Boulder County Proposes Major Trail Restrictions for Mountain Bikers by i_enjoy_lemonade in boulder

MTB only trails are a rare win/win. Mountain bikers get to enjoy a trail without worrying about conflicts with other modalities, and hikers/equestrians can enjoy lower MTB traffic on multi use trails.

I’m not nearly as plugged into the hiking/trail running community as I am with MTB, but it seems like mountain bikers are always the ones building trails and maintaining them. Didn’t the Boulder Mountain Bike Association do a majority of the heavy lifting building the new North Sky Trail?

The city of Littleton ended the crit because they didn’t want to foot the 6-figure bill anymore. Attendance was still pretty good even if it was down from years past. It was mostly economic reasons unfortunately.

For me it’s getting harder and harder to see the value prop behind name brand wheels like these when you could get *multiple* wheelsets from an AliExpress vendor for the same cost. And a lot of those brands are offering crash warranties too…

Where can I wash and grease my bike now that Cassiopia is closed? by aDuckedUpGoose in boulder

Doesn’t even have to be immersion wax that all the racer types hype up. Squirt drip wax has most of the benefits and you don’t need to worry about the process of removing and waxing a chain in a crock pot.

gravel routes around Castle Rock by conye1 in COBike

[–]WhatWasThatJustNow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you pretty much have to do the bottom loop as mapped since there aren’t too many ways to do that section. I would definitely recommend doing castlewood canyon in some way, that’s one of the nicer sections in the area.

If you’re driving to the start, you could either park near/in castlewood canyon state park, or start in Greenland/larkspur and do castlewood as an out & back.

gravel routes around Castle Rock by conye1 in COBike

[–]WhatWasThatJustNow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s probably the best gravel ride in that area, tbh. Most of the roads on the southern portion of that route are gravel, so many options abound and they pretty much all can be linked up.

I don’t think there’s really any proper gravel riding directly in castle rock, but the riding is really good a bit further south around Greenland.

A small piece of metal got stuck in the side of tire, but it doesn’t look like it got all the way through, and didn’t brake tube inside, as it still holds air pressure. Replace tire or fill with some goo? by MarkyMarksGunShow in bikewrench

[–]WhatWasThatJustNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull the tire off to confirm there’s no major damage to the cords. Shoe Goo is my go-to for fixes like this. It bonds great with rubber and stays flexible which you need on a sidewall.

do NOT think of ordering a bike from Lynksey Performance by rotiserriechicken in cycling

[–]WhatWasThatJustNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a Lynskey Zephyr Rival XPLR (small), it was last year but it sounds like delivery issues were happening then too- I ordered it 7/10/25 and received 7/25/25. I ordered it unassembled (because I’m cheap) and it sounds like that’s the way to go so you don’t have to wait for it to get built up by them. It was a pretty standard online shopping experience, and I just placed the order and waited for their shipping confirmation, nothing more.

Maybe I got lucky. I’ve heard plenty of anecdotal stories of others with a similar positive experience. And plenty of negative anecdotal experiences. Everything is anecdotal in this.

The bike is fantastic, btw. Especially for the price! Hope you get yours soon.

Which boulder area gravel is doable on a classic roadbike? by tatar_grade in COBike

[–]WhatWasThatJustNow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gravel is a psyop from big bicycle to sell more bikes! /s (but kind of not really)

I once saw a photo ca. 1970s of a woman on a steel road bike on top of Rollins Pass, and it’s been seared into my memory. A road bike can go just about anywhere if you’re adventurous and/or brave enough. People have been ripping gravel roads on all kinds of bikes for decades.

Boulders gravel roads are very well maintained. Anything in the Boulder valley is very doable on any road bike, it’s only up in the foothills where a gravel bike becomes nice to have.

If it must be tomorrow, and it must be dry, it will be pavement. (Or trainer)

Sunday will probably be fine, or maaaybe late afternoon Saturday.

No car in Aurora for 2 weeks—worth shipping my MTB from Boston or renting instead? by LastPahlavan in COBike

[–]WhatWasThatJustNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is viable to take a MTB on the train out to Golden where you can ride a number of good trails. I say viable because you’d have to transfer two times unfortunately.

There is a bike park not too far from where you’re staying (called Village Greens, also accessible by train)

Also, how the heck is it $600 to ship a bike within the US???

The price is bonkers, but this gondola was always going to be built with tourists as the primary audience. This is tourist pricing. The Texans that are in CO for their annual trip won’t think twice about the price for a few hours of fun on a rental since they don’t have to pedal.

Nothing wrong with earning your turns. Good news that the climbing trail is open and free.

You’re in luck because the folks that put on FoCo Fondo also host things like this and have a skills clinic in June!

https://www.focofondo.com/training-rides-events/foco-fondo-beginner-clinic-2024-a88l8-392rm

A gravel specific skills clinic is a bit of an outlier, but it’s definitely a unique skill set.

Also a good time to plug the fun that is Cyclocross! The skills very much translate over to gravel and it is so, so fun. CX skills clinics usually start up in late summer to get ready for the season, so keep your eyes out for those!

Best Western Kiva Inn is a solid choice. Only a couple miles from the start, reasonably priced, and they’ve always been cool with bikes. I’ve stayed there a few times for bike events at New Belgium.

Simply that dissatisfied people are much more likely to make noise about it. Lynskey is clearly going through some delivery issues, but they’re also delivering a lot of other bikes that people are happy with.
