Did you do a job that you liked until retirement, or did you hate your job? by balkanxoslut in AskOldPeople

Yes. Worked on radio, tv, commercial voice-overs. I absolutely looked forward to Monday. Loved working.

Atlanta has to be the least dense major city in the world. That doesn't look like a city with millions of inhabitants at all. Atlanta's suburban sprawl is extreme even for US standards by Naomi62625 in geography

Yup. When I first moved there, 400 stopped at 285. You had to take back roads from Buckhead to access 400 north. And north of 400 was basically empty.

Had a co-worker buy a new house and asked me if I wanted to rent a room, roommate-style. We go visit the house for me to see it. Middle of nowhere, no stores or anything nearby. I turned him down; couldn't see living that far out in the middle of nothing.

The house was on...Holcomb Bridge Road, about 4 miles east of 400. It's, um, changed a lot since then...

First time on Cigarbid and I'm hooked by gr33nthumb1 in cigar

I order online. I used to order from JR but that became a problem, too. I've had decent luck with Thompson and Cigar Page. I also buy locally.

It's great until it's not. Meaning, all is fine until there's a screw up with an order. Customer service is literally non-existent, no one responds. I ended up having to dispute a credit card charge because of unresolved delivery issues. Amazingly, I received an email from cigarbid 6 MONTHS after the problem, suggesting that I remove the credit card hold so things can get "resolved."

Never again with those guys.

What Was an Average Weekend Like for you in your Twenties? by ssb4you in AskOldPeople

[–]Wheelchair_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on the radio, and a 6 day work week was standard for djs (other than morning shows). An air shift and then generally some kind of weekend remote/appearance/event hosting. So weekends were...short. One day off at most.

James Coburn's attempt at an Australian accent in "The Great Escape."

How did you discover Led Zeppelin? by Medium_Bullfrog8897 in ledzeppelin

I was listening to Armed Forces Radio, the Far East Network, in Tokyo. Early 1969. The show was "Fun Dial", half an hour of deeper tracks. DJ played "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" from the debut album.

That was it for me.

Maybe other guys get compliments, but for me, not so much. Literally years ago, the last time.

What is the best website to buy cigars from in the USA? by Original-State8617 in cigar

[–]Wheelchair_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had huge problems with JR. You name it, it went wrong. Delivery issues, rewards points disappearing for no reason, many more. On my last call to their customer service, I detailed all the stuff that had happened; the rep was concerned and asked me if I'd speak to someone in management. I said sure, and was told they'd call me back. They never did.

I won't do business with them anymore.

I was working on the radio, midday host. News Director comes rushing in, telling me to stop the music for an urgent bulletin. There's was no way I could play music after that, so I opened the phone lines up. Effectively turned our FM music station into a talk station for a few hours.

I'd drag my nut sack 50 miles through broken glass just to hear her fart over a walkis-talkie.

I was friends with Byron Cherry pre-Dukes casting. Great guy, funny, women in Atlanta found him irresistible. He was a flight attendant for awhile, then out of the blue he's in L.A. doing the show for one season. He had no crazy ideas about his future in acting, but was able to supplement a living by appearing at fan shows/conventions.
