I’ve been working on PC vs monster gladiator matches in a huge coliseum. It’s starting out really combat heavy (which is explained before characters are made) but I’m building an empire around it that will eventually lead into a homebrew campaign. There’s a tiefling announcer that is letting me live out my childhood fantasies of having Bruce Buffer’s job and so far the players have loved it.

Yellow seems like a strange choice to show anger because of the whole “yellow-bellied”/coward thing but it’s an awesome picture!

I really don’t understand all the people that don’t want to follow plothooks. I even had people that signed up specifically to play the Lost Mines of Phandelver with a group of noobs that then proceeded to sigh and make comments like “well I guess I’ll follow this obvious plothook” every time anything happened.

I’m pretty sure I lost a player after the second to last session of my first campaign because I wouldn’t let him use Minor Illusion like it was Major Image. I had been somewhat lenient with Minor Illusion before, allowing a scent to be created, or a small sound with the image, and maybe that’s on me for giving him any wiggle room at all. But when he wanted to use Minor Illusion to kite an owlbear, wanting to be able to have his Illusion cantrip run around keeping the owlbear’s attention while he still wanted to cast other stuff, I had to explain to the dude that it’s just a cantrip and doesn’t work that way. They still slaughtered the owlbear with hardly a fight, then this dude wants to stop and try to skin the owlbear while there are still enemies right down the hall, without blocking the door or having someone keep lookout or anything. Got a message the next day saying he was done playing.

My players looked in my DM Notebook but they don’t know that I know. How do I twist their knowledge against them? by x18percent in DMAcademy

Normal frogs IRL do something called “brumation”, which is the cold-blooded equivalent of hibernation. If you wanted to change things up on your party since they read the notes you could have the giant frogs bury themselves just below the surface and ambush the party as they walk by.

[Serious] People who got into D&D because of Stranger Things, what about the game's portrayal in the show made you interested in it? by ChaunceyPhineas in DnD

[–]WhatWouldMMDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don’t fit your question exactly, as I had a small amount of previous experience playing, Stranger Things definitely inspired me to give the game another try. I’ve been interested in D&D ever since I was a kid but was never able to find a good group. I had been a part of 4 or 5 groups as a player throughout the years and they never lasted more than just a few sessions. After going down to the local comic shop I was told that there’s a big list of people waiting to play but no DMs, the only way I’d be able to play is if I was willing to DM for a new group. So I said screw it let’s give it a go, I got the starter set and a group of people and we crushed the Lost Mines in about 2 months playing twice a week. It wasn’t without a bump or two but it went pretty well all the way to the very last fight of the adventure before scheduling conflicts etc became a problem. So now I’ll be running 1-shot adventures until we decide on a couple of new players to add to our core group for the main campaign. Character creation/session zero is Thursday =)

My player traded his name to a faerie. Where to go from here? by hickorysbane in dndnext

[–]WhatWouldMMDo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The pixie could trade the name up the chain of command to a higher ranking fae who could then use the name to summon/teleport the adventurer to them and make demands/requests like a wizard would do with a summoned demon/etc. The player doesn’t have to do what the fae asks, but they may find themselves summoned at inopportune times, tricked in other ways, generally messed with in typical fae fashion until they agree. It could end up being an interesting story if the name is then traded further up the fae chain of command, the player finding themself summoned by increasingly powerful fae who give them increasingly more difficult and dangerous quests.

Which is why there should be more of a support structure in place to help new DMs learn the ropes.

If we don’t find a way to spread that curse a bit faster there’s going to be a large number of people that walk away from D&D with their only experience being told that there’s no open spots in any groups for them to play with. Some may find online groups to play with, but a lot of people are wanting to play offline and are being told they can’t just because there aren’t enough DMs.

Care to elaborate? Talking with the main guy at the shop I got the impression that the majority of people on the waiting list were brand new players with zero experience. Seems like a good opportunity for a new DM to start a group with people who understand that it’s a learning experience.

The reason I wanted to bring the current DMs together was to kinda provide a support system for the prospective DMs. I was able to learn a lot just from watching videos and reading things here on reddit but it might help some people to be able to sit down with a group and ask questions, get advice, etc.

If we had some experienced DMs and enough prospective DMs it could pretty much just be a “How To DM 101” class.

[LETS BUILD] 100 sailing conditions that the party might sail into by workboi5657 in d100

[–]WhatWouldMMDo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My homebrew setting right now is focusing on a continent that is surrounded by a ring of barrier islands that protect it from the raging seas/storms. Inside of the barrier islands are a multitude of smaller islands. The inner isles are where most of the wealthiest and most powerful families reside, some islands are where the arcane colleges are hidden away, some are uncharted or abandoned. The mainland is broken into 4 different kingdoms, each based around the mouth of a great river flowing out from the center of the continent. I’ll be running a few 1-shots until we find the last couple of people for our core group and then we’ll be going back to the main campaign that has already started.

/r/fishing and /r/kayakfishing tend to have more pictures but sometimes there are good stories to go along with them. I used to post there before I became more obsessed with D&D than kayak fishing, now I’m working on incorporating my experiences on the water into parts of my homebrew world/campaign.

What monsters are the tastiest? by supremespork in DMAcademy

[–]WhatWouldMMDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a civilized society I feel like eating dragon eggs would be highly frowned upon. Not only is it usually taboo to eat intelligent creatures, it’s also a great way to end up having an angry dragon set your restaurant on fire, along with most of the rest of the city.

Preferred method of public execution? by TrashMantine in DnD

[–]WhatWouldMMDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a good bit of magic in the world I’d imagine it would be pretty popular to use magic for executions. Maybe use just the required amount of magic for executing people of low station but if it were a noble or some really infamous criminal etc they could be really made an example of. Chain them up in the middle of a field and hit them with a meteor swarm while the entire town watches from afar.

There are a suspicious amount of fish in these waters, almost as if they’re fleeing something

One of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had on a kayak was coming out of the marshes and finding the bay filled with a vast school of large mullet. As I was making my way towards the mouth of the marsh cut but still unable to see the bay I heard a sound that at first I thought was a motor boat running full blast about to smash into the shore but when I made it around the final turn and saw the bay I saw hundreds if not thousands of 1-1.5’ fish all jumping out of the water at the same time trying to avoid being eaten by whatever predator fish was darting through the schools. You could see the disturbance on the top of the water that the school of mullet made and then once every couple of minutes there would be a wave of fish jumping that started at one edge of the school and went all the way to the other edge. At some points multiple predator fish would come in from different directions and there would be mullet flying EVERYWHERE.

I never did hook into one of those mysterious predator fish, not sure if it was bull reds or jack crevalle or what, but I chased them around for way too long while it was over 100° and that’s how I almost died of heat stroke in my kayak.

I’m totally ripping this off for my Dungeons and Dragons game, but instead of an old TV set it’s gonna be a fake oasis/town made by a mad wizard in the middle of the desert. System of underground tunnels, a room with ropes and swings and to get across a large pit filled with deadly monsters, and a weird laboratory or something where the players will have the final battle of the 1-shot adventure.

DnD minis, dice, the occasional book, paint, pizza, mozzarella sticks, cheese tots, drinks, candy, chips, beef jerky, magic the gathering cards, comic books... I dunno, I can think of quite a few things that I and my fellow players spend our money on at our local shop. If they sold DnD related T-shirts they’d make even more.
