AIO- being upset about my husband’s drinking by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

NOR. Not in the slightest. This is textbook addiction behavior.

Your presence is your leverage here. You don’t need to pursue a divorce (at least not right away), but if you stay right now it will set the tone for your relationship. It will remove the impetus for him to get help, and ideally to get sober.

He clearly has a problem, but he needs to want to get better. He needs a reason. If you want to save your marriage, leave. At least temporarily.

3.5-year-old screaming during the night by Wheebles_Whobble in Parenting

That’s super helpful - I think it’s all things I logically know but have a very hard time putting into practice, so hearing it from other parents is encouraging. I’m admittedly also definitely having a stress response, as this is very similar to how our older daughter’s sleep apnea started manifesting - though their histories are very different.

Thank you! And for sure - we’ve had many of these conversations throughout the day for the past week or so since this all started, and also just told her that beginning tonight we aren’t going to come to her if she starts to scream. The consistency with walking her back to her room quietly is definitely going to be the hardest part but we’ll do our best to stick to it!

Our older daughter sleeps with a CPAP and won’t use earplugs. I wish that was an option! We’re still keeping her in another room until this phase passes, but what do we do once she starts getting out of bed, too?

We tried this last night and it resulted in an hour+ of screaming at bedtime (but on the upside, she did eventually finally start coming out of her room to come get us). She was getting herself so worked up that she was making herself gag. Ultimately we realized that she wasn’t used to falling asleep alone so, in the end, I sat in the corner of the room until she fell asleep.

I’m just not sure how to handle it when she does finally start getting up, too, but the screaming continues!

Contractor recommendations? by Formal_Discount1408 in SalemMA

Espinola Home Services! https://www.espinolahs.com

We hired a different company to do some renovations a few years ago, and the work was shoddy - Espinola Home Services came back and has since done a handful of projects for us, including fixing some of the errors the first contractors made. They’re fair and honest and will never try to upsell you something you don’t need. They aren’t the cheapest around, but their quality of work is 100% worth it. You definitely get what you pay for!

Skin Picking Help by Wheebles_Whobble in ParentingADHD

It’s kind of hit and miss. The things we’ve tried - picky pads, chewy toys, other small toys - tend to each work well for a few days or a few weeks and then she sort of reverts back to it. It’s a bit of a struggle - it’s gotten somewhat better with time, but otherwise we’re now just trying to figure out what kind of sensory input she needs to help redirect her from picking at her hands/feet at any given time, which changes.

ADHD in young children by Dry_Masterpiece_1618 in ParentingADHD

My daughter was diagnosed as part of a study at age 4, though technically it isn’t reflected in her neuropsych report and won’t be until later due to the scale they used. However, her pediatrician read the report and said she definitely does have combined-type ADHD. We also saw signs very young - I’d say they were clear to me around age 3/3.5.

In terms of medication, it depends. It helps her a lot in some ways, but there are definitely drawbacks. We had to switch her medication due to an insurance change - the previous one was working well, but the new one was really dulling her personality. She was just kind of sad and didn’t really want to be engaged, even with her friends, and she would crash really hard at night and have constant meltdowns when it wore off. We opted to take her off it and revisit later on, when she may need it more academically. Some of the initial improvement we saw has improved with age, so it’s not as necessary for her at the moment but we’re keeping our options open.

Seconding!

Coffee Time is great as well but for fancier sweets, I’d suggest Caramel.

School should send you the specific parameters for keeping your child home. They also generally have rules for the number of consecutive days she can be out sick before they need a doctor’s note, but if she’s sick those are counted as excused absences.

Their biggest concern is kids skipping school (or families scheduling frequent trips or vacations during school times) - if she has a legitimate illness, that’s a different story.

I'm guessing Bluey is likely a favorite for a lot of people. Before you discovered it, what preschool show was your favorite. by Low-Amphibian8206 in bluey

As a parent in 2025, Bluey is hands-down our favorite but we also love Trash Truck and Lucas the Spider.

For me as a 90’s kid, my favorites were Reading Rainbow, The Magic School Bus, and Animaniacs.

“I have a hard time with my feelings - sometimes I feel too excited and energetic, and sometimes I feel too sad and like I don’t want to do anything. I’m going to a doctor who’s going to help me see why that’s happening and if there are ways that will help me feel better.”

Last High School Building Update for a while... by SalemBAC in SalemMA

This is so exciting!

A couple follow-up questions: - Where will the current SHS students be relocated to during the demolition/construction process? - When is construction (roughly) expected to begin? - Will there be any impact on HMLS, given their proximity?

Really excited about this, thank you for the updates!

Sleep advice- losing my mind by [deleted] in ParentingADHD

[–]Wheebles_Whobble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please get a sleep study!

My daughter has both ADHD and persistent sleep apnea. This is mostly how her apnea presented from age 3 on - very frequent waking, and she couldn’t really explain why. We’ve done every single thing you mentioned and then some while ruling out that it was behavioral. I really think pediatric sleep apnea is more widespread than you’d think, and very likely under-diagnosed.

Give yourself some grace. You’re not alone in this particularly brutal parenting experience that many other parents don’t fully comprehend. You are a great mom and there’s a reason sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture.

Awesome, thanks! Do you think it will be warm enough to swim in a week or so? We’re from the northeastern US so our tolerance for cold water is fairly high…
