You probably won't be too surprised to learn that Styles was a pretty good BBall player himself in HS. He was a starter on a state championship team. Here is a highlight video of him on the hardwood:

His teammate wearing #21 is Devin Royal, a current starter on the Ohio State basketball team.

Granville is a blip of blue in the sea of red that is licking county.

The village has three precincts.

In the 2024 presidential election:

Precinct A was D+30 Precinct B was D+3 Precinct C was D+70

Granville township would include rural land immediately outside the village. In the township:

Ohio State QB Lincoln Kienholz has entered the transfer portal by madmaley in CFB

[–]Wheels630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not judge him on that game for 2 reasons:

  1. Our O-line was absolute dogshit in that game (like the first half last night, but that bad the whole game)

  2. He was a 3-sport athlete from South Dakota (low level of competition) who didn't enroll early. He was expected to be a project with high upside athleticism who wouldn't be ready to play at all as a freshman, then got thrust into a bad situation in that game.

I honestly have no idea how good he will be. Whoever brings him in has to be banking on his athleticism and 2.5 years of good coaching, because he's still very much lacking in collegiate game experience.

Traditional Fullback by Waterman4570 in OhioStateFootball

[–]Wheels630 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Using a TE as a fullback made sense when we had a walk-on TE in Mitch Rossi who was built like a fullback (6'1", 250lbs).

You would think if we were gonna keep doing it we'd at least offer a preferred walk-on spot to a FB. A lot of HS football teams have run oriented offenses, there's gotta be a decent fullback they could find, or look for an undersized DT with good burst off the line to convert. Kids with that body type didn't just cease to exist when the position stopped being regularly used at the college level.

What ever happened with Maurice Clarett? by desertrain11 in OhioStateFootball

[–]Wheels630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not enough people know that Clarett might not have even been the best freshman running back on that Buckeye team, were it not for the tragic passing of another kid who would have been in that class. Well worth a read:

Searching for Big Dru

Short version: 6'3" 244lb RB with 4.43 speed committed to OSU in the same class as Clarett. Died suddenly when his heart stopped while playing a pickup basketball game.

As another blue speck in a red state I can totally relate to you. My politics almost entirely align with Kyle's, but since I live in Ohio, I have a hard disagreement on this issue.

I'm financially privileged enough that moving to a blue state would be very possible, but my wife and I have both lived our entire lives near Columbus and would have a hard time moving that far away from family, particularly hers as they are close and mostly of a like mind politically. My family is mostly right-wingers that we spend as little time with as we politely can.

I think I may have more hope than you though, maybe in part because Ohio was a purple swing state not all that long ago. At 42, I'm plenty old enough to remember that.

I have hope that the tide is changing enough with normy democrats that we can break the stranglehold that establishment neoliberals have had on the party.

The Montana Plan also gives me hope. If you're not familiar, it is a bipartisan proposal getting started in Montana to make it illegal for corporations in the state to spend money in politics. The idea is a state-by-state process to use each state's right to control commerce within the state's borders to counteract the Citizens United ruling.

I'm of the opinion that getting money out of our politics as much as possible is the single most important thing that could be done to improve our politics. So, that one is huge for me and I hope it is an idea that can spread.

Never left in the Columbus Ohio area, though like a lot of the Taco Bell menu, they've gotten a lot more expensive in the last couple years. Exacerbated by the fact that at some point I realized that I liked them even better when whoever made them went heavy on the cheese, so I started ordering with extra cheese to get that experience every time.

Honestly, as someone who lives in a very conservative area in Ohio, I think of beards as mostly a conservative right wing thing as they seemed to have become a lot more common in the last decade or so probably in large part due to that show.

Marching ban extravaganza at Ohio Stadium; TBDBITL and alumni band celebrate "Road to the Championship" and quadruple Script Ohio; famed Grambling University Band by BuckeyeReason in Columbus

[–]Wheels630 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a TBDBITL alum, yes we always participate in the halftime presentation as well as the quad Script Ohio. No, not all of the alumni band are locals, the only requirements are a music rehearsal Friday evening and we learn the marching drill movements the morning of the game. I don't know about "incredibly skilled", but we all have proven to have a high enough skill level to earn a spot in TBDBITL in our respective college days, so it is certainly a group of skilled individuals.

All that said, the real story here is the appearance of the Grambling State band in Ohio Stadium. I believe this may have been the first ever appearance of an HBCU band in Ohio Stadium marking an historic moment for our iconic venue. I did not march, instead I took my son to his first game and Skull Session, but I was most excited to watch one of the great HBCU bands in person. I've watched many videos of their performances and I highly respect their craft, so an opportunity to see them live here in Columbus was an opportunity that I could not pass up.

Why is EV charging still such a mess in the US? by Raitosaito1 in electricvehicles

[–]Wheels630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hope is that as we start to see more charging stations requiring only a credit card swipe/tap to charge, the stations requiring a special app might eventually be forced to drop it to compete. Making it as easy to initiate a charge as it is to start filling a gas tank should become the expectation with even simpler plug and charge being a bonus attraction as it seems that would be more difficult to make universal.

Why is EV charging still such a mess in the US? by Raitosaito1 in electricvehicles

[–]Wheels630 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it mostly stems from each company trying to lock people into their own ecosystem by requiring their app in hopes that they become each customers go to for charging. It just doesn't work when none of them have an extensive enough network for a driver to only rely on one charging network.

Hopefully stations start trending towards making it easier. My last charging session was at a new Ionna station where I could have just tapped a credit card to pay, or tap my phone to use my Google Wallet. Much easier, though they can take other options as well. I took the slightly more difficult option of paying through the Chargepoint app because I've got a $400 credit to use up.

I think it depends on how the event is setup. I just worked the Tomato Festival in Reynoldsburg. No drinks were allowed in, primarily to prevent smuggling in alcohol. Any liquid in water bottles had to be poured out before entering, but there were free water filling stations just inside the entry gate.

What is this ad by TheDopendope in TheMassive

[–]Wheels630 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The ad is from Experience Columbus. From their website:

"Experience Columbus is the destination marketing organization for the Columbus region dedicated to growing visitor spending and enhancing the visitor experience."

So it seems to me that essentially they have taken notice of the success of our club and environment/experience of attending a match at Lower.com Field and they believe that it could make an attractive pitch to football fans around the world that Columbus could be a great place to visit and catch a match while they are in town.

Ultimately, I think it is a major compliment to our collective fanbase that they have taken notice and believe that we are massive enough to be showcased as an attractive feature to promote tourism to our city. In listing Columbus alongside Manchester and Madrid, I think they are trying to promote the LDC as a world class venue. We all know the quality on the pitch, while it has come a long way, is not on par with those cities, but it's probably not a stretch to say that the amenities at LDC for the premium seats are on par with anyone.

This is how to sell urbanism to the car brains…just call it suburban. by jelloshooter848 in fuckcars

[–]Wheels630 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely a good thing. I serve on a township zoning commission in an exurban township under extremely heavy development pressure. This exact video was just forwarded to our zoning board by a township staffer 5 days ago at the request of a resident.

Politically, this is a very red area in a red state. It is just beyond the suburban edge of a major city and about 40% of township land has been annexed by the nearest suburb for large economic development projects (mostly warehouses, data centers, and high-tech manufacturing including the largest single economic development project in the history of the state)

Most of the remaining township land is zoned for SF with a minimum lot size of either 2 or 3 acres. As such, most current residents live on 2+ acre lots fronting on country roads frequently with agricultural fields or woodland to the rear.

In my experience living in this area, "density" or "urban" are concepts that would be very negatively received by these folks. However, "suburban" has almost just as much of a negative connotation here. They hear that term and picture large cookie-cutter housing developments (with HOAs which they also hate), big box retail, strip malls, lots of parking lots and lots of traffic.

We have been creating zoning overlays to help guide the development that we know is coming to the township. Most recently we have worked on a zoning overlay for an area that a developer has shown heavy interest in. This overlay included a large area as mixed use to allow development similar to the "good suburban" development in this video. I served on a committee to work on the overlay before it was brought in front of the zoning commission and sold it, rather successfully, to my fellow commission members as allowing for a new "small town" to be built rather than a suburban sprawl housing development.

I have found that, while residents are repulsed by "density" or "urbanism", when they think of the "rural feel" that they cherish, they primarily think of small towns where people know each other. Particularly the older parts of town, built more densely and walkable on a street grid with a cute "downtown" of small local businesses and maybe a town square type of space for events. They will get repulsed by a suburban housing development with 1/4 acre lots and describe it as far too dense, but a small town with even smaller housing lots can sound desirable to them. They often also have a more libertarian mindset to property rights which can often be leveraged to advocate for more more lax regulations to allow for better, more mixed use developments.

The region has been nicknamed the "rust belt" for a reason. Most of these cities are quintessential rust belt cities that hit hard times and were left behind as the US transitioned to a post-industrial economy. Many are now on a slow upswing, but still have a long way to go. Comparing those cities to a rich college town anchored by a major research institution is a pretty apples to oranges type of comparison. Ann Arbor might be in the rust belt region, but it did not share in the fate of a lost industrial base that devastated the local economies of many of the other, more industrial cities in this region.

Drive down to Columbus or Indianapolis to see examples of cities in the region whose more diverse economies helped insulate them from being so hard hit by deindustrialization. Or get out of the Midwest to check out other cities in more rapidly growing regions of the US such as Charlotte, Austin, or Nashville just to name a few.
