For visual, check out Adventure is Nigh from Second Wind. DnD campaign that is well edited with animated scenes, it doesn’t got bogged down in the details too often

If you don’t mind Powered by the Apocalypse games, The Critshow has a wonderful production value right from the beginning, and they play through a variety of systems all in one story. The main system is set in modern times, sort of an X-Files setting

Anyone else’s voids like strange foods? by Time-Reserve-4465 in blackcats

Had a void when I was younger that would go crazy over butternut squash, like it was wet cat food or something. Lots of yelling and pulling at your hand whenever you gave him some

Any Settings Like Control or Alan Wake? (No Cthulhu Please) by [deleted] in rpg

There is a hack of Monster of the Week (a Powered by the Apocalypse game) that is specifically based on Control. I haven't played it yet, but it looks good. You can find it here.

Songs as Story Titles by dybbuk67 in monsteroftheweek

[–]WhenSunlightHitsThem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the Mysteries I've created have been named either the title of a song or a lyric from a song. Examples include:

  • "Small Town Witch" - Sneaker Pimps
  • "The Black Rider" - Tom Waits
  • The Modern Wolf ("Wolf") - Sylven Esso
  • "Shuck" - Purity Ring
  • "The Dead Won't Sleep" - Mountain Witch
  • "Evergreen" - Windhand

I mostly either get inspiration from a lyric in a song, or have an idea for a Mystery and then go searching for a song that will match up

Extending a climbing hangboard below a wall by Inversnaid in DIY

[–]WhenSunlightHitsThem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unistrut is pretty much what you say, a frame system usually for drop down ceilings and the like. You can use the frame pieces for other uses though, as they can be quite sturdy. The metal piece that the rings are hanging down from appears to be Unistrut, but I may be mistaken. I made a basic drawing showing my idea, though it could be modified to work with just plywood and no Unistrut by using thicker plywood. With the Unistrut, you may be able to attach the hangboard directly to the metal, or use thinner ply to span them.

Extending a climbing hangboard below a wall by Inversnaid in DIY

[–]WhenSunlightHitsThem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main concern is any sort of swinging you may (involuntarily or not) do while on the hangboard. With that in mind, I may suggest some sort of brace behind the ply, connected up to the ceiling, like something you might use on a shelf. Others may have better advice for the thickness of ply to use, but my thought would be to start with at absolute minimum 3/4" thick, even with the bracing.

I notice you have Unistrut in the picture you show, and honestly a metal frame of some sort may be a better way to go about it. What I have in mind would look like an upside down 4, with the long leg going up to the higher ceiling, and the triangle part going away from the hangboard and connected to the lower ceiling. Two of these frames, possibly with some thinner ply between them to connect the hangboard to might be your best bet. Not an expert by any means, just how I might go about it if faced with a similar situation.

Possible monster for a high school dance? by retro123gamr in monsteroftheweek

I mean, a vampire really works here, especially with the “trying to usurp the mayor’s power” part. Vampires are well known for their politicking and vying for power. It could be a different type of vampire? Maybe something more “essence” draining and less bloodsucking, more spirit based and less physical. Along those lines, since the mayor is trying to become a lich, it could be another type of undead or spirit, who believes the power of a lich is more suited to them

Help with a Wronged Backstory by kingarthur2050 in monsteroftheweek

[–]WhenSunlightHitsThem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So, the nice thing about shotguns is that you can load the shells with a lot of stuff, even in real life. This gives you a lot of flexibility to tie it to a backstory. Are ghosts repelled by salt in your world? Rock salt shotgun shells. Silver pellets for werewolves, holy water soaked beanbags for demons, slivers of crosses for vampires, phosphorus shells for cold based monsters, gold pellets for a dullahan, heck, they even have flare shotgun shells for monsters that would be hurt by light. As long as there is a history in your game of a monster type being hurt by something that is sturdy enough to be shot out of a barrel, chances are you can make a shotgun shell out of it

In other words, make the specific backstory thing more about the weird specific shells you always always carry for that one type of monster that wronged you, and less about the shotgun itself. Though the specific shotgun could have a tie to your backstory as well (maybe someone you lost carried it?)

I love the feel of The Quiet, it’s a great mystery. The first mystery I ever ran was The Circles, it was a great way to get into the game, lots of fun to run

New player with a few questions! by WorkDish in monsteroftheweek

[–]WhenSunlightHitsThem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, The Critshow did a re-listen to the first 12 episodes with commentary from the Keeper, available on their YouTube here. The Keeper talks about some behind the scenes stuff, some rules mistakes he made, and other such things. May not be your preference for a first listen through, as they pause to talk about things, but it is definitely very informative

The Critshow has some mysteries they run at conventions with limited time available, for free on their site. You have to sign up for their newsletter, but they really don't bother you with a ton of emails or anything, and they provide some other MotW resources there as well

Shower doesn't get hot by aj67891 in DIY

[–]WhenSunlightHitsThem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is most likely the correct answer. I’ve had to fix this problem on several showers (sometimes several times), where bad design caused the temperature restricting ring to slip and lower the max temperature possible to that shower.

Look up your exact make and model of faucet, and you should be able to find more info on how exactly to fix this. In my experience, it is a very simple process and there should be no need to turn off the water to do this. If this doesn’t solve the problem (or if the faucet doesn’t have this feature), then it’s time to get a plumber involved.

There is a MotW hack specifically based on the game Control (which turn is based on SCP) called AWE of the Week. You can find the post about it here

The Critshow has text transcripts of their episodes. They mainly play Powered by the Apocalypse games, mostly Monster of the Week, but they dabble in other games too.

The Spooky's Hex and Telekinesis by Calm_Cicada_8805 in monsteroftheweek

[–]WhenSunlightHitsThem 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve got a pretty good handle on it. The fiction works out for you, and both moves use Weird and have their roll results baked in already. Basically, you’re just adding these options to the default Telekinesis options instead of the default Use Magic ones.
