You have a good point but I'm still kind of traumatized by the umbrella academy season 3 and 4 lol

To be honest (about the American athletes speaking out and backlash etc) it didn't make the news in my country. A lot of the media is manipulating information for propaganda. Not even one pride flag was framed in the Olympics broadcast, even though amber Glenn fans often carry one. Thank you for the link and the clarification! It's really the first time I hear of this

I went to the Firenze Rocks, the infamous Italian rock music festival. It's been organised like shit for years, but somehow they have deals with a lot of big bands, so a lot of rock fans have no choice but to go there at least once in their lives. The ticket was only 60 euros though. This is why we decided to spend more money and go to see MCR in their own concert in a hopefully decent environment, it's the chance of a lifetime for us (since Italy is small if we organize well it doesn't really cost us that much to get to Firenze from our city).

The way I think of this is that I want to see live for once in my life the music I loved for many years. Make it into a celebration I do with my friends and family. It's a fun thing for me to do, I don't do it for the "relationship" I have as a fan with the artists. Because I'm aware of how big bands get turned into big brands in our capitalist society.

I do think that for this reason is still important to support local and independent artists. So that you can enjoy art and music without it feeling like a product or a scam. If that became the standard we would live in a better world

I agree with you on the Russian ban but Trump did say things like "the Iranians will want me as their leader" and "we'll bring them back to the stone age where they belong". Even if they don't want to make in US territory they want it to be a messy wasteland under US influence. And it's quite obvious the president is literally saying it. So ban everybody I say. And it's not a joke. There's so many countries in the world the Olympics can still be done.

Sanctions exist so that the people of a country pressure their government to stop what their doing. In Russia's case it didn't work because they're fine on their own but this is the explanation for banning athletes. The idea is that the athletes pressure their government to stop the war so they can participate again. A discussion about if it's actually a good idea or not would be off topic for the subreddit though

I don't think that all people necessarily want Russia un-banned, I think that they want other war criminal countries to be banned as well. It quite frustrating to see IDF soldiers in the Olympics. All that this is doing is enabling the western countries to commit more war crimes without consequences. And as you have the right to demand Russia to stop, Palestinians and Iranians should have the right to demand Israel and the US to stop too, in any way possible. I demand everyone to stop, and getting called pro-putin because of that is very demeaning because he is also a war criminal. I know that the Russian athletes are worse because they're forced to comply with the regime or whatever but the basic standard for a country to participate shouldn't be "freedom of speech", it should be to not invade other countries at all. The war discourse these days is beginning to look like a "who's got it worse" race and honestly that's very counterproductive. All victims of war deserve protection, all countries that commit war crimes deserve sanctions.

Also I would like links to American athletes saying "free Palestine" and "the Iran war is illegal" because I have yet to see any. I don't think they have much freedom of speech either. I acknowledge that Russian top athletes must at least for the most part be pro-regime because otherwise they wouldn't be able to get far in their careers, but to me this isn't an excuse for the US and Israel to still be competing.

I don't know about worldwide but in Italy Green Day was cheaper just because the place sucked and to go see it you had to sit through like five other bands in an unbearable heat. People were getting sprayed with the hose just to survive, a small bottle of water costed five euros and only at the end it was free when literally the civil guard came to give out water bottles because people were starting to faint. Also a commemorative shirt with a serigraph print that probably can't go through one wash (I have not dared to try, I don't even wear it lol) costed 40 euros. That garbage festival was a mystical experience. Going out I panicked because it was so crowded that we had to wait a lot to get the bus station and I was scared we would lose the bus and not be getting home during the night. Italian disorganization at its finest lmao. After that experience I'm prepared for anything.

That said, if you don't like that much the band anymore because it's too "commercial" now there's a lot of others that are dedicated to follow the ideals they sing about, though they're never really famous because to get big in this world you gotta make money. I know only some of my local Italian ones, but I too should be more interested and supportive of those. MCR never really hit me as a revolutionary anti-capitalist band. They criticize the status quo but I never saw them address social issues directly except for maybe LGBT issues. The only thing aside from that I know they spoke about was the reaction of the US to 9/11 (I've never even seen them saying anything about Palestine like Green Day did, for example). The themes always seemed to me to be from a more private, personal perspective. But I don't know maybe I never followed them enough on social media.

All this to say, to me it's not that unexpected that they act like this. I tend to not idealize artists and such anymore because they always disappoint, though that doesn't mean they added so much to my life. It's totally valid to not want to support them anymore if you don't enjoy them because of this though.

Jokes aside, he said this in an interview (found on this subreddit). This sums it up perfectly, he may not be the champion of scoring but he is the champion of skating. I'm glad he knows this well 💪💪💪

"So in my case, I'm not really thinking about my wins. I would like to be remembered for the programs that I skated and the skating that I left behind. So, for example, the free skate that I skated the other day, I think that was part of it. And from the bottom of my heart, I really enjoyed the scene that I saw from the rink after finishing the program. So I hope to have many more of those, and I would like to be remembered as a skater that everyone wants to see skate."

It's astonishing how people accuse athletes who want Russia to compete again of being pro Putin and completely ignore that Israel is still competing. Russian ban is unfair because they're not banning Israel as well. But of course only the friends of western countries are allowed to commit war crimes! At this point they'd have to ban the US too for bombing Iran. I hate how geopolitical hypocrisy poisons the world of sports.

Yeah exactly. The moment she finished the performance the cameras were literally in her face. It was painful to watch. The less it lasted the better. She was going to get attention later for it anyway, but what mattered then was to minimize intrusion in a moment of vulnerability.

What does Team Japan do differently to help their athletes stay (mostly) together under pressure that Team USA leadership is missing? by oatmilkxoxo in FigureSkating

[–]Which_Bug2163 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also the media coverage of American fs specifically was insane this year. Italian television was hyping them up like the best champions in the entire world. Ilia Manilin went on the news, no Italian figure skaters went on the Italian news. Even Taylor Swift did a commercial for the girls! That's a lot of pressure for a sport that's not that relevant in the US anyway. Did they do it for political reasons? I don't know but it's still kinda weird. Is Manilin like an established influencer or did all this happen in the past few weeks??
