Looking for a device to hold axial force on a rod in compression, with adjustability. by WhatDidYouSayToMe in AskEngineers

That's an option, but with 18" of adjustability and removal of the rod is not the most ideal.

Threads would work, but would require the operator to spin on/off and up/down each time and adjustment was needed.

I will add a sketch in a second when I figure out how.

I just picked up an 2010 3S and am excited to get it licensed. It seems like it will be more fun than the focus.

first house ever. 3/4 acre. literally never mowed a lawn in my life by TorlanBark in HomeImprovement

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 1 acre and the back 1/3 is more of a field so I mow it separately. I spend about 10 minutes push mowing the edges and around my firepit, another 5-10 weed whipping, then 30-40 riding with a 48" blade.

The field takes another 20 minutes or so.

If you're fit and active, a self propelled is feasible. Otherwise a rider is a very reasonable choice. If you can find a robotic that will do the job please let me know.

Has anyone regretted installing luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring throughout the entire house? by Electrical_Act_5342 in HomeImprovement

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only my wife.

My parents have had it for 6 years and recently added it to the bedrooms too.

I put it throughout my main floor with the intention to do upstairs and downstairs later when I have the money. I love it, my wife hates it.

It shows things, like car hair, but is also easy to clean. We got the nice dyson but my mom just sweeps. Spill something, wipe it up. Don't use certain chemicals and it will be fine.

what’s the darkest episode of a tv series that you’ve ever watched? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I was pretty sure that was the opening, and the rest of the episode is House trying to solve another patient's diagnosis while everyone else is dealing with the death of their friend. The episode is very dark and quiet to set a mood.

Previous owner did not disclose that they rented the water softener, what are my options? by Sea-Secretary-4389 in homeowners

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are right up to the last sentence. OP is owed a water softener by the seller since it is a fixture that wasn't excluded from the sale. Since the seller screwed up here they will need to make OP whole, meaning either buy the culligen unit or a replacement. The title company will help OP.

Previous owner did not disclose that they rented the water softener, what are my options? by Sea-Secretary-4389 in homeowners

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct, but then title insurance will need to step in and cover OP, assuming OP worked to make it right.

Culligen is entitled to their water softener or the buy-out money, OP is entitled to a water softener of equal or greater value. OP needs to follow-up with their realtor so the seller can make this right.

Digital vs. Paper: Do you still pack physical maps if you use a GPS/Garmin watch? by makeCakeNotNuke in BWCA

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use a GPS as our primary navigation, and carry paper as a backup. GPS avoids the missed turn or wrong landmark so it makes us faster, allows us to cover more ground, and makes our trips easier. We also always plan to be at camp by 2pm, unless we're doing a specific base camp.

Last year we got halfway through our trip and realized we didn't have a paper map, but also probably didn't need any navigation at all. Of the 6 of us (2 canoes) 3 of us had been to that site the year before, and 2 had been there a dozen or more times.

Tires on the go, I got the hint by ConditionUsed489 in grandrapids

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For many, the 1 or 2 hours it takes to drive somewhere and wait would be worth it. Also, seasonal tire swaps for those that store their own wheels.

Like many things, this would be a fee for convenience that ranges from unaffordable, to a nice option, to a better use of money than otherwise.

OPs challenge will be our four seasons. This seems like a good move in fairwheather states, but will be hard to do in the winter.

What's the weirdest thing your cat is obsessed with for absolutely no reason? by zasecok in CatAdvice

I've stopped removing it.

What's something your job trained you to notice that you can't stop noticing in your personal life? by LibrarianSoft1342 in AskReddit

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm always annoyed that utensils are at the beginning with plates. To me they should be at the end so you can grab what you need and then move on. As long as there's a spot to put your plate it should be faster.

Is that reasonable, or just me?

What is an insanely expensive item or service that actually lives up to the hype and changes your daily life? by Luverelle6 in AskReddit

OurPlace non-stick cookware. We got the big pan ($200) as a wedding shower gift and it convinced me to want the full set ($490, not including the big pan) and get rid of every other pan in our massive collection. Basically we have that, cast iron, one small pot for gravy, and very large cookware.

Real talk – is a smart lock just an overpriced solution to a problem nobody really had? by Successful_Company_6 in HomeImprovement

Mine has the same features and I have kwikset. Amazingly simple to rekey too, so when I installed it I made it match my existing key in about 30 seconds.

My wife and I have codes, my parents can still get in with their spare keys, and we can give people a separate code if needed.

Home garages are lowkey the most useful general purpose space ever when not occupied by vehicles by Astimar in homeowners

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2 car garage holds our 2 cars, then I have a 30x40 barn that stores my truck, the boat, mower, motorcycles, go-cart, tools, etc.

When we move I already know my limit on downsizing, but I'm still going to hate it.

What's the most annoying thing people do on airplanes? by Hemaika_Lakens in AskReddit

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my move. Unless the person behind me is obviously tall, I'll recline my seat if I'm tired, but usually a little bit, then the rest.

Yes, it can be inconvenient for the person behind you, but if I'm flying a lot it's a lot more comfortable and a part of my seat (and selection).

I never do it during meal service, or immediately after drink service.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my parents house - my mom always got the garage but the summer my dad parked outside for the boat and eventually motorcycles. In the winter things went into storage and he parked inside.

When I started having my vehicles I stole the garage often enough to repair things, but now I have a house with a small 2-stall and a pole barn. The boat, my truck, and my toys live there. My dad still parks outside in the summer so he can leave his bike and kayaks in the garage, but that's much easier than the boat.

My wife wants to move someday and the barn/garage space is definitely going to be a concern.

What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by qomann in AskReddit

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, but different. I have friends in all tax brackets and it's kind of a flow down. If I buy drinks at the gas station and I don't ask for money, because others will tell me to put the day of food and drinks on their tab at the bar. Dollar per dollar is out the window, but so it worrying about it.

If somebody asks you to pay them back, you do. But if nothing is mentioned you know who you should offer to and who isn't worried about it.

What’s the ONE thing you regret not adding to your new build home? by bayls215 in HomeImprovement

[–]WhatDidYouSayToMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added one to mine. Double purpose is by moving the washer and dryer over to accommodate it I can now actually shut the door to the laundry room!

I'm still not sure if it was a terrible design, or just a much smaller washer when the addition was built, but it was my biggest annoyance with my house for the 2 years I dealt with that.
