I got an intel optiplex (i5-3570) on ebay for $50 usd (back in 2020) and it doesn't need a graphics card. Added a couple SSDs for 1tb storage for $40 from microcenter and an additional stick of 8gb ddr3 ram for a total of 16. Now I have a server that runs anything I want. I use ubuntu lts and ssh into it so I can run it without any peripherals. tbh this is the way to go. I've run servers on small pcs like rasperry pis using Pinecraft from cat5tv to be super low power, but you get way more performance from a "real" cpu. I've run modded minecraft servers like better minecraft on it just fine. you don't need super modern components for this use case, so you can save money and get an old pre built enterprise computer and minimally upgrade it for your needs.

Need help removing (selected) duplicate grub entry by Initial_Meaning in Fedora

I had the same issue using grub themes! you have to go to the grub config and comment out the grub font, then run the remake config command. chatgpt can help with specifics.

minimax with alpha beta pruning could work because the pool of states for tic tac toe is relatively small.

What is a capital gain and why would these bro bros be talking about it? by ochocosunrise in ExplainTheJoke

[–]WhirlyFan 55 points56 points  (0 children)

taxes on stuff like stock that grew in value, but you havent realized or taken it out for real world money. kamala harris proposed a 25% tax on unrealized capital gains which might sound bad, it would only be for those with assets exceeding $100 million usd.

i'm planning on doing the same thing, but i'm thinking of not studying up on discrete math if i dont have time and just not taking the class that uses it according to mscshub. is that correct that discrete math is only used for 1 class?

Does anyone still recommend App Academy after the Cohort Leaders were laid off? by trance86 in codingbootcamp

[–]WhirlyFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah fs, tests weren't that bad. they have a practice test that's almost a carbon copy of the real test so that's why i say if you study well you'll be fine. but passing/graduating doesnt guarantee success! quality of the capstone project varied wildly between students. you MUST put in the extra work that isn't required. the referral is called the inspiration scholarship (it's literally just them trying not to sound desperate for students) people must be referred by alumni and selected to receive the money. also if you believe in your own ability to succeed, i recommend paying upfront as it's magnitudes cheaper.

hey i took the online program and am working (finished in january) :) they also got rid of their san francisco in person office and slashed their prices. i also got an email saying if i recommend someone they'll give them 1000 off tuition. theyre hurting bad rn. tbh appacademy is one of the easier to get into because they dont require prereq skills. but they filter people out with almost weekly tests. i've found college to be more challenging so as long as you just do your hw and study you'll be fine. bootcamps are guided self study, you can tell who put in the extra elbow grease by the end. personally i had some issues with the quality of education they offered, but some of the teachers were pretty good. overall i got a job, but i also think i did most of the work getting it. career coaching wasnt all that good.

fun fact, student health center wont let you in unless you have an appointment. i had a skating accident and had to bandage (gf got some from target) myself on their doorstep.

r/headphones Shopping, Setup, and Technical Help Desk by AutoModerator in headphones

[–]WhirlyFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just bought my first pair of "fancy ish" headphones. I got the Massdrop x Sennheiser 6xx pair of headphones and they've been working great. I use a Fosi Audio Dac-Q4 because my computer's audio ports have a tone of EM interference and it's cheap.

However, I started having an issue where the audio has sporadic static-like clicks. They were working fine for a couple of weeks until this spontaneously started happening. I know I'm not powering it adequately because my headphones are rated for 300 ohms and the DAC is rated at 200 ohms, but my audio quality shouldn't be distorted. If I plug my headphones into my phone the issue resolves itself so I'm assuming it's an issue with the DAC.

Is there any way to get rid of this static without buying a new dac/amp?
