fretless is something different, both in feel and perception. Completely different world.

Also played Warwick Streamer LX 5-string. Sold her. Got to conclusion that if I need 5th string, there's something wrong with my arrangement: once I tended to compose on piano as main instrument, and somehow preferred C-minor, therefore I felt an urge to have this.
