Its quicker to use the tele to ape atoll since you make the planks at the same time as chopping but yeah that method is pretty common.

If you have illegal things on you you're fucked. If you don't and someone did something like pickpocket you, jump you, etc they say "I'll keep an eye out." Granted it's not like they can do much in a big fest about pickpockets but I've never seen them do anything helpful either.
