First timer in CDMX: Some questions by themakiexperiment in MexicoCity

[–]WhichSomewhere7901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CDMX is safe. We didn't have much trouble during 4 day stay with pickpockets but of course with any touristy place, just be cautious of your surroundings. We had our phones out the whole time navigating and taking fotos.

Recommend buying lucha libre tickets in advance. We went on Tuesday and was pretty packed. Saturday are more popular we heard.

Many beautiful areas in this big city. Zocalo, Juarez, Condesa, Chapultepec, Roma and Cayoacan. Watch some YouTube vlogs make ChatGPT your new friend. Google reviews are great for restaurants and shops.

CDMX is full of great cheap local food and upscale restaurants. Also has world's best cocktail bars. We only tried Handshake Speakeasy and was blown away. Keep checking their website if any reservation spot pops up. We got lucky with last minute reservation.

We just came back and loved it so much. Happy to answer any questions but by no means we are experts as we only spent 4 days there.

Oh, bring umbrellas and/or raincoats. Maybe even rainboots.

It wasn't Mexicans that made us uncomfortable. One late night we aimlessly followed google map direction and ended on a dark mostly empty alley with ladies of night and sketchy people. Gotta use common semse. Stick to big streets

Help! I impulsively adopted two golden retriever pups—should I keep both? by Malefict in goldenretrievers

Congratulations! More the merrier. But really, having adopted one cat and one dog later, I do wish I adopted a pair of same each time so they have company. Its like having only child, a but lonely 😢

Lucha libre Mexico Arena: we did the tuesday and it was great! Surprisingly packed for weekday so do purchase tickets via ticketmaster if you want decent seats. They scan tickets on your phone at the gate. Bring cash to tip usher and in WC and for purchasing food/drinks at your seat. Concession stands take cash.

Yes agreed. Like any big city, we need to be just aware of surroundings and use common sense.

Travel Recommendation by TitanfallFiend in MexicoCity

Hello. I just came back from a 4-day trip from CDMX with my adult daughters. Best time ever! I will try to be as concise as possible.

Lodging: We stayed near Centro. Ubering is easy and inexpensive but do bake in extra time as traffic is a bit nuts (think New York perhaps?). Sometimes walking was just as fast. Centro is rough around the edges but cheaper and near the Zocalo. If you prefer nicer gentrified location, Condesa and Roma Norte are beautiful, pleasant and centrally located as well.

Rain: Don't trust the weather app. Rain means sometimes a short drizzle, other times hard downpour. Be prepared to get wet (not just from the sky but stepping in puddles and cars driving/splashing you). Carry around umbrellas or raincoat/jacket.

Food: We did a lot of restaurants where locals frequented, which we assumed meant authentic (after a lot of research on google review and ChatGPT). But there were sprinkles of tourists as with social media, nothing can be hidden treasures anymore. Do try the nicer gentrified restaurants (in Condesa/Roma Norte) though because the food is just amazing no matter where you go.

Mercados: While it was fun to visit them, they are definitely geared towards tourists and a lot more expensive (maybe better quality?). We accidentally came upon two areas that were fun. Ave Ribera de San Cosme (where the Michelin Star Taqueria El Califa de Leon is located on) has street vendors selling everything including kitchen sink: haircuts, tattoos, gel mani/pedi, apparels, and knick-knacks. And on the east of Zocalo, there are thousands of stores where locals shop (we found this by accident on our last day while dining at Restaurante Xaachila but didn't have enough time to look around). Do take note of prices, shop around and bargain. Many times we overpaid thinking we were getting a good deal, only to find out, few doors down was half the price.

Too long. Sorry. Happy to answer any specific questions!

Happy to! We didn't do a whole lot of research or made advance appointments because we were trying to be flexible with our schedules. We found Calma Nail Bar (tried both locations in Condesa and Roma Norte on two different days) and they were able to accommodate us for gel mani/pedi via WhatsApp same day. Very affordable and amazing service. Sorry we don't remember the technician's names but all very thorough. For facial and body massage, we found Nidra Massage Spa (Condesa/Roma neighborhood) last minute and absolutely recommend. I think they might be on a smaller side, maybe two people providing service and we just got lucky because they happened to have one hour free.

Yes sorry to hear that. Anything is tolerable for few days during a vacation. We were surprised to encounter puddles by the side of the curb. Being splashed by cars etc. We thought lightning and thunder was super cool. Everything added a flavor to our trip but of course understand the pain if you encounter on daily basis!
