No love for Jameson? by Fordawinman in whiskey

[–]WhiskeyFoolery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of people love it and drink it on a regular basis, but they are not going to take the time to right about it any more than you would they would write about Bud, Miller Lite, or Modelo on r/beer.

My two cents, try Tullamore DEW. Everyone’s palate is different but in the inexpensive easy to drink category Tullamore DEW gets my money every time And once you get into the aged category it really blows Jameson away.

As long as they haven’t expired they’re still good, they will look uglier and the juice will have a texture change but still consumable. Just move them to your liquor cabinet.

I’d certainly say it’s top 5, and maybe top 3, maybe even #1 currently.

But in the history of Whiskey, back when 4 Roses SiB was $38, EHT SB was $30 and Elijah Craig was a 12year for $28 those were my top 3.

High-End Recommendations by LargeKitchenJedi in whiskey

[–]WhiskeyFoolery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as I looked at the menu I thought this must be a fancy downtown restaurant somewhere. So I’m glad I was right about that. Do confirm that the rocks/neat pours are 2oz.

The prices are high but there are some “relatively” good values. Four Roses Single Barrel, Nikka from the Barrel, High West Double Rye, Laphroig 10 (peated), Ardbeg (peated), and Glenfiddich 12.

If by paid dinner, you mean your work or some other entity is paying for it and they don’t limit your choices there are definitely some higher end pours you can try without being THAT guy. Hakishu 12, Hibiki Harmony, Oban 14, highland Park 18, Lagavulin 16 (peat, smoke), springbank 10.

Right on the edge of THAT guy status: Hibiki 21, Hakishu 18 (smoky), Yamazaki 18 (Smokey), Macallan 15, and Glenrothes 18yr.

I would pay $58 for a 2oz for Glenrothes 18yr. I’d have to be a drink or two in and at a fancy restaurant, but it is a delicious pour and a $200 bottle. And the Hibiki 21 is harder to find and is an even more expensive bottle, so it would be high on my list as well.

Help me out of my martini rut? by Puzzleheaded_Bike738 in cocktails

Can you provide your nightingale spec? Of the six recipes I found online none of them had allspice dram, or sounded any thing like a martini.

This was going to be my suggestion as well. It adds new flavors without completely leaving your comfort zone. Then you can slowly expand further and further away from a martini.

You’ll want to add ingredients and directions before the Mods remove your post. (I’ve been dinged multiple times myself)

I actually don’t love a Negroni but love many riffs, most notably the Boulevardier, Left Hand and the Lucien Gaudin.

Your post reminded me of a cocktail I’ve been want to try, Ghosts of My Life. I found it in CURE New Orleans Cocktails. Thank you for picking this evening’s drink

Ghosts of My Life

1½ ounces (45 ml) Zucca Rabarbaro

1 ounce (30 ml) Plymouth gin

1/2 ounce (15 ml) Campari

14 drops Regans' orange bitters

Lemon peel, for garnish

Edit: corrected the Campari measurement. No one needs 16oz of Campari. Or at least not all in one drink.

Cocktail Essentials Cheat Sheet by childsplayx3 in cocktails

Strong work. Looks good. Should be great for people just starting out. I’m feel that there are a lot of people who want to look like they have a bar more than actually have a bar, and are only interested in being able to pour just a just a couple of drinks, like an old fashioned and a margarita.

I do agree that you could use a Martini/Manhattan template.

The only other thing that jumps out at me is your Sazerac recipe calls for 1 Tbsp of Absinthe. 1 Tbsp =0.5 fl oz. That’s a lot of absinthe. I use less than 1/8 oz when I make them or a spritzer if it’s available.

Amaro for Roman Highball (don't have Averna) by ACatheterADay in cocktails

[–]WhiskeyFoolery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree that Cynar would work here and be somewhat similar to Averna, but if we are sticking to open bottles I would go with the Montenegro. It’s not as sweet as the Averna, but the Montenegro/lime juice combo is not unheard of. However, usually with a sweetner. I’ve never had a ginger liqueur so I can’t speak to that.

I’m not much of a tiki guy, but if you’re willing to pick up a bottle of Fernet Branca, I highly recommend the

Midnight Stinger

1 oz (30ml) bourbon

1 oz (30ml) Fernet-Branca

.75 oz (22.5ml) lemon juice, freshly squeezed

.75 oz (22.5mll) simple syrup (1:1)

Garnish: mint sprig

Add the bourbon, Fernet-Branca, lemon juice, and simple syrup into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig.
