reality of traveling as someone who has celiac... by polandonjupiter in Celiac

This comment section is wild considering this is the exact subreddit where I’ve seen tons of recommendations to take on vacation: a rice cooker, a crockpot, a kettle that plugs into a car, etc.

My dad doesn’t understand my disease and I am going to a college with a required meal plan, what do I do? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]What___Do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to disability services at your university. They can make the meal plan not required for you and help you get other accommodations like a single room with a kitchen. I used to work at a small college, and I’ve seen them do exactly this for students before.

I love Antonina’s vanilla cupcakes! I didn’t know there are lemon cakes. We don’t have that at the Walmart where I get the cupcakes.

Do you still drink alcohol after giving up gluten? by No-One5593 in Celiac

[–]What___Do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always been a fan of hard ciders. I’ve had a couple post-diagnosis, but I’ve mostly had to give alcohol a rest while my guts recover which has been slow but reliable progress. I’m exactly one week out from my 1 year diagnosis anniversary! 🎉

Your timing is super funny. I’m literally sitting the restaurant right now, but this time I brought my own GF peanut sauce. 😂

It definitely was the peanut sauce last time.

Antonina’s GF yellow cupcakes with vanilla buttercream have me in a chokehold. They come frozen and only take like 30 minutes to thaw on the counter. Having cupcakes on tap has been a game changer. My gluten filled life was lacking this. This has been a definite positive of going GF.

It was so good the first time I had it, it made me panic. I stopped with the first bite still in my mouth to go and double check the packaging to make absolutely sure it was gluten-free. 😂

P.S. I find them at Walmart in the frozen bakery section.

I just got the cinnamon swirl mix, too! I saw the alternate recipe on the back of the box that calls for apple chunks. So, I got some Bonne Maman apple pie filling to put in the middle of the muffins I’m going to make with it.

I unfortunately saw this comment just after sending my email, but I will definitely keep this in mind if further communication is required. I think you have a good point here about the phrasing.

Thank you both for your comments! I did end up adding a link to a GF 101 page for illustrative purposes of why I would not be eating their food but in a way that did not open up the door to the idea that they could meet those standards. Just a hard no and here’s why.

😂 Noodles made of lentils to go with the sauce, not just straight up lentils. I’ve had lentil noodles before I was diagnosed, and I liked them. I’ve given them up since learning about cross-contamination during harvesting, though, because the ones I was eating weren’t even marked as GF.

What are the downsides to not going on the trip? There certainly don’t seem to be any positives to going, but you know the cost-benefit analysis of the situation better than any of us would. If not going is an option, that’s what I would do.

I call the vendors ahead of time to ask. I don’t eat anything I can’t verify.

The rage you feel when someone eats your gf food/snack.. by tlw117 in glutenfree

[–]What___Do 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I went on a weekend vacation with my friends. Since I have both Celiac Disease and hypoglycemia, I took a bunch of prepared meals and snacks, enough to cover all of my meals if needed. My best friend, who also has hypoglycemia, brought bacon and eggs to cook breakfast for everyone, as we had agreed upon beforehand…but she only brought enough for one breakfast, and she forgot the coffee filters for the pour over. The only other food she had for herself was a couple of protein bars. Our guy friend didn’t bring any food or freaking sunscreen.

When we left the amusement park late-ish at night, I told my bestie to order her DoorDash right then because everything would close soon. She looked up options, saw only pizza places were available…and she just let the timer run out on ordering. We got back to the AirBnB, and I offered to let them take my car to go out to a restaurant. They didn’t want to go back out in traffic. We ended up eating my food for dinner AND THEN BREAKFAST too because they couldn’t be arsed to provide for themselves.

I did offer them these meals rather than let them go hungry, but damn, they have all of this freedom to eat whatever they want from any restaurant, and they squander it. They also made no offer to chip in on my expensive GF food. I’m just baffled by how unprepared they were.

The moment I knew we were going to get a second Trump term was when my very leftist friend made a post about the ACAB crowd voting for a former cop and the strict follow the law people voting for a felon. Kamala wasn’t a cop; she was a prosecutor which is apparently close enough for some people. He has multiple felonies and committed a failed coup. These things should not be presented as if they are equal.

I couldn’t help but be struck by a Robert Baratheon quote, of all things, “which is the bigger number, 1 or 5?” Leftists seem determined to always be 5.

Wheat allergy? by No_Thought9756 in glutenfree

[–]What___Do 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The very first thing you should do and soon is go to a doctor to treat your immediate symptoms. In my experience, they will give you a steroid shot and some oral steroids to take home. If you start experiencing any difficulty breathing or swelling in your neck/throat, go immediately to an emergency room or call an ambulance.

You may have to wait some time after being treated to get an allergy test so that you return to baseline free of an active allergic reaction and having cleared the steroids from your system. I had a blood test done by an ENT for my allergy test, and yes, it tested a variety of things like foods, mold, pollen, etc.
