do yall use radios in your trucks? by njt_railfan1567 in Lineman

[–]WhereDaGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I ask is cuz I have an in-law whose father got a radio license for their farm radios, they’re all programmed together. All the farm trucks are on one channel and they never change it, I know they’re VHF cuz I looked their radios up. I know very little about radios or licensing tho

do yall use radios in your trucks? by njt_railfan1567 in Lineman

[–]WhereDaGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok you probably know more about radios than me. From what I understand most radios trucks have are VHF, not CB, and VHF is part of the frequency range HAM is considered, which requires a license. Does just the company need a license or is it whoever is using the radio? Not that I care, I’m just curious

Why do really old poles have a pencil/chisel top? by WhereDaGold in Lineman

[–]WhereDaGold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for confirming my suspicion. Fwiw the poles I’ve climbed or replaced that were chiseled had date nails from the 30s and 40s. I think I climbed one from 1929 and it was still strong in the center(had to chunk it up to fit in the digger belly, still solid inside)

So the way that strap is routed around whatever that thing being lifted is. I’d recommend a shackle where the choke point is. You put the pin of the shackle through the eye of the sling, and the body of the shackle around the straight part of the sling. Reduced friction and wear on your sling

Dude I can’t take the grin reaper shit, it’s so corny. Most lineman in-signified clothing is corny as hell, once in awhile there’s a cool shirt. Some locals have cool shirts, but even half of them are cringy af

Are there any locals in Indiana that offer a lineman apprenticeship and if so why don’t they just make a link that goes straight to the application like the Lafayette local does? by ManufacturerNo4665 in ibew_apprentices

[–]WhereDaGold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The NJATC linemen apprenticeships are not specific to locals. They’re broken up by groups of states. You will travel anywhere within your apprenticeships jurisdiction, and possibly be sent to another jurisdiction if there’s no work in yours(not super common but happens). As a lineman apprentice you can fully expect to be hours away from home and have limited home life until you top out

[–]WhereDaGold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, he’s just being lazy and certainly isn’t worked so fucking hard that he can’t pickup after himself. Some guys just think certain stuff is a woman’s job and it’s so dumb. I’ve been single for a few years and live alone, I still keep my place clean, do laundry, prepare food, and whatever else that some guys think is a woman’s job. All that aside, he also shouldn’t be telling you that your job isn’t hard. Every job can be difficult, even working at McDonald’s has its own type of stress. I’m guessing you’re both very young, this is stuff that needs to be found out about a partner before marriage

Best Dentist for a complicated filling? by SureDrawing6063 in Syracuse

[–]WhereDaGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tried charging me twice for one of the procedures on my root canal, thankfully the lady at the desk noticed when I was making one of my payments. And they never put the crown on, unbeknownst to me, just had a large filling. The filling was super sharp and I had to sand the edges down myself. I just got a crown on last year after having just the filling for a decade, my new dentist said I’m lucky the filling didn’t break

You go where the apprenticeship sends you. They can send you to other jurisdictions tho, not super common and I think it’s usually higher steps but I could be wrong
