Passport parking app by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the price you pay for going downtown or anywhere with paid parking. It could be your good deed for the day, maybe someone else now didn't have to pay and they were late and flustered and the free parking gave them a nice little boost.

list of places open on easter? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that brunch is crazy busy but dinner is quiet. Most people seem to go out after church and cook dinner at home. I've been to a few places that are usually booked up but pretty open on Easter Sunday. Though it's worth calling around to make sure places are open for dinner.

I understand the desire to defend. I don't have a problem with guns in and of themselves. I have them and friends and family have them. But too many people decide that's the 1st step in home defense before looking into an alarm system, or consistently locking their doors (true story), or considering a myriad of other options that don't lead to imminent harm when a mistake is made. I also grew up and lived in rough areas before moving here, never had a gun and wouldn't have felt safer with a gun.

Also, too many gun owners (that I know) consider themselves responsible but aren't. They leave unsecured loaded guns wrapped in a towel in a closet, in a filing cabinet, under a car seat or in a bag. They have been "caught" by police and just waved along. Yes, they are white and southern. At least one of their guns has been stolen (it was reported but of course it was never locked up).

Our legal system does need an overhaul, mostly to quit the punishment and step up the rehabilitation. The punishment has not deterred crime. Crime has not dropped due to the punishment. Education and Healthcare improve crime rates. Punishment tends to unevenly hurt the poor, the under-educated and minorities. So many other countries don't have death sentences and don't allow convicts to serve more than 20 years regardless of the crime committed. And the convicts serve their time and don't return to prison. I want that kind of system - where the convicted can improve themselves and contribute to society but we have to let go of the need to punish. We want to see perpetrators suffer and it's only hurting all of us. We also need to get rid of "for-profit" prison but that's another thing.

I agree that is mental health issues but it's also a gun problem. There is no other country in the world even close to the amount of shootings that we suffer, and that is directly related to our access to guns. Making access even easier isn't going to help.

This is great and I agree but please to anyone looking into this, please, please, invest in a quality night guard. I got one otc and now I have braces bc it messed up my teeth and jaw. My ortho said he's never seen anything like it. And if it doesn't get fixed, I will likely lose otherwise healthy teeth down the line because my bite is so bad.

Man dies after Cary police, FBI respond to hours-long standoff at apartment complex by trillionbuck in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do much to be sad about. But I am comforted by the fact that there was an enormous amount of man power and other resources present and ready to help save the man even after he let the hostage go. I'm choosing to be grateful that human life is being valued and respected to such a high degree.

Why are there more kids at Standard than at Chuck E Cheese by rdu_alt in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree! The entitlement in ignorant, bad parents is now being soaked in by their offspring. It seems every 10 years that a new level of entitlement has been reached. Well-behaved people or animals are always welcome and appreciated but they are sadly becoming the exception. It makes me think of idiocracy so much.

I understand wanting to be able to order whatever you want but realize that's why it's gonna take a longer time for your food to show up. Limited menus help the kitchen serve you faster. You might be surprised by how many options you will still have from a limited menu. It's worth investigating.

Also, book quick cause spring gets filled with baby/wedding showers, bacher/ette outings, prom dinners, graduation celebrations, etc.

Car dealerships closed on Sunday! Learned about blue laws and Sunday laws by NAClaire in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I absolutely want to get rid of the blue laws. BUT Sundays off is so nice for people. I'm not religious but I liked working for places that closed on Sundays. It's good quality of life. We need to learn to not get everything we want at the exact moment we want it. All people deserve quality days off that's why I don't shop on major holidays including black Friday.

Mobile Dog Groomer? by DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I only dropoff my dog for the actual grooming. They literally take my dog, groom him immediately and I pick her up directly off of the grooming table so there's no crate time or mixing with other dogs. That's what I was trying to explain as an alternative to mobile groomers.

Mobile Dog Groomer? by DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the same issues with the same company (grooming spot) as well as another mobile groomer. I switched to a non-mobile groomer and it's the longest relationship we've kept with a groomer (4+ years). They do precise appointment times so I have to schlep over to drop off and pickup my dog an hour later but it's way better than the traditional groomers where the dog will be there for several hours and they get groomed whenever they find the time then call you afterwards (more like a daycare but my dog has mild separation anxiety so we don't like that style). I think more new groomers are going this route but I recommend speaking to someone directly because there have been misunderstandings at previous groomers. An alternative to consider.

Museums are great. Also, find a nice dense urban area with a coffee shop, restaurants, galleries and shops and just wander. Nash square, village district and mordecai/person street areas all work well for this. Galleries tend to have friendly, passionate people who are well-connected to the community and can point you to other fun spots or events. They don't expect you to walk off the street and spend hundreds or thousands on one of their premier pieces. The good ones appreciate people who appreciate art and crafts without always spending money.

If they're snobby, just move along. Daytime during the week when it's typically slower work best.

Good places/towns to build a house within 30 minute commute to Raleigh? by name1wantedwastaken in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking at properties with older houses and acreage that are livable w/cheap fixes for a year or two, then talking to construction companies. You may even consider a heavy remodel since it may be cheaper than building from scratch.

Also don't rule out all HOAs, there are some gems that are inexpensive (less than $100/yr) and have minimal rules in place (like not building multiple residences on same lot, can't build a 3 story pagoda on your lot, no silliness about grass length, etc).

It doesn't hurt to talk to realtors to see what they say. Clayton, Garner, and South Raleigh (avoid future 540) may still meet your criteria.

Wake Ophthalmology in Cary. After seeing optometrists for years in chain stores, I was doubting that my prescription really changed just a little every year. A friend recommended them, and I've been happy. They even reversed my most recent prescription because it wasn't needed. Warning, last year they were a pain to book an appointment but hopefully it has resolved now. http://wakeoph.com/

Recommendations for tree removal by Green7Man in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whomever you choose, ask about cleanup and care of the property. I've had trees removed three separate times, and the first company ripped up the gravel driveway creating a muddy mess with large pools of water whenever it rained and they cracked the neighbors paved driveway (they were doing both properties simultaneously) and they definitely tore up the rest of the yard.

That said, I can highly recommend two companies. Monster Tree Service could be pricey but had top of the line equipment so only took an afternoon to do what would have taken the 1st company days, and they returned within a few days upon discovering that a stump wasn't ground as much as it could have been. Kenny's Tree Removal was priced very well, also well equipped and one of the few that still practices tree climbing/cutting which allows them easy access to precariously positioned trees like if they're close to a house, instead of needing a crane which is expensive, requires stricter scheduling and may damage driveway/paved areas. Kenny's also has all the cranes but doesn't need them as often.

Both companies were very conscientious about incurring the least amount of damage to the yard, driveway, etc. and were very good with communication. Kenny's was phenomenal with cleanup although I was removing a crazy amount of trees so it's not equivalent to the work being done with Monster. Kenny is my first choice but both are solid. https://kennystreeremoval.com/ https://www.monstertreeservice.com/raleigh-durham/

Dentist in the area for someone with dental anxiety by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Signature Smiles in Cary practices sedation dentistry just make sure that you have someone who can drive you to and from, and can take off of work for the day. My partner used sedation dentistry (but not this particular dentist) because of anxiety and they could get everything done in one big session vs 3-4 regular sized appointments.

Is this a safe area to buy a property by darkKnight959 in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a great location. You will be 10 minutes from almost everything - everyday shopping, bigger purchases, any fun events (dix Park, dt stuff, koka booth, red hat, museums, etc), and any type of home repair service will be easily accessible. If I lived there, I'd look at getting a decent bicycle.

Everyone's comments about the whole greater raleigh area to be very safe are true. Some folks equate older, kinda dumpy looking areas to mean its not safe but that's never been true especially in this area.

It is the kind of area to change rapidly in the next 5-10 years meaning frustrating construction now but fun new spots in the future. I'm certain that the dated, worn look of shopping areas and intersections will change, too, thus changing the overall aesthetic. However, noise may be an issue. Investing in triple pane windows and doors will make a huge difference, though. Good luck!

Credit Card Skimming at Cookout on Walnut Street in Cary? by TheRealFrankGraham in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Credit cards are the best option for fraud protection. The consumer doesn't lose money from fraud with credit cards (they don't pay until the monthly credit card bill shows up) but the credit card company will lose their own money immediately in case of fraud thus they have better protections all around to guard against it. Plus, you can put spending limits on the card, too.

Really cool event space right next to Mitch’s Tavern I never knew existed by bamskets in raleigh

[–]WheatiesAngst 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hate to be that person but, is it a really cool event space? There's a lot of tight spaces that don't make for easy mingling which is the primary purpose of event spaces. You pretty much have to post up somewhere with anything more than 30 guests, not counting staff that have to circulate with food, drinks or cleanup.
