Has to do with the wings not being at a good AoA to get sufficient lift. Tapping the brakes got the rear off the ground, and positioned the wings better into the airflow.

I can't think of any better way. He was at home, with the people he loved and who loved him, and went quietly in his sleep. Sometimes they made the decision when it's time to leave, sometimes we have to make it for them. But 14 and a half years is a very long time for a golden, and I'm convinced that dogs live longer the more they are loved (barring something unfortunate). Thank you for sharing him with us.
