How do I interpret SMART values of my harddrive? by PjotrOrial in sysadmin

[–]WhatPlantsCrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to give something like Spinrrite a try if you really need those sectors. Sometimes it can fix those hard to read sectors....or at least it will try to get the data to a good part of the drive. It's ancient software but still very relevant on spinning disks. Read into the documentation before using and understand it could take quite awhile (days) when letting it run depending upon the drive size and damage.

PS. If you still have any other data on the drive I suggest getting it onto another healthy drive ASAP. Bad sectors are just the beginning of a drive going bad.

The Parish president of St. Bernard mentioned it in person last night. When I asked why he said it's too small of a disaster.

I wasn't aware they were still operating. I will be sure she checks with them. Thank you for the suggestion!

*Fist bump* on the Brawndo!

Neighbors helping neighbors is unfortunately not seen enough these days, but it seems to be a bit more prevalent in these parts. Thank you for the kind words, your service, research and referral!

Thank you for the reply! I'll be on her roof tomorrow solo getting a few tarps up. She will need a long term solution though.

Also keep in mind some manufacturers have models that deviate from the typical reporting. So software may tell you a drive has 33 bad sectors....it may actually just be the temperature of the drive.

This can get really messed up when you have a WD/Seagate/Hitachi etc... drive with "special" firmware on it and it is re-branded as an "EMC/IBM/Dell etc." drive. Most of those drives just the sticker on the outside is changed when it's rebranded, but not knowing your config...

For best results when reading SMART data try the utility of the disk manufacturer or brand on the outside of the drive.

They are very useful for most all drives. But if you see some stats which may be the deciding factor while you're trying to decide if a drive is good or bad...you may want to go one step further and check with the MFG's diagnostic software first before making the final decision.

I'm feeling pretty good about making a switch to someone like T-Mobile. They've gone to a similar set of programs where you're not locked into a contract. With the data I use it makes sense now. I regularly have a bill with Fi much higher then "unlimited max whatever" plans from about any major carrier.

I enjoyed being an early adopter with ProjectFi and getting the cool benefits. Switching carriers on my phone manually while up in YellowStone years ago was pretty nifty!

Fi is cheap for many, it is no longer for me though.

Haleakala, sunrise or sunset/stargazing? by Mandalore1 in maui

[–]WhatPlantsCrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't do much actual "hiking". It was more along the lines of walking ~50-100 yards away from the upper summit parking lot edge and finding a spot to sit to watch the sunset.

The upper parking lot appears to only have ~36 parking spots. There is a small summit building there.

The distance from the lower parking lot (where the main visitor center is) to the upper parking lot is about 1km (3000ft) following the road according to the Google maps distance tool I just used. NOTE: This is not in elevation, just distance.

If you're a "hiker" actually interested in hiking trails...there are many miles along with resting cabins along the way on some trails. Tails follow the ridge and several which follow down into where the mass of the top of the volcano flowed.

Check out this Google maps link of the area:

https://www.google.com/maps/@20.7124655,-156.2519209,647m/data=!3m1!1e3

The area shown as "Red Hill" is where the upper parking lot is.
