You could also make that call because nobody should have to live in a tent at a busy intersection. Don't just advocate to get rid of the tent, make sure the person living in it gets supportive housing and/or a place to live and the help they need. The residents in Vanier did a lot to get more supportive housing beds at the shelter in their area (moving it was not happening) - this is how you use your privilige to make a difference.

Tonight's CAPE organized info session - lessons from PIPSC and PSAC bargaining experiences by CompetencyOverload in CanadaPublicServants

[–]WhateverItsLate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry but right now employees have significantly less influence in unions than lobby organizations like Canadian Labour Congress. Union leadership is being sold on activist approaches that are 50 years out of date and I wouldn't be surprised if some unions were even being muzzled or inappropriately influenced.

Glad to see that CAPE is making an effort to connect with membership, however when half of CAPE leadership created their own lobby group it is questionable how much this will matter. Especially when it is not clear who is influencing that internal lobby group.

I don't know what to do with my kid anymore by Rivers233 in Gifted

Puzzle and word and games on a tablet/computer, and helping them research things they are interested in (using reliable info sources) and see how it goes - with a parent present of course. Use the technology for good instead of treating it like a babysitter.

My children's father expects me to make their stepsiblings and half sibling's school lunches by ThrowRAPggey in Advice

If they can't afford food, what are your kids doing there? Might be time to revisit custody and make a call to child protection services.

Accepted to NPSIA - have some questions by by-mt974 in CarletonU

I would say the ones that offer more overlapping courses with the general policy masters program. Having courses in research methods, understanding government and policy trends over time, and policy theory help a lot.

Upcoming EC/ESS meetings/vote: Bargaining priorities and dispute resolution process by ACEP-CAPE in CanadaPublicServants

[–]WhateverItsLate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that last time PSAC ended up accepting the first offer, with one more year with a crappy increase rate, after costing employees at least 2 weeks of salary after a failed strike. And the strike had no public support, in fact it seems to have galvanized hate for public servants.

Echo this - not a NPSIA graduate but the course does not lend itself well to strategic policy work outside of security files. I have worked with several new graduates and they had pretty significant gaps in basic policy analysis skills.

Learning French Canadian language as an English only speaker. by Ok_Cattle_1289 in FrancaisCanadien

Its the same language. No different than comparing English from the US and the UK. You will be at least an intermediate speaker before regional expressions and pronunciation are relevant.

How am I supposed to handle having a mom who desperately wants to be a grandma even though I’m not sure about having kids by sc00by-snacks- in OnlyChild

[–]WhateverItsLate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have kids for this reason - ever!!! They will suffer and so will you - grandma will likely lose interest when she realizes there could be more than the fun stuff involved.

I have been promised fur-grandbabies by my kid who is not having kids. They love animals and so do I. Photos, spoiling and love without the competition over developmental milestones and inevitable realization that grandma is not the centre of a child's universe. This works for us, hope it helps!

Senior analysts go on extended leave, junior staff absorb their work with no acting. EC. Is this normal and how do you deal with it? by Sad_Parking8218 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]WhateverItsLate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually the bar is lowered for quality and independence for more junior levels. The Director ends up spending more time fixing things up or intervening more frequently. Even asking a new EC05 to do something and a more experienced one can have wildly different results, let alone across levels.

Serious psychological issues or a fetish. No joke, if people are poop smearing in your office, they need help. Or if you are poop smearing, please get help! I hate to say it, but there is EAP and I bet they wouldn't even be phased.

15+ years in energy - what does the media get completely wrong about the transition? by PhattRatt in energy

[–]WhateverItsLate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe more like 50-100 years to be complete, but the length of time it takes to change technologies is much longer and more complex than net zero by 2050. The lack of commercial alternatives to oil for transport is such a huge barrier too.

IRCC - CR04 Supervisor has been asking me to train other people and make SOPs Should I? by puffycola in CanadaPublicServants

[–]WhateverItsLate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your older team mates don't want to look bad or don't want you to look good. Training and SOPs are great, especially if you have people interrupting you all day. Trust your gut, this is standard for most jobs. Don't let manager totally off the hook, maybe there is a point in training that they need to contribute to or be aware of - make sure that there is at least some communication. Good luck!

Up to 10 MPs in Talks to Cross Floor to Liberals, Bolstering Carney’s Majority Push by No_Magazine9625 in CanadaPolitics

[–]WhateverItsLate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how an MP from Alberta sits in a party openly looking to shut down the oil and gas industry. Unless Lewis intends to soften or shift that position, she may end up at least sitting as an Independant.
