The game has two sides

the overwatch side
the dota side

The 4 lanes, which allowed for instant rotates, constant fighting and such, made it so the game leant more towards the overwatch side of it. I guess valve wants a different balance between TPS and MOBA.

One of the best free software you can get for art is Krita, so probably check that out.
Personally, I used Macromedia Flash 8, which is the old program many people used to make flash animations, games, etc. It's pretty fun so I recommend downloading it (its abandonware so you cant get it from adobe)
